SUMMARY:Astronomy on Tap
DESCRIPTION:Science is even better with beer! Astronomy on Tap brings together free astronomy lectures AND free pours of some amazing\, Colorado-sourced beer from Wynkoop! \nFREE event \nMore info: https://www.facebook.com/events/1582705898690075/ \nThis month’s presenters include:\n\nBecky Nevin: \nBecky Nevin is a graduate fellow in the astrophysics and planetary science department at the University of Colorado Boulder. She spends her time searching for galaxies that have more than one black hole. When she’s not learning about black holes\, you can find her skiing or walking around in the mountains or playing frisbee in the lowlands\, all the while drinking beer. \nTalk:\n“It came from space: The solar system’s ultimate weapon”-Learn all about the infamous asteroid that wiped out the dinosaurs and left us without pet T-Rex’s\, Brontosaurs cars\, and Pterodactyl delivery services. \nThomas Rogers: \nThomas Rogers is a CU Astrophysics grad student\, graduating this summer. For his thesis project\, Thomas designed and built a soft X-ray spectrograph which was launched on a suborbital sounding rocket in May\, 2015. Thomas named the instrument the Off-plane Grating Rocket for Extended Source Spectroscopy (OGRESS). OGRESS was designed to observe diffuse extended sources such as nearby supernova remnants\, which can be several degrees across on the sky. After his graduation\, Thomas will be designing and building spacecraft as a Systems Engineer at Ball Aerospace. \nTopic:\nThomas will talk about sounding rockets\, including a bit of their history\, what they’re used for\, and why they’re important for science and technology development. \nBaylee Bordwell \nBaylee Bordwell is a graduate student in the astrophysics and planetary science department at the University of Colorado Boulder. She spends her time exploring how fluid motion effects chemical reactions in the atmospheres of gas giant planets. When escape from her cubicle is possible\, she runs to the hills (literally) to backpack and climb. \nTalk:\n“Would you like to know more?” – An interactive newscast from an alternate universe where the human race is engaged in an intragalactic war against an insectoid menace known colloquially as “bugs”. Using our modern knowledge of planets (and exoplanets)\, we can learn quite a lot about the bugs themselves\, their homeworld\, and what intragalactic war would be like…..did you just say Intergalactic War!?

Brothers John Siegel and Ted Siegel spend many of their days perfecting new records at a handmade studio adjacent to residence in the hills of Mulholland Highway that overlook Los Angeles. They have become mainstays at a nearby Southern Californian institution\, The Old Place\, regularly performing for patrons at the ever-packed restaurant in the mountains. There\, they caught the ear of the late bassist Rick Rosas (Neil Young\, Joe Walsh)\, who became a mentor to the group. They spend their remaining hours rigorously touring\, headlining shows across the country while attracting the attention of sonic peers such as alt-country act The White Buffalo and Mississippi Blues legend Watermelon Slim\, playing with both on several occasions. The Deltaz have had their music placed on CMT and MTV television shows such as Jersey Shore and Party Down South.

SUMMARY:City Park Jazz: Imagine featuring Melvin Seals (Jerry Garcia Band)\, Ray White (Frank Zappa)\, Damon Wood (James Brown) & Friends
DESCRIPTION:Melvin is best known for his long friendship and musical partnership with cultural icon and guitarist Jerry Garcia and the smile of his that lights up the room. Melvin spun his B-3 magic with the Jerry Garcia Band for 18 years and in doing so helped pioneer and define what has now become “Jam Band Music”. \nThe best is yet to come. From blues to funk to rock to bluegrass\, The Mix serves up a tasty mix with a little R&B and gospel thrown in to spice things up. Each member of this powerhouse lineup brings an intuitive\, expressive style\, soul\, spontaneity and remarkable chops to the table. With acoustic and electric ingredients and unique combinations of guitar\, mandolin\, slide and lap steel with savory bass\, hearty drums and\, of course\, a heapin’ helpin’ of the wizard’s magic on Hammond B-3 Organ and keyboards\, the result is a most satisfying blend of natural organic grooves that challenges genre boundaries. \nThe Melvin Seals’ performances are a must see\, must feel experience! Their music is guaranteed to get into your soul\, raise your spirit and get you groin’! \nAll City Park Jazz concerts are FREE and take place rain or shine at the bandstand by the pavilion on Ferril Lake \nFree parking is available throughout the park—please be a good neighbor and avoid parking on side-streets around the park. Or better yet\, ride your bike and enjoy free bike parking monitored by City Park Jazz volunteers at the Bike Corral in the Pavilion from 5:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. \nMore info: http://cityparkjazz.org
