SUMMARY:Creative Mornings: Dr. Carly Howett
DESCRIPTION:So much of our universe has been or continues to be beyond our ability to easily study or comprehend. As a senior research scientist on the New Horizons team\, Dr. Carly Howett studies the planet beyond all others in our solar system: Pluto. The images returned by the New Horizons satellite revolutionized our understanding of the Pluto system\, transforming it from a demoted planet into an enticing ice world. This talk will focus on how she and her colleagues creatively solved the problem of studying a planet nearly beyond our solar system and brought it back from beyond our understanding. \nDr. Carly Howett is a Senior Research Scientist at the Southwest Research Institute in Boulder Colorado. She obtained her Ph.D. at the University of Oxford in 2005\, and has been working on New Horizons since 2012. Since then her main interest has been the calibration and image processing of data from New Horizon’s Ralph instrument – the color “eyes” of the spacecraft. She is also on NASA’s Cassini mission\, which has been investigating the Saturn-system since 2004. Outside of work she enjoys all the forms of running\, jumping and outdoor-stupidity Colorado has to offer\, particularly cycling\, skiing\, swimming and climbing. \n[Free | Registration required] \nRegistration opens MON 4/10 at 9a! \nMore info and registration: https://creativemornings.com/talks/carly-howett

SUMMARY:Tiny Library Concert: Jake Schepps and Round Window
DESCRIPTION:Colorado’s banjo renaissance man\, Jake Schepps\, has made a name for himself as an adroit instrumentalist with an intrepid\, imaginative vision for contemporary string-band music. His nimble touch and deep sensitivity to the five-string banjo’s idiomatic qualities are rooted in traditional and progressive bluegrass styles\, yet his insatiable curiosity and open spirit have brought him to an exciting frontier of new acoustic music. \nThis special Tiny Library Concert features Jake Schepps with his latest project\, Round Window. Schepps has gathered an intrepid group of musicians to play a brand new score composed by Schepps live to Buster Keaton’s classic silent comedy film\, “The Scarecrow.” In addition\, get ready for Brazilian choro\, bluegrass\, and classical music from string-band Round Window\, featuring Bill Kopper (7-string guitar)\, Enion Pelta-Tiller (violin)\, Eric Thorin (double bass)\, Carl Dixon (percussion)\, and Schepps (banjo). \nHistory Colorado’s Tiny Library Concert series is generously supported by Airshow Mastering and features performances by local Colorado musicians in the unusual and intimate space of the museum’s Stephen H. Hart Library & Research Center. Beer\, wine\, and cocktails available for purchase. \n[Members $9\, non-members $12] \nMore info and tickets: http://www.historycolorado.org/event/tiny-library-concert-featuring-jake-schepps-and-round-window

SUMMARY:Czech That Film: Tiger Theory
DESCRIPTION:Ticket price includes a pre-reception.\nReception in Henderson’s Lounge beginning at 6pm \nA huge box-office hit in its homeland\, veteran journalist-cum-filmmaker Radek Bajgar’s poignant debut feature is a tragicomic road movie concerning Jan (legendary Czech actor Jirí Bartoška)\, an ageing veterinary surgeon who believes himself a henpecked shadow of his former\, untamed self. Eventually he comes to adopt certain unorthodox measures in order to extricate himself from his detested domesticated life on the treadmill and to once more hear\, and respond to\, the call of the wild. \nJan is not the only one grappling with an existential crisis\, however; so too his daughters and the men they married\, in a terrific film which enjoys having a little sport with contemporary Czech gender relations\, yet never reduces its flawed but sympathetic characters to caricatures.\nPreceded by the short film Malý Cousteau (Kouril) \n[$20 – $25] \nMore info and tickets: http://secure.denverfilm.org/tickets/film.aspx?id=29093

SUMMARY:Sunday School for Atheists: Minority Interests?
DESCRIPTION:Wyoming has the same representation in the Senate as California. The Senate was created\, in part\, to protect a minority interest: rural people. What other minority interests could we imagine protecting? \nJoin Warm Cookies of he Revolution for a conversation about how we further invent and improve upon our community (local to global). What would working within the current framework look like (reserved elected seats for certain groups? reparations?) and what would need to happen before we can even start politically (cultural capacity\, knowledge\, money\, etc)? \nCo-hosted by Theo Wilson from Shop Talk Live and Rudy Gonzales from Servicios De La Raza\, with some political history framing by University of Denver’s Nancy Wadsworth. \nSunday School for Atheists is for everyone (spiritual but not religious\, recovering Catholics\, evangelicals\, bike-riding Mormons\, believers in The Secret\, and whatever it is you call yourself). Previous topics: forgiveness\, resistance\, obedience\, love\, friendship\, elcoming prisoners back into the community\, killing\, body image\, and more. Come help us explore the further invention of democracy. \nAs always Warm Cookies will have delicious cookies\, Spanish/English interpretation\, and childcare (if requested). \n[$5 suggested donation (no one is turned away for lack of funds)]\n\nMore info: http://www.warmcookiesoftherevolution.org/event/sunday-school-for-atheists-minority-interests/

SUMMARY:Pigeons Like You've Never Seen
DESCRIPTION:Sure\, you see them everyday\, but how much do you really know about pigeons? \nSOME FACTS: The rock pigeon was likely among the first domesticated bird species\, nearly 5\,000 years ago. It is also one of the most anatomically diverse. Charles Darwin noted that the differences among breeds within this one species are equivalent to the diversity typically seen across different groups of birds. \nMichael Shapiro\, who specializes in biology and human genetics at the University of Utah\, is using traditional breeding experiments and cutting-edge genetic techniques to uncover differences in pigeon plumage and other anatomical traits. The unassuming pigeon is providing important new clues about evolutionary change\, diseases in humans\, and more. Consider the nuances of this common bird and deepen your appreciation for the pigeon’s place in the modern world. \n[$12 – $15] \nTickets and info: http://www.dmns.org/learn/adults/after-hours/pigeons-like-youve-never-seen/
