SUMMARY:Denver History Night: The Centenary of WWI
DESCRIPTION:In early April 1917\, the United States intervened in World War I.  As the government mobilized soldiers\, supplies\, and funds\, it also enacted a propaganda program aimed at encouraging pro-war sentiments—and at stifling dissent (through vigilantism\, if necessary). The ensuing government-induced hysteria led to widespread repression and reaction. \nDenver experienced its share of upheavals\, and Phil Goodstein’s lecture will focus on how the city experienced the war and the disruptions that came in its wake. \n[Free] \nMore info: http://www.citystacks.com/event/denver-history-night-centenary-wwi

SUMMARY:Northwest Denver: Altruism to Amusement
DESCRIPTION:For most of its history\, thanks to its geography\, northwest Denver has felt like a world apart from the rest of the city. Separated by railroad tracks and the South Platte River\, and with much of its land elevated above downtown Denver\, the northwest side attracted those who wanted to leave behind the dirt and sin of the early city. Successive waves of immigrants endowed the area with their own cultural traditions. Northwest Denver has also been a pleasure ground\, home to Elitch Gardens\, Lakeside\, and Manhattan Beach amusement parks\, beautiful lakes\, and other amenities. Join local author Mark Barnhouse as he discusses his book\, Northwest Denver\, and highlights how this area has evolved along with its recent renewal in popularity as newcomers and longtime Denverites rediscover its charms. \n[$4 – $5] \nMore info and tickets: http://www.historycolorado.org/event/northwest-denver-altruism-amusement

SUMMARY:Storm Warning Symposium: On Balance / Art\, Science and Politics in the 21st Century
DESCRIPTION:How do artists contribute to environmental policy? Join a discussion at the University of Denver on climate change\, sustainability\, and the hidden cost of our consumer culture. \n  \nFree and open to the public \nSchedule: \n11:00 Coffee and welcoming remarks from gallery director Dan Jacobs \n11:30 Gregory Heming lecture: The Storm Cloud of the Twenty-First Century: Lecture I In honor of John Ruskin \n12:00 Panel Discussion with Susan Camp\, J. Henry Fair\, Dr. Phaedra Pezzullo and Dr. Heidi Steltzer moderated by Gregory Heming \n— following the panel discussion there will be a brief Q&A \n1:45 Break for refreshments \n3:00 J Henry Fair: The Hidden Costs of Goods Sold \nPanelists and Speakers: \nGregory Heming  is an educator and speaker with a PhD in Ecology who has spoken\, written and published on economics\, environment and public policy. \nDr. Phaedra Pezzullo is an associate professor in the Department of Communication and Culture at the University of Colorado at Boulder whose personal interests are in environmental communication\, environmental justice\, tourist studies and public advocacy. \nDr. Heidi Steltzer is an associate professor of biology at Fort Lewis College in Durango\, CO. Heidi is currently in Australia\, recently returned from Antarctica\, and is involved in so many projects that I can’t keep up.  Her particular passion is environmental science and research\, environmental communication\, and in creating opportunity and advocacy for women/girls in science. \nSusan Camp  is a sculptor/printmaker based in rural Maine who is currently an Assistant Professor at the University of Maine in Orono\, where she teaches printmaking\, sculpture and foundations.  With a focus on minimizing the environmental impact of her practice\, Susan makes biodegradable artwork from constrained gourds which are grown into her molds\, which have been exhibited widely.  Susan is a “think globally/act locally” artist/activist who has created several community projects around her work that provide a nexus for learning and discussion about environmental issues including local farming/production and/vs Big-Agra. \nJ. Henry Fair is an internally recognized photographer\, author and environmental activist who is perhaps best known for his photographs of eco-disasters from the air.  Henry’s deceptively beautiful\, swirling abstractions draw the viewer in and which then\, on further inspection\, turn out to be horrific industrial scars. \nLocation:  \nLindsay Auditorium at Sturm Hall \n2000 E.
