DESCRIPTION:Please join Denver Arts & Venues to dedicate “Flower Girl” at the Denver Botanic Gardens into the Denver Public Art Collection. \n“Flower Girl” is a 5’ x 5’ x 5’ carved sculpture created by Madeline Wiener at the Denver Botanic Gardens Sensory Garden. The piece is a female figure created from Colorado Yule Marble (Colorado’s State Stone) with outstretched hands holding flowers; visitors are encouraged to interact with the piece\, climbing onto the marble and using her lap as a resting place. She is offering a lotus blossom in her right hand and holding a bouquet of stylized flowers that might be recognized throughout the Gardens. Those familiar with Wiener’s artistic style will find the piece immediately identifiable as one of her works. \nThis event is FREE and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served. Please enter through the Piñión Gate just north of the Visitor’s Center. \n[Free] \nMore info: http://artsandvenuesdenver.com/event/458575 \nAbout Madeline Wiener: Contemporary abstract figures in stone\, from marble to sandstone to granite\, have been Madeline Wiener’s main focus since studying at The New York School of Visual Arts from 1968-1974.  A trip to Italy and her many days of sketching sculptures at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art in New York began Madeline’s journey in stone. Founder/director of The Marble Institute of Colorado\, Madeline has remained intent on finding new and expressive ways to create her abstract figurative stone sculptures. Working trips to far-away places like Scotland and India have provided the opportunity to create site-specific\, monumental public installations and fulfilled Madeline’s dream of using her art to foster cultural exchange. The creation of the Marble Institute of Colorado’s MARBLE/marble Symposium has provided a venue for cultural exchanges between artists from different countries and varying disciplines. \nAbout the Sensory Garden: This unique garden utilizes architectural features and sensory plantings to enable people of all ages and abilities to interact with plants. Specialized gardening techniques and structures help to minimize barriers and maximize people’s abilities.

SUMMARY:Breakfast Lecture: The Science of Hydraulic Fracturing and Lessons for Colorado
DESCRIPTION:Oil and gas development in Colorado has become the source of many contentious policy debates in recent years. These debates often center on the potential risks and benefits associated with oil and gas development\, including the use of hydraulic fracturing to access oil and gas resources\, and the increased supply of fossil fuels made available by hydraulic fracturing. \nAcross these debates\, questions about the status of the science of the costs and benefits of oil and gas development arise. A panel of University of Colorado researchers from the AirWaterGas Sustainability Research Network will explore questions such as: \n\nWhat do we know about the health effects and safety of oil and gas development?\nWhat is the current research on the air and water quality effects of oil and gas production?\nHow are local communities and industry interacting and working together to address potential risks?\nWhat lessons might the current research suggest for policy and governance in Colorado?\n\nPanelists: \n\nJana Milford\, Professor\, Mechanical Engineering\, University of Colorado Boulder\nJohn L. Adgate\, PhD\, MSPH\, Professor and Chair\, Department of Environmental and Occupational Health\, Colorado School of Public Health\nHarihar Rajaram\, Professor\, Department of Civil\, Environmental and Architectural Engineering\, University of Colorado Boulder\nKathryn Mutz\, Attorney and Director of the Intermountain Oil and Gas BMP (Best Management Practices) Project\nOwen Sherwood\, Research Associate\, Institute for Arctic and Alpine Research (INSTAAR)\, University of Colorado Boulder\n\nModerators: Professors Tanya Heikkila and Chris Weible\, CU Denver School of Public Affairs \nWhen: 7:30-9 a.m. Friday\, Oct. 7\, 2016\nWhere: Terrace Room (2nd floor)\, 1380 Lawrence Street\, Denver (map)\nAdmission: Free\, but space is limited! SUMMARY:Write Denver: LoDo Alleyways
DESCRIPTION:NINE dot ARTS and Write Denver invite you to participate in a free\, generative workshop and public installation specifically for The Dairy Block\, a redevelopment project from Sage Hospitality\, McWhinney\, and Grand American Inc. Anchored by The Maven\, an independent boutique hotel\, The Dairy Block is unlike anything else in LoDo. \nLighthouse’s Write Denver team will curate the writing created from this event which NINE dot ARTS will then turn into text-based visual art for permanent\, outdoor installation in The Dairy Block’s alleyway\, slated to become a world-class shopping\, dining\, hospitality\, and office destination. The artwork will be a part of the alley’s large-scale art program that includes site-specific commissions by Denver artists Nikki Pike and Collin Parson as well as Boulder artist Jen Lewin. \nWrite Denver will provide various writing prompts beginning at the LoDo Tattered Cover (please at the front entrance) and ending at City Stacks Books & Coffee. Participants will be inspired by The Dairy Block’s storied history\, its present rebirth\, its future prominence\, as well as the concept of the alleyway as urban frontier. \nMore info: https://lighthousewriters.org/content/upcoming-events \n[Free]
