SUMMARY:Food Lover's Book Club: Jam
DESCRIPTION:Our favorite book club! Everyone is welcome and it’s fine if you haven’t read this month’s cookbook. About this month’s topic: “Not just for toast.” That’s what Kathy Lee of Modern Gingham Preserves has to say about jam. And indeed\, the condiment has come along way from Smuckers. You could even say jam is having a moment: it’s sweet and savory (ever tasted tomato-vanilla?)\, it’s stirred into cocktails\, it’s pumped up with spirits; it’s served with cheese. Join Lee and 5280’s Food Editor Amanda M. Faison to discuss the glory of jam (and how to get better at making it!). Bonus: samples!! \nFree event. \nMore info: https://www.denverlibrary.org/event?id=26626

SUMMARY:B-Side Thursdays: Elin Palmer and Light Racket & Chimney Choir
DESCRIPTION:B-Side Thursdays is a rooftop summer music series at the Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA) focused on presenting the best up and coming colorado bands + side projects of well known Denver bands and musicians. \nMusic 6p-8p\nMembers always FREE | Non-Members $5 admission after 5p; youth under 18 always free\nAll ages. Come early\, capacity limited. \nMore info: http://mcadenver.org/bsidemusic2016.php \nElin Palmer & Light Racket\nBorn in Värmland Sweden\, raised along the front range in Colorado\, Elin Palmer\, “one of the most accomplished storied musicians in Colorado Rock history” (Ricardo Baca\, Denver Post) and her band\, Light Racket\, exemplify that blend in their brand of Scandinavian indie folk-rock pop. The Swedish inspired sounds are grounding in their ethereal melodies\, providing an aural landscape at once lush and mythical as rune stones covered in moss. In addition to two solo albums\, Postcard (2010)\, and EP (2015)\, she has performed and/or recorded with aritsts such as Wovenhand\, Devotvhka\, Mark Mothersbaugh\, Max Berstein\, The Fray\, Jeff Zenter\, Boulder Ballet Co. and Ian Cooke. \nChimney Choir\nChimney Choir combines folk harmonies\, ambient electronics\, and swirling textures of rhythm and melody into a style of music that is not easy to define. They began in 2011 with a guitar\, banjo\, mandolin\, and suitcase drum and have since toured the country extensively\, recorded and released five recordings\, and developed layers of electronics\, live looping\, and percussion. They still remain fascinated with folk music and traditions while they constantly evolve and experiment – their performances often take on a theatrical quality that has incorporated puppetry\, ritual\, dance\, storytelling\, interactive video and even a sci-fi mini-drama. In collaboration with Denver’s cutting edge ballet company\, Wonderbound\, they created the full-length ballet ‘BOOMTOWN’\, which debuted in April 2015 to rave reviews and several encore performances. Their latest album\, (dream)\, is set to be released in the fall of 2016. The album deepens Chimney Choir’s ever-evolving remix-collage technique\, combining acoustic and electronic instrumentation\, sampling\, and evocative vocal and string arrangements with theatrical songwriting\, intricate percussion and ambient drones.

SUMMARY:NASA's Viking Project
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate the 40th anniversary of NASA’s Viking Missions\, marking the first successful landings on the surface of Mars. Two identical spacecraft (Viking 1 and Viking 2)\, each consisting of a nuclear-powered lander and a solar-powered orbiter\, were built. Each orbiter-lander was launched together and entered the Mars orbit in mid-1976; the landers then separated and descended to the planet’s surface. Both orbiters and landers returned a treasure trove of observations for several years. The missions had strong ties to our community—Viking Lander 1 and 2 were built in Denver at Martin Marietta’s Waterton Canyon facility. \nThis panel of engineers and scientists who worked on the Viking missions will share the challenges and triumphs\, and how the findings have continued to shape our understanding of the Red Planet: \n\nGuy Beutelschies participated in spacecraft engineering teams for numerous planetary exploration missions and serves as director of space exploration systems at Lockheed Martin Space Systems.\nDr. Ben Clark\, from the Space Science Institute\, developed the X-ray Fluorescence Spectrometer soil chemistry analyzers for the Viking Lander missions and served as Lockheed Martin’s chief scientist of space exploration systems.\nDr. Bruce Jakosky\, of LASP at the University of Colorado\, participated in the Mars Atmospheric Water Detector experiment on the Viking Orbiter missions and serves as the principal investigator of the MAVEN mission currently operating at Mars.\n\nTickets: $12 – $15 \nMore info and tickets: http://www.dmns.org/learn/adults/after-hours/nasas-viking-project/

Billy Overton started the project\, equal parts piano-focused songwriting and jittery-beat-making in his bedroom\, and Paul Buscarello of Fauxdephone contributes his multi-instrumental talents. Together they perform songs that delve deep into experimental ground and emotive musicality. \nMilk Blossoms\nThe Milk Blossoms believe in the subversive power of fragility within music\, within art\, within life\, and within each other. Combining ukulele\, expressive beatboxing and piano\, the trio blends to create dark pop music. SUMMARY:World Art Drop Day
DESCRIPTION:Hide art! Find art! World Art Drop Day is so much fun! \nWorld Art Drop Day – (First Tuesday in September) – September 6\, 2016 \n\nArt Drop Day is the brain-child of Jake Parker of Provo\, UT.  His goal was to help people feel a little more connected to one another and to create random bonds between strangers through the act of creating and giving. World Art Drop Day is the first Tuesday in September of every year. This year’s art drop will occur on September 6\, 2016.\nNot an artist? You can participate by watching social media channels and getting out there to find hidden art throughout our great city! Be on the lookout for clues to where you can find artwork such as miniature “Blue Bears” throughout Denver.\nYou can follow along on Denver Arts & Venues’ Facebook page and the World Art Drop Day website. You can also find out where art has been hidden in Denver by searching social media with the hashtag #artdropdenver\n\nFor Artists: \n\nMake art (sculpture\, drawing\, doodle\, painting\, cartoon\, etc.)\nAttach World Art Drop Day info sheet to your artwork\nHide/drop the art in the city where you find yourself on September 6\nTake a photo of the art\, or the hiding spot\, or a combination of both\nPost the image\, the city it’s dropped in and hints on social media of your choice – use hash tags #artdropday and #artdropdenver\nMove on and wait for someone to find your artwork – or hang out\, watch and make a new friend!\n\nMore info from Denver Arts and Venues on Art Drop Day in Denver: http://artsandvenuesdenver.com/events-programs/art-drop-day-denver/ \nMore info from the official World Art Drop Day site: http://mrjakeparker.com/art-drop-day

SUMMARY:B-Side Thursdays: Snails and Oysters & DéCollage
DESCRIPTION:B-Side Thursdays is a rooftop summer music series at the Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA) focused on presenting the best up and coming colorado bands + side projects of well known Denver bands and musicians. \nMusic 6p-8p\nMembers always FREE | Non-Members $5 admission after 5p; youth under 18 always free\nAll ages. Come early\, capacity limited. \nMore info: http://mcadenver.org/bsidemusic2016.php \nSnails and Oysters \nDéCollage\nIf Salvador Dali’s paintings were music\, they would sound like déCollage. Formed in 2009 by Moon Magnet Studio’s ringleader\, Reed Fuchs\, déCollage is hardly a four-piece\, as over 20 of Denver’s most creative musicians chose to participate\, including members of Rose Quartz\, Candy Claws/Sound of Ceres\, Rubedo and many more. Their shows are theatrical\, free-spirited parties; interactive to the point the audience gets doused in space blankets while transcendental artists paint on stage. déCollage has played alongside the likes of Animal Collective\, of Montreal\, Zammuto {The Books}\, and soon\, Deerhoof. Their eclectic Psych Pop incorporates accordion\, glockenspiel\, etc\, over a canvas of found sounds Reed records {typewriters\, trains\, leaves\, zippers\, oatmeal\, circuit bending}. Reed’s lyrics navigate our fragmented\, post-modern world through metaphysics\, surrealism\, abstraction\, and most of all wonder! déCollage is interested in sounds for their own sake; in this way their music is World\, the world of sound\, the world’s sound.
