SUMMARY:Free Halloween Movie @DPL: Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1941)
DESCRIPTION:FREE classic Hollywood horror films from the 1930s and 40s presented each Tuesday in October at Denver Public Library Central branch B2 Level Conference Center with the fun-loving folks of Fresh City Life! \nStarring Spencer Tracy\, Ingrid Bergman\, Lana Turner. Directed by Victor Fleming.\n“Spencer Tracy and Ingrid Bergman headline this screen version of Robert Louis Stevenson’s tale\, directed by Gone with the Wind and Wizard of Oz legend Victor Fleming. Tracy stars as Dr. Jekyll\, a scientist who downs an experimental elixir that transforms him into a monstrous alter-ego\, Mr. Hyde. Lana Turner co-stars as Jekyll’s fiancée\, and Bergman as Eva\, the woman who captures his heart. A film steeped in heavy Freudian symbolism\, this production also tries something unusual by relying largely on Tracy’s shift in facial mannerisms (in lieu of heavy make-up) to convey the personality change. As a result\, the movie manages to place a much stronger emphasis on emotions than on the terror of physical mutation.” ~ rottontomatoes.com. 113 minutes. Unrated. \nMore Info: http://denverlibrary.org/fresh

SUMMARY:Free Day at Clyfford Still Museum
DESCRIPTION:Happy Halloween\, Denver! Take advantage of free admission and extended Friday hours to take a peek inside this incredible museum. Not only is the Still home to virtually every piece of artwork created during Clyfford Still’s lifetime (don’t worry\, it’s not all displayed at once!)\, it also takes visitors on a journey through his personal life with interactive displays and collections of mementos. If that’s not enough to get you through the door\, then perhaps the sheer beauty of the building and its stunning concrete architecture will. This is a fascinating and inspiring place! \nWho was Clyfford Still? \nFrom the Museum: Clyfford Still was among the first generation of Abstract Expressionists who developed a new\, powerful approach to painting in the years immediately following World War II. Still’s contemporaries included Philip Guston\, Franz Kline\, Willem de Kooning\, Robert Motherwell\, Barnett Newman\, Jackson Pollock\, and Mark Rothko. Though the styles and approaches of these artists varied considerably\, Abstract Expressionism is marked by abstract forms\, expressive brushwork\, and monumental scale\, all of which were used to convey universal themes about creation\, life\, struggle\, and death (“the human condition”)\, themes that took on a considerable relevance during and after World War II. \nLearn more about the Still Museum: http://clyffordstillmuseum.org

SUMMARY:Free Day at Molly Brown House
DESCRIPTION:Discover what life was like in early Denver and dive into the fascinating life of “Molly” (her real name was Margaret!) Brown. All for $0 thanks to the SCFD and citizen supporters. If you haven’t visited this Denver landmark\, you really should! \nGood to Know: Visits to the Molly Brown House are by guided tour only. Tours start every 30 minutes and the last tour departs at 3:30. \nCurrent Exhibit on Display: “A Right to Vote” \nOctober 9th\, 2014 – January 25\, 2015\n1914 was also a busy year politically for Margaret Brown. Mrs. Brown was in the midst of a bid to become US Senator for Colorado when the events of Ludlow unfolded and when war was declared in Europe. A Right to Vote explores Margaret Brown’s active engagement with the U.S. suffragist movement centered in Newport\, Rhode Island. The “Conference of Great Women” at the home of Alva Vanderbilt Belmont on July 25\, 1914 was an important stepping stone towards the 19th Amendment\, passed in 1920\, prohibiting any United States citizen from being denied the right to vote on the basis of sex. This exhibit is in collaboration with the Colorado Committee for Women’s History and the Friends of the Auraria Library. (Description from Molly Brown House Museum website) \nLearn more at the Molly Brown House Museum Website: http://www.mollybrown.org

SUMMARY:Saturday Sessions: Sweet Song: Hammered Dulcimer with Peter Hebert
DESCRIPTION:Free weekend concerts at Denver Public library Central branch Level 1 Schlessman Hall! The library is way more than books. \nAbout this weekend’s music group from DPL: An expert instrumentalist\, Peter Hebert plays the evocative hammered dulcimer and its cousin\, the psaltery\, with masterful ease – filling the air with the ancient sounds of Medieval Europe. The Graeco-Roman dulcimer (sweet song) derives its name from the Latin dulcis (sweet) and the Greek melos (song). Find out how perfectly named this haunting instrument can be when Peter Hebert makes his dulcimer sing a sweet song. This concert will feature improvisations on songs and melodies of the Holiday Season. \nMore Info: http://denverlibrary.org/fresh
