Becoming a dog musher was Harry Okpik’s childhood dream\, but during the Dog Slaughter in the 1960s\, when government agents shot thousands of Inuit huskies across the Canadian Arctic\, 11-year-old Harry thought his dream was forever destroyed. Twelve years later\, after traumatic residential schooling\, another personal tragedy struck when he suffered a shooting accident and the eventual loss of his leg. In this powerful documentary\, filmed over the course of several seasons\, Harry recounts the momentous events of his life\, including the realization of his life-long dream of running a dog sled team in the 600-km Ivakkak race\, and the challenge of passing on his knowledge to a younger generation. The Special VIP Opening Night will also feature traditional Japanese performances and demonstrations\, Japanese food and refreshments. The film is being screened with the support of the Consulate General of Japan at Denver. \nClick to the full schedule to see trailers for every film! \nOn Saturday\, May 21\, the festival continues with a Japanese animated feature screened by the Colorado Anime Fest. SUMMARY:Rediscovering the Hall Brothers: Race and Photography in Denver
DESCRIPTION:In 2014\, Megan Friedel\, curator of photography at History Colorado\, discovered a collection of photographs at the museum that were allegedly taken by an African American photographer in Denver in the early 1900s. As she researched the collection\, Friedel discovered that that true story of the photos was far more complicated. Photographers Herman\, Harold and Edmeaux Hall were mixed-race brothers of African and French descent\, and their images revealed a complex story of racial migration to Denver and why a family would choose to “pass” as white in the city between 1910 and 1930. \nIn February 2015\, Friedel presented her research on the Hall family photographs at History Colorado. Shortly after\, and thirty years after the collection was donated to the museum\, more than 100 additional photos taken by the Hall brothers were discovered in a basement in Curtis Park.
