SUMMARY:Breakfast Lecture: The Science of Hydraulic Fracturing and Lessons for Colorado
DESCRIPTION:Oil and gas development in Colorado has become the source of many contentious policy debates in recent years. These debates often center on the potential risks and benefits associated with oil and gas development\, including the use of hydraulic fracturing to access oil and gas resources\, and the increased supply of fossil fuels made available by hydraulic fracturing. \nAcross these debates\, questions about the status of the science of the costs and benefits of oil and gas development arise. A panel of University of Colorado researchers from the AirWaterGas Sustainability Research Network will explore questions such as: \n\nWhat do we know about the health effects and safety of oil and gas development?\nWhat is the current research on the air and water quality effects of oil and gas production?\nHow are local communities and industry interacting and working together to address potential risks?\nWhat lessons might the current research suggest for policy and governance in Colorado?\n\nPanelists: \n\nJana Milford\, Professor\, Mechanical Engineering\, University of Colorado Boulder\nJohn L. Adgate\, PhD\, MSPH\, Professor and Chair\, Department of Environmental and Occupational Health\, Colorado School of Public Health\nHarihar Rajaram\, Professor\, Department of Civil\, Environmental and Architectural Engineering\, University of Colorado Boulder\nKathryn Mutz\, Attorney and Director of the Intermountain Oil and Gas BMP (Best Management Practices) Project\nOwen Sherwood\, Research Associate\, Institute for Arctic and Alpine Research (INSTAAR)\, University of Colorado Boulder\n\nModerators: Professors Tanya Heikkila and Chris Weible\, CU Denver School of Public Affairs \nWhen: 7:30-9 a.m. Friday\, Oct. 7\, 2016\nWhere: Terrace Room (2nd floor)\, 1380 Lawrence Street\, Denver (map)\nAdmission: Free\, but space is limited! SUMMARY:Indigenous Film and Arts Festival
DESCRIPTION:The Denver Museum of Nature and Science in partnership with the International Institute for Indigenous Resource Management (IIIRM) presents the Indigenous Film and Arts Festival. Join DMNS for the opening night of the festival for a screening of Message from Mungo. A dessert & coffee reception will follow the film.\n\n\nMessage from Mungo (directors Andrew Pike and Ann McGrath). In 1969\, erosion around Lake Mungo in New South Wales\, Australia revealed the cremated remains of Mungo Woman – to western scientists\, the earliest known cremation in the world; to the Aboriginal peoples of the area\, their ancestor. The story is told through interviews with archeologists\, local pastoralists\, government parks and heritage officers\, and members of the three traditional Aboriginal groups of the Mungo region (Mutthi Mutthi\, Ngiampaa\, and Barkindji/Paakintji). The Aboriginal communities are keen to have the film widely seen\, as it affirms the importance of their heritage and history\, and records their difficult struggle to gain a meaningful role in managing their heritage. (Ronin Films\, 2014\, 70 min.). \nChip Colwell\, Senior Curator of Anthropology\, will lead a post-screening discussion with the audience. \n[Free] \nMore info: http://www.dmns.org/learn/adults/after-hours/indigenous-film-festival/

SUMMARY:The Price of Peace
DESCRIPTION:Denver had proclaimed the second Monday of October Indigenous People’s Day. \nJoin History Colorado for a special film screening as part of the 13th annual Indigenous Film & Arts Festival. The Price of Peace (director Kim Webby) presents a well-rounded profile of Tame Iti – a man of peace\, a loving father and grandfather\, a kaumatua (elder) of his Ngāi Tūhoe tribe\, an artist\, performer\, and activist who has spent his life advocating for Māori rights. Tame’s life changed forever on October 15\, 2007.  In the dead of night\, heavily armed police in military style uniform raided his home and the homes of many more people in what became known as the infamous “terror raids.” For the next six years he fought to clear his name and the name of his Tūhoe people. This documentary follows Tame through the court system\, through his jail sentence\, and is with him on his return home. (Conbrio Media\, Ltd.\, 2015\, 82 min.). \nWelcome by Patricia Limerick\, State Historian. \nPost-screening Q&A by Morris Te Whiti Love. \nMore info: http://www.historycolorado.org/event/price-peace \n[Free\, $5 suggested donation]
