SUMMARY:film/Still: BURDEN
DESCRIPTION:This season\, the Clyfford Still Museum is delighted to partner with Alamo Drafthouse to present films that relate to both the exhibitions on view at the Museum and the wider art world. At every screening\, you’ll enjoy more than 30 beers on tap; a full selection of wines and handcrafted cocktails; and a multicourse menu with service right to your seat. Join the Still for new art documentaries about important artists of the 20thcentury as well as films\, screened on the occasion of Shade: Clyfford Still / Mark Bradford\, that explore African American identity\, racism\, art\, and human relationships. \n\nBURDEN (Richard Dewey and Timothy Marrinan\, 2016\, 90 minutes)\nExperience the metamorphosis of the artist Chris Burden\, who guaranteed his place in art history beginning in 1971 while still a student in Southern California. Preceded by a period of often dangerous\, at times stomach-churning performances\, he then reinvented himself as a creator of captivating installations and sculptures\, including an assemblage of antique street lights rewired for solar energy on permanent display outside the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Critic Brian Gordon writes\, “For 45 years\, Chris Burden maintained a quest to challenge perceived boundaries of modern art in an always awe-inspiring manner. …Burdenmeticulously explores a complex\, ever-evolving individual who became one of the most admired artists of his generation.” \n[$8] \nPurchase tickets at drafthouse.com\nMultiple screenings daily. Check Alamo Drafthouse website for listings.\nFree bottomless popcorn for CSM members with member ID.

Whether she’s performing “Little Girl Blue” and a Langston Hughes tribute\, alternately barking at or complimenting the audience (or getting them to sing with – or instead of – her)\, making cryptic comments to herself about show business or life in general\, or dancing in high heels to African drums (when she isn’t simply listening to them\, or adding a piano riff)\, she’s such a commanding and powerful presence. (summary adapted from www.jonathanrosenbaum.net/2003/01/nina-simone-love-sorceress/) \n**Charles Mingus: Triumph of the Underdog\nThis documentary focuses on the life and music of jazz composer Charles Mingus (1922-1979)\, combining archival footage and interviews with two of his wives\, Sue Mingus (a co-producer of this film) and Celia Mingus Zaentz\, plus a variety of performers and past Mingus associates\, including Dannie Richmond and John Handy. The film concludes with the posthumous premiere of Mingus’ “Epitaph.” The title of this documentary is a reference to Mingus’ controversial autobiography\, “Beneath the Underdog.” Shown at the 1997 London Film Festival. \n[Free] \nMore info: http://artsandvenuesdenver.com/event/528663
