SUMMARY:Art and Politics in Late 18th Century New Spain
DESCRIPTION:In 1795\, the viceroy of New Spain\, Manuel de la Grúa\, requested permission to erect a monumental equestrian sculpture in honor of Charles IV\, King of Spain. Shortly after the unveiling of the bronze monument in Mexico City in 1796\, a painted equestrian portrait of the deceased former viceroy\, Bernardo de Galvez\, was completed. However\, the painting\, although seemingly emulating the royal equestrian motif\, seems at odds with the official public work. \nBy examining the Galvez portrait’s dissonant attributes in relation to its context of production\, what issues\, problems\, or questions can be raised that may provide insight into the political environment of late colonial New Spain? \nThe lecture will be presented by Ray Hernández-Durán\, Associate Professor\, Department of Art and Art History\, University of New Mexico. \nDoors open at 2 pm. \nPurchase tickets at the door. Free for Alianza members; $5 for DAM members; $10 others; free for students with valid ID. \nMore info: http://denverartmuseum.org/calendar/art-and-politics-late-18th-century-new-spain

DESCRIPTION:History Colorado is honored to present two legends of Colorado folk music\, Harry Tuft and Dick Weissman\, with special guest Julia Hays on the Tiny Library Concert stage this spring. Guitarist Harry Tuft is best known as the godfather of folk in the Rocky Mountain region. In 1962\, he opened the Denver Folklore Center\, which became the epicenter of the folk music revival in Colorado in the 1960s and ’70s. He was a founding member of the Colorado folk group Grubstake. Banjo master Dick Weissman started his musical career in the Greenwich Village folk scene in the 1960s and was a member of the folk trio The Journeymen with John Phillips (later of The Mamas & the Papas) and Scott McKenzie. He is co-author of the award-winning Folk Music Songbook\, among many other publications. The two are joined by Julia Hays\, a virtuoso fiddle player with eclectic roots in blues\, jazz\, country\, Celtic and Irish fiddle styles. \nThe Tiny Library Concert series at History Colorado features acoustic shows by local Colorado musicians in the unusual and intimate setting of the museum’s Stephen H. Hart Library & Research Center. \nTickets: $10 non-members\, $7 members of History Colorado \nMore info and tickets: http://www.historycolorado.org/event/tiny-library-concert-featuring-harry-tuft-dick-weissman-and-julia-hays

SUMMARY:Beer Pots and Beadwork: Exploring South Sotho Arts from Southern Africa
DESCRIPTION:Art is an expression of ourselves and the world in which we live\, and the study of visual art allows us to gain nuanced understandings of the many cultures within our global society. This notion serves as the point of departure for Colorado State University art historian David Riep\, who will discuss his field research among South Sotho populations in South Africa and Lesotho\, which took place between 2007 and 2011. \nFrom beer pots to beadwork\, Riep will discuss the unique formal aspects of South Sotho visual arts\, and highlight how unique form\, pattern\, and color are used to promote identity and cultural affiliation. In addition\, Riep will share his experiences working with South Sotho artists\, oral historians\, kings\, chiefs\, and religious practitioners in order to locate local perspectives on their art and history\, and to understand how the visual arts function in South Sotho society. \nCheck-in at North Building\, lower level. \nTickets are $5 for Friends of Native Arts members\, $10 for DAM members\, $12 others\, free for students with ID. \nMore info and tickets: http://denverartmuseum.org/calendar/beer-pots-and-beadwork-exploring-south-sotho-arts-southern-africa

SUMMARY:Museums and Making in the 21st Century
DESCRIPTION:Free and open to the public. \nThree times each year\, the Clyfford Still Museum presents a seasonal keynote. Curators\, art historians\, cultural theorists and other luminaries are invited to present on a special topic related to a special exhibition or to larger concerns in the field of art\, art history\, culture\, and museums. This season\, join Glenn Adamson for a discussion about the practice of making in contemporary art and craft and its intersection with museum practice. \nIn recent years\, we have seen a huge resurgence of interest in making of all kinds. Among amateurs\, artists and designers alike\, there is a newfound respect for skill\, craftsmanship\, and material intelligence. What is the role of museums\, traditionally places for quiet reflection\, in fostering this enthusiasm for interactive process? Adamson will consider this question and discuss the live activation-oriented approach that he and his team are pursuing at MAD. \nSharp Auditorium at the Denver Art Museum\nFree | Registration Required \nMore info and registration: https://clyffordstillmuseum.org/event/spring-keynote-museums-and-making-in-the-21st-century/

SUMMARY:Doors Open Denver Weekend
DESCRIPTION:Doors Open Denver (DOD) is an annual two-day event (this year on SAT 4/23 and SUN 4/24) that gives residents and visitors the chance to explore our city and take a free peek inside 68 of Denver’s unique spaces\, including high-profile\, historic and/or artistic feats of architecture and design. The 47 DOD Insider Tours ($10 per tour) from Denver Architectural Foundation are led by local experts\, offer special access at some sites and are a great way to learn about Denver’s past\, present and future. Popular tours (like the D & F Tower on 16th Street Mall – a tour is the ONLY way to go up to the top) sell out quickly\, so take a look at the offerings ahead of time and be ready to book your favorites on the 8th! [$10 per person per tour] \nMore info on participating sites and Insider Tours: http://doorsopendenver.com
