SUMMARY:Final Week: Kim Dickey: Words are Leaves
DESCRIPTION:KIM DICKEY: WORDS ARE LEAVES \nMCA Denver presents the first major survey of work by Boulder\, Colorado-based artist Kim Dickey. Kim Dickey: Words Are Leaves\, opening at MCA Denver October 7th\, showcases the ceramic works for which Dickey is best known\, as well as work in other media\, ranging from textile to photography. The exhibition highlights the artist’s ongoing study of pattern and decoration\, as well as her investigation of landscape design and the history of the garden; more than 60 works from the past 30 years demonstrate how Dickey brings the decorative to life. \nKim Dickey: Words Are Leaves represents the breadth of Dickey’s practice\, beginning with early works that are shaped by or redefine daily experience\, and including more recent works that reexamine decoration. Later works manifest an idealized or alternative environment. In exploring pattern and landscape\, Dickey has spent much of her career creating foliate objects and immersive installations. These works\, installed together for the first time in MCA’s presentation\, exemplify how the decorative can become an object\, and how an object can become an environment. \nThis retrospective is the first solo museum exhibition to survey all aspects of Kim Dickey’s work. It will be accompanied by a major publication with essays by Glenn Adamson\, Elissa Auther\, Ezra Shales\, Lisa Tamiris-Becker\, and an interview with the artist by Nora Burnett Abrams. \nThe exhibition is curated by Nora Burnett Abrams. Kim Dickey: Words Are Leaves is on view from October 7\, 2016 – January 22\, 2017 at MCA Denver. \n[Adults: $8 ($5 after 5p Tuesday – Friday); College Students w/ID: $5; 18 and Under: free] \nMore info: http://mcadenver.org/kimdickey

SUMMARY:Buddhism in Film: Groundhog Day
DESCRIPTION:This four-week series from the Denver Film Society investigates Buddhism in film. The series will look at two Korean films that explicitly\, and beautifully\, visually portray monastic Buddhism in Asia today\, and two films set in America which seem to carry significant Buddhist themes and references in surprising ways. Viewers are invited to consider the films as related pairs that highlight those themes through their very different perspectives. \n•Week One: Spring\, Summer\, Fall\, Winter … and Spring (Kim Ki-Duk) This beautiful Korean film sets a traditional Asian and monastic introduction to Buddhism in the context of a narrative that explores notions of desire and the cyclical Buddhist notion of history. \n•Week Two: Groundhog Day (Harold Ramis) A clever and popular American comedy\, the film explores similar questions of desire in a story that cleverly considers the possibility of improvement of the self within the cycle of life. Pairing these films enables us to discuss both the movement of Buddhist concepts into American culture and the way that a Buddhist outlook can serve as a critical lens revealing elements in a film. \n•Week Three: Why Has Bodhi Dharma Left for the East? (Day Young-Kyun) This quietly powerful film meditates on questions of suffering\, death and Buddhist vocation. It parallels Spring\, Summer … in many ways\, dealing with a master\, apprentice and child in a remote monastery\, but with much less interest in explaining Buddhist tenets. \n•Week Four: Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) (Alejandro G. Iñárritu) A satirical black comic/drama\, this Academy Award winning film engages questions about the meaning of identity and vocation. \nProfessor Jeffrey Mahan\, who teaches religion and film at Iliff School of Theology\, and Wm Jeavons\, a long-time Zen meditator and chaplain\, pose these questions for each other and the class about how film might illuminate Buddhism for us: \nIs Buddhism simply the subject of film\, or are ‘Buddhist films’ created by writers and directors whose ways of seeing or being in the world are inspired by Buddhist ideas or practice? \nCan Buddhism supply a critical lens through which we might view and understand movies: Is it then a perspective\, applicable across the board? \nCould both of the above be true? \n[$10 – $12] \nMore info and tickets: https://secure.denverfilm.org/tickets/film.aspx?id=29030&FID=90

SUMMARY:The Great Debate
DESCRIPTION:Buntport Theater’s “The Great Debate” pits teams of non-experts head-to-head\, toe-to-toe\, and often dumb-and-dumber in lively debates of the inconsequential. Mundane topics are brought to life by ordinary\, but opinionated folks. You’re bound to be a flip-flopper after listening to compelling arguments on things that never mattered. New topics every month! \nAbout this month’s installment: “We feel as though 2016 really forced us to grow up. We think you’ll be impressed with the level of our maturity when you find out that the debate topic is: Pu-pu platters vs Lake Titicaca \nBoom. We’re adulting like crazy. \nMake a reservation now so you can hear compelling arguments from our panel of experts: Hannah Duggan\, Brian Colonna\, Kim Kutt\, Roger Norquist\, Mike Marlow\, Laura Jo Trexler\, Rachel Weeks\, and Eryc Eyl.” \n[$7 online ($6-$8 at the door)] \nMore info and tickets: http://buntport.com/2016/09/third-tuesdays/

SUMMARY:Final Week: Bodacioussss
DESCRIPTION:BODACIOUSSSS\nOctober 8\, 2016 – January 29\, 2017\nBodacioussss presents over twenty artists whose work is not only changing the definition of art\, but also changing the ways in which art is produced and consumed. Unlike artists of the past century\, whose works were validated through recognition in museums and galleries\, the artists here move fluidly between physical and digital worlds\, fine art and commercial arenas\, and refined and popular styles. A hallmark of our age\, many of the artists represented in the exhibition present cultural and intellectual issues with deliberate childlike playfulness and absurdity. \nThis exhibition also provides an alternative perspective on what is commonly called “post-internet” art by contextualizing younger\, digital artists within an earlier generation of artists who also pioneered an informal\, or DIY\, style of art making. \nThe word “bodacious” derives from combining “bold” and “audacious.” In a nod to the vernacular of text messages\, the extra S’s were added for emphasis. \nBodacioussss was co-curated by Taylor Balkissoon and Adam Lerner. \nList of artists: \n\nTrudy Benson\nDara Birnbaum\nCaroline David\nAoife Dunne\nTravis Egedy\nSessa Englund\nDon Fodness\nAaron Garber-Maikovska\nKim Gordon\nHanski\nKeith Haring\nParker Ito\nKytten Janae\nMike McDonnell\nJayson Musson\nAlexander Page\nGary Panter\nPOSE\nOwvbics\nSomething by Someone\nPeter Sutherland\nKatie Torn\nKyle Warfield\n\n\n\n\n\n[Adults: $8 ($5 after 5p Tuesday – Friday); College Students w/ID: $5; 18 and Under: free] \nMore info: http://mcadenver.org/bodacioussss

SUMMARY:Tiny Library Concert: The Still Tide
DESCRIPTION:History Colorado welcomes in the new year with the luminous sound of The Still Tide to the Tiny Library Concert stage in January! \nHaving left behind New York City’s jagged cityscape for the mountains of Denver’s skyline\, indie rock trio The Still Tide has at last found a place to call home. Featuring the spacious songwriting and tender guitar work of front-woman Anna Morsett (Ark Life\, These United States)\, their latest EP “Half Empty Rooms” refracts the grit and urgency of city life through the lens of Colorado’s clean air and open space\, creating “… a little sweet spot where indie rock\, shoe-gaze and folk rock all intersect” (Blurt Online). \nHistory Colorado’s Tiny Library Concert series features performances by local Colorado musicians in the unusual and intimate setting of the museum’s Stephen H. Hart Library and Research Center. Beer\, wine\, and cocktails will be available for purchase. \n[$9 – $12] \nMore info and tickets: http://www.historycolorado.org/researchers/tiny-library-concerts

SUMMARY:Buddhism in Film: Why Has Bodhi Dharma Left for the East?
