SUMMARY:FINAL WEEK: Repeat/Recreate: Clyfford Still’s “Replicas”
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit of Clyfford Still’s “replicas” (wait\, abstract expressionists paint copies?! Fascinating and true) is one of our favorite exhibits yet to grace the beautiful rally spaces at the Clyfford Still Museum since it opened in 2011. You really should see it before it closes on January 10\, 2016. \nHere’s the exhibit description from the Museum: \nAn exhibition of closely related compositions that Still called “replicas\,” Repeat/Recreate features major works by Clyfford Still exhibited in pairings. Uncanny and often darkly magnetic\, they provide a new and greater understanding of Still’s process and methods\, while challenging the popular understanding of Abstract Expressionism as an outpouring of impulsive creativity. \nThe exhibition brings together works of art from some of the world’s most renowned collections\, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art\, Museum of Modern Art\, Detroit Institute of Arts\, Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden\, and Smithsonian American Art Museum. At least nineteen works featured in Repeat/Recreate have never been shown publicly\, and only one of the exhibition’s pairings has previously been exhibited in tandem. \nMore info: https://clyffordstillmuseum.org/exhibitions/

SUMMARY:The Whiffenpoofs with The Baker's Dozen
DESCRIPTION:This will be the sixth consecutive year the Whiffenpoofs\, the world’s oldest and best-known collegiate a cappella group\, have performed at the Newman Center\, and joining them this year will be fellow Yale a cappella group The Baker’s Dozen. \nTickets: $15 – $25 \nMore info and tickets: http://www.newmancenterpresents.com/whiff-bd/ \nABOUT THE WHIFFENPOOFS: Founded in 1909\, the “Whiffs” began as a senior quartet that met for weekly concerts at Mory’s Temple Bar\, the famous Yale tavern. Today\, the group has become one of Yale’s most celebrated and hallowed traditions. The Whiffenpoofs’ repertoire features a diverse selection of songs\, ranging from traditional Yale songs to original compositions to hits from every decade. \nMade famous by their signature “Whiffenpoof Song” (which has since been covered by artists such as Elvis Presley\, Bing Crosby\, and Rudy Vallee)\, the Whiffs carry forward their century-old tradition each year with over 200 performances in such venues as Carnegie Hall\, Broadway’s Lincoln Center\, and the Rose Bowl. \nABOUT THE BAKER’S DOZEN: In the summer of 1947\, thirteen men with an unrivaled passion for music and revelry banded together to form the dynamic brotherhood known as the Baker’s Dozen. Known across America as one of the nation’s oldest and finest collegiate a cappella singing groups\, The Baker’s Dozen continues its tradition of memorable performances with a wide variety of audiences. From the Yale campus to the Hollywood Hills\, the Baker’s Dozen performs for audiences of all sizes. Every year\, they combine music and comedy on stages in schools\, clubs\, restaurants\, and private parties across the nation and around the globe. \nIn recent years\, the Baker’s Dozen has entertained everyone from orphaned schoolchildren in Puerto Rico to the President of the United States\, leaving an impression of boundless energy no matter where their winter and spring break tours happen to take them. Baker’s Dozen concerts feature an engaging mix of traditional favorites and contemporary hits\, from the time-honored “Loch Lomond” to the Temptations\, Neil Diamond\, Ben Folds\, and others.
