SUMMARY:FINAL WEEK: Still & Art
DESCRIPTION:At the time of his mammoth 1979 retrospective at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York\, Clyfford Still provocatively declared\, “My work is not influenced by anybody.” While many observers have regarded this view as merely typical of the artist’s notoriously unyielding singularity\, in hindsight Still’s words ring true at a deeper level. The concept of “influence” suggests external forces acting upon a passive mind. Still’s vision\, however\, was intensely active. His deep knowledge of world art history enabled him to “take and break” a wealth of images and ideas ranging from the distant to the recent past. Still & Art illustrates how he channeled these points of reference into his own intensely personal style. \nOccupying all nine galleries of the Museum\, the exhibition encompasses more than 80 Still paintings\, works on paper\, photographs\, and sculptures. It breaks new ground for the Museum by also including a wealth of images of other artists’ work—both in traditional printed reproductions\, and by way of a handheld device that presents the Museum’s first augmented-reality experience—in striking juxtaposition with Still’s. Still & Art begins with Still’s acknowledgment of Old Masters he admired (among them Leonardo da Vinci\, Rembrandt\, J.M.W. Turner\, and Vincent van Gogh); progresses to his interrogation of near-contemporaries such as Max Ernst and Pablo Picasso; and concludes with epic canvases\, pastels\, and photographs that reveal the artist meditating on his own past production as well as the spirit of color-field painting\, minimalism\, and comparable avant-garde movements of the 1960s and ’70s. \nIn sum\, Still & Art chronicles the visual acumen at the heart of Still’s long creative trajectory. Still’s attitude toward others’ work evokes the literary critic Harold Bloom’s notion of “the anxiety of influence”: that strong creators necessarily engage in a fruitful dialogue of exploration and resistance towards their equally strong predecessors. Such an approach to what may at first appear to be straightforward influences thus leads to high originality. Still & Art tells the story of this unfolding visual drama. \nMore info: https://clyffordstillmuseum.org/exhibition/still-art/ \n[$6 – $10; Fridays 5p – 8p are always FREE!]

SUMMARY:Grand Champion Steer at the Brown Palace
DESCRIPTION:For the 73rd consecutive year\, the National Western Stock Show’s Champion Steer will stroll into Denver’s most elegant and iconic room – the nine-story atrium lobby of The Brown Palace Hotel and Spa – to be adorned with roses and preside over Afternoon Tea. \nThis uniquely Denver tradition is a celebration of the Mile High City’s western heritage and an opportunity to support There With Care\, a non-profit that supports Colorado families and children facing a medical crisis. \nThe 2018 Grand Champion Steer will make his regal entrance by 11 a.m. on Friday\, January 19\, 2018. The public is invited to observe this beloved tradition and can pose for a souvenir photo from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Photos are a suggested $10 donation to There With Care\, and anyone who purchases a photo will be entered into a raffle to win prizes from The Brown Palace\, including an overnight stay in The Brown’s newly renovated guest rooms\, a sumptuous brunch at Ellyngton’s\, Afternoon Tea and more. \nThere With Care will be on-site and accepting gift cards and on-site donations of any amount. Each week\, There With Care provides fundamental support services to approximately 125 – 130 Denver area families whose child is facing a critical illness and all funds will help them to meet the growing demand. \nRodeo royalty will also be on hand for photos and autographs. Following the photo session\, the champion steer will head to the Auction of Junior Champions to be sold that evening.  Past champions have sold for more than $100\,000. \nThis will be the 73rd year for the showing of the grand champion in The Brown Palace lobby. However\, it’s not the first time stock animals have been in the lobby. In 1945\, future Colorado Governor Dan Thornton arranged to have two Hereford bulls shown in the lobby\, and then sold for the unheard of $50\,000. \n[Free admission] \nMore info: https://www.brownpalace.com/national-westerns-grand-champion-steer
