SUMMARY:Month of Photography Lecture Series: Gary Emrich
DESCRIPTION:Month of Photography Lecture Series\nFor 2017’s Month of Photography Denver\, The Denver Art Museum is pleased to present four Front Range photographers working across the diverse spectrum of the medium:\nMarch 3: Carol Golemboski\nMarch 17\,: Andrew Beckham\nMarch 23: Gary Emrich\nMarch 30: Benjamin Rasmussen \nAll talks start at 7:00 – 8:30 PM\nHamilton Building\, Lower Level\nDoors open at 6:30 p.m. \nMarch 23\, 2017: Gary Emrich\nA fourth-generation Coloradan\, Gary Emrich uses humor and pop-culture iconography to both celebrate and poke fun at the myths of the West in his art. Making what he calls “straight photographs in the studio\,” Emrich constructs his images from found and collected materials that include family mementos\, kitsch objects\, and even throw-away packaging. Through his inventive recontextualizations\, he addresses deeper concerns like water scarcity\, the aerospace industry\, and personal memories. Promise\, an exhibition of Emrich’s recent work in photography and video\, was featured at the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center in 2016. \n[$5 – $10]\nView more info Here

SUMMARY:Rumble in the Bronx
DESCRIPTION:Jackie Chan in his breakout role! \nAfter years as a major star in most of the rest of the world\, Jackie Chan finally broke through to stardom in the United States with Rumble in the Bronx\, a dubbed and re-edited version of Hung Fan Kui. Here Chan plays Keung\, a police officer from Hong Kong who travels to New York to attend the wedding of his uncle\, Bill (Bill Tung). Bill has just sold his grocery store to Elaine (Anita Mui)\, and Keung finds Elaine to be a pretty good reason to extend his visit to New York. However\, a mean-spirited and fashion-challenged street gang has moved into the neighborhood and is demanding protection money from the local storekeepers. Elaine is ready to sell the store and move on\, but Keung is determined to show the toughs that he’s not about to be pushed around. Things get even more sticky when the hoods are on the trail of a lost cache of stolen jewels. \nHong Kong\, 1995\, 87 min \nRoger Ebert wrote: “Any attempt to defend this movie on rational grounds is futile. Don’t tell me about the plot and the dialogue. Don’t dwell on the acting. The whole point is Jackie Chan – and\, like Astaire and Rogers\, he does what he does better than anybody. There is a physical confidence\, a grace\, an elegance to the way he moves. There is humor to the choreography of the fights (which are never too gruesome). He’s having fun. If we allow ourselves to get in the right frame of mind\, so are we.” \n[$7 – $11] \nMore info and tickets: http://secure.denverfilm.org/tickets/buy.aspx?FID=84&ID=45647

SUMMARY:Opera: Les Contes d'Hoffmann
DESCRIPTION:From Opéra de Paris: Les Contes d’Hoffmann \nBy the time he came to tackle the composition of Les Contes d’Hoffmann\, Offenbach’s opus already included more than a hundred operas. Left unfinished when he died during rehearsals in October 1880\, his last work combines fantasy\, gravity and humour in an unexpectedly innovative synthesis of opera buffa\, romantic opera and grand opera. This adaptation of three tales by E.T.A. Hoffmann\, with a sprinkling of Goethe’s Faust\, portrays the German poet as both narrator and hero recounting his love affairs with Olympia\, Antonia and Giuletta. Robert Carsen’s spectacular production highlights the melancholy genius of a man marked by life\, with a coherence and dramatic sense remarkable for a work that leaves numerous questions unanswered. Under the baton of Philippe Jordan\, Nadine Koutcher\, Stéphanie d’Oustrac\, Kate Aldrich\, Yann Beuron and Ramón Vargas\, in the title role\, interpret the legendary airs of this work whose brilliant mystery will continue to dazzle opera houses for countless years to come. \nConductor: Philippe Jordan\nDirector: Robert Carsen\nCast: Ramón Vargas\, Nadine Koutcher\, Kate Aldrich\, Ermonela Jaho\, Stéphanie d’Oustrac\, Doris Soffel \nFrench\, English Subtitles\, France\, 2016\, 205 min \n[$15 – $18] \nMore info and tickets: http://secure.denverfilm.org/tickets/film.aspx?id=29007 \n  \n

SUMMARY:A Photographic Truth: Mark Osterman\, George Eastman Museum
DESCRIPTION:From the time the inventors of photography struggled to produce and preserve the earliest attempts at chemical imagery\, photographers have used the medium to create their own truths.  In the illustrated lecture\, A Photographic Truth\, Mark Osterman presents a humorous and informative look at how certain elements of photography are inherently untruthful and subject to manipulation.  Osterman’s observations are based on primary research inspecting original artifacts from the George Eastman Museum collection\, as well as his experiences recreating photographic processes that include the asphalt heliographs of Nicephore Niepce up to the earliest attempts of the Edison laboratory’s motion picture film. \n[Free] \nMore info: http://www.redlineart.org/upcomingevents/2017/2/23/a-photographic-truth-mark-osterman-george-eastman-museum \n About Mark Osterman \nMark Osterman\, Photographic Process Historian for the George Eastman Museum in Rochester\, New York\, teaches public and private workshops in early photographic processes from Niepce heliographs to gelatin emulsions. After beginning his research into historic photographic processes while attending the Kansas City Art Institute in the 1970s\, he went on to co-publish The Collodion Journal from 1995-2002\, and write and edit portions of the New Focal Encyclopedia of Photography. For ten years Osterman taught process identification for the Advanced Residency Program in Photograph Conservation at Eastman Museum\, and his writings have become important references for the international conservation community. While widely recognized as the foremost expert in the evolution of photography\, Osterman is best known for his research in the collodion variants. Through his research\, writings\, exhibitions and teaching\, he has been an important influence in the current revival of collodion technique in fine art photography. \nOsterman’s work is included in numerous private and museum collections including Nihon University\, in Tokyo\, Japan; Maison Européenne de la Photographie\, Paris\, France; Museum of Fine Art\, Houston; Musée de l’Elysée\, in Lausanne\, Switzerland; and the George Eastman Museum\, in Rochester\, New York.  His images and writing are featured many publications\, such as Photography’s Antiquarian Avant-Garde\, The New Wave in Old Process Photography\, by Lyle Rexer; Coming into Focus\, by John Barnier\, and The Book of Alternative Photographic Processes\, by Christopher James.  He is currently represented by Howard Greenberg Gallery in New York City\, Photo Gallery International in Tokyo\, Japan\, and Tilt Gallery in Scottsdale\, Arizona.

SUMMARY:Month of Photography Lecture Series: Benjamin Rasmussen
DESCRIPTION:Month of Photography Lecture Series\nFor 2017’s Month of Photography Denver\, The Denver Art Museum is pleased to present four Front Range photographers working across the diverse spectrum of the medium:\nMarch 3: Carol Golemboski\nMarch 17\,: Andrew Beckham\nMarch 23: Gary Emrich\nMarch 30: Benjamin Rasmussen \nAll talks start at 7:00 – 8:30 PM\nHamilton Building\, Lower Level\nDoors open at 6:30 p.m. \nAbout Benjamin Rasmussen: \nBenjamin Rasmussen grew up in a family of missionaries in the rural Philippines and questions of home\, community\, and identity were endemic to his childhood experience. These human connections have continued to drive his photographic practice. \nIn Down Hernani Shores\, Rasmussen documents the destruction and rebuilding of the town of Hernani\, Philippines\, in the wake of Typhoon Haiyan. Combining portraiture and landscape work\, along with drawings by the town’s children\, he reveals the effects of the typhoon on the residents’ lives and livelihoods. \nBy the Olive Trees\, a collaborative work with Michael Friberg self-published in newspaper format\, presents the olive tree as a marker of permanence in a place defined by its tenuousness—the Zaatari Syrian refugee camp in Jordan. \n[$5 – $10] \nMore info and tickets: http://denverartmuseum.org/calendar/month-photography-lecture-2017-benjamin-rasmussen

SUMMARY:Notes from Clyfford Still
DESCRIPTION:Commissioned by the Denver chamber group Playground Ensemble\, Notes from Clyfford Still is a new work by composer Nathan Hall. Using texts and quotes from Still’s personal notebooks and correspondence\, Hall paints a musical portrait of the artist showing not only his passionate and fiercely independent personality but also his moments of uncertainty\, introspection\, and tenderness.  As a companion piece to Hall’s recent 20 Works in 20 Minutes (performed in the Museum’s galleries in November of 2016)\, Notes from Clyfford Stillfeatures selections that interpret Clyfford Still’s works on paper and a new work for solo cello performed by Richard von Foerster. \nNow in its 11th season\, Playground Ensemble is Denver’s premiere chamber music organization and showcases adventurous new music from Colorado and beyond through concerts\, education curricula\, and creative collaborations. \n[Free | No registration required] \nMore info: https://clyffordstillmuseum.org/event/performance-notes-from-clyfford-still/

SUMMARY:Hero
DESCRIPTION:Starring Jet-Li and Donnie Yen! \nHero is two-time Academy Award nominee Zhang Yimou’s directorial attempt at exploring the concept of a Chinese hero. During the peak of their Warring States period\, China was divided into seven kingdoms all fighting for supremacy. Most determined to dominate China was the kingdom of Qin\, whose king (Chen Daoming) was wholly obsessed with becoming the first emperor of China. Though he was an assassination target for many\, none of his would-be killers inspired as much fear as the legendary assassins Broken Sword (Tony Leung)\, Flying Snow (Maggie Cheung)\, and Sky (Donnie Yen). In hopes of thwarting his death\, the king has promised endless wealth and power to anyone who defeats his would-be murderers. No results come until ten years later\, when a man called Nameless (Jet Li) brings the weapons of the three assassins to the Qin king’s palace. Nameless claims to be an expert swordsman who had defeated Sky and destroyed the famed duo of Flying Snow and Broken Sword by using their love for one another against them. Once Nameless comes face to face with the king\, however\, it looks as if the situation is more complicated than he had thought. Also featured in Hero is Zhang Ziyi (The Road Home\, Crouching Tiger\, Hiden Dragon) as Broken Sword’s devoted servant\, Moon. \n[$7 – $11] \nMore info and tickets: https://secure.denverfilm.org/tickets/film.aspx?id=22107&FID=90

SUMMARY:Denver History Night: The Centenary of WWI
DESCRIPTION:In early April 1917\, the United States intervened in World War I.  As the government mobilized soldiers\, supplies\, and funds\, it also enacted a propaganda program aimed at encouraging pro-war sentiments—and at stifling dissent (through vigilantism\, if necessary). The ensuing government-induced hysteria led to widespread repression and reaction. \nDenver experienced its share of upheavals\, and Phil Goodstein’s lecture will focus on how the city experienced the war and the disruptions that came in its wake. \n[Free] \nMore info: http://www.citystacks.com/event/denver-history-night-centenary-wwi
