SUMMARY:Lecture: Still & Art
DESCRIPTION:Join the Still Museum for a thought-provoking lecture with Still & Art curator David Anfam to examine Still’s dialogue with world art history and its impact on Still as an artist. \nAt the time of his mammoth 1979 retrospective at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York\, Clyfford Still provocatively declared\, “My work is not influenced by anybody.” While many observers have regarded this view as merely typical of the artist’s notoriously intransigent sense of isolation\, in hindsight Still’s words ring true at a deeper level. On one hand\, the concept of “influence” suggests external forces—other artists\, received knowledge\, history\, and so forth—acting upon a passive mind. On the other hand\, Still’s vision was intensely active. As such\, his deep knowledge of world art history enabled him to “take and break\,” as it were\, a wealth of images and ideas ranging from the distant to the recent past. He then transformed these points of reference into his own intensely personal idiom. \nPonti Hall at the Denver Art Museum\n[Free | Registration required] \nMor info and registration: https://clyffordstillmuseum.org/event/lecture-still-art/

SUMMARY:Creative Mornings: Sunni Brown
DESCRIPTION:Creative Mornings = Inspiration + Breakfast \nAnyone who’s ever dipped a toe into the creative process knows it can be brutal. Pursuing personal projects or dreams – and putting them out there to be seen by others – can feel like navigating a very treacherous gauntlet. Even while we’re nudged by deep creative longings\, most of us are deterred from taking action every step of the way. We second-guess\, we doubt\, we self-criticize\, we get despondent or frustrated\, we quit. Sometimes we tell ourselves it’s about time or money\, about a lack of essential resources\, but from my experience\, it’s usually about something else entirely\, something I refer to as “the internal human voiceover.” Whether you’ve tuned into yours or not\, we ALL have internal voiceovers – ongoing soundtracks in our minds that are active\, opinionated\, ruthlessly critical and can prevent us from taking creative risks. If we consistently believe their party lines AND we have no tools to work skillfully with them\, the creative process will almost invariably shut down. This talk introduces a powerful and proven technique to meet and befriend different parts of ourselves that arise when we attempt to create so that we can finally make an authentic contribution despite our negative self-talk. \nThis Month’s Speaker: \nSunni is an author\, speaker\, coach\, expert meeting facilitator and founder of the creative consultancy SB Ink. She was named one of the “100 Most Creative People in Business” and one of the “10 Most Creative People on Twitter” by Fast Company. Her team has designed and led hundreds of group experiences in diverse industries and she is a veteran public speaker\, having delivered countless presentations and “playnotes” in environments around the world. Sunni is the best-selling author of Gamestorming and The Doodle Revolution and she leads a worldwide campaign advocating for visual\, game\, design and improvisational thinking. Her TED Talk on doodling has drawn more than 1.2 million views on TED.com and her work has been featured in every major U.S. publication including The New York Times\, The New York Post\, The Wall Street Journal\, Time Magazine\, WIRED\, and Entrepreneur\, as well as being featured twice on CBS Sunday Morning. \n[Free] \nRegistration opens MON 9/25 at 9a \nMore info: https://creativemornings.com/talks/sunni-brown

DESCRIPTION:Ashlee Mack\, director of piano studies\, Knox College\nJames Romig\, professor of music theory and composition\, Western Illinois University \nMusic exists in time\, which moves in only one direction. Because of this\, many works of music provide a listener with a relatively narrow aesthetic path. A viewer of visual art\, on the other hand\, is usually free to choose which artwork to observe and determines his or her own aesthetic experience. \nTaking inspiration from the Clyfford Still Museum’s single-artist setting\, Still\, for Solo Piano\, composed by James Romig\, endeavors to create a “museum of sound\,” offering multiple variations of harmony and rhythm that refer to color and form in Clyfford Still’s paintings. Join Ashlee Mack and James Romig for a gallery performance of this work\, with a short talk after the performance. \nLanny and Sharon Martin Galleries \n[Free | Registration required] \nMore info and registration: https://clyffordstillmuseum.org/event/perfomance-still-for-solo-piano/ \n
