SUMMARY:What's in Your Gut?
DESCRIPTION:As you’re probably well aware\, there’s a lot going on in your gut\, but did you realize our intestines have a place in history? Jessica Metcalf\, assistant professor of animal sciences at Colorado State University\, uses microbes preserved in coprolites (ancient fecal material) to characterize the gut microbiome of ancient humans\, allowing her to map how our intestines have changed over time\, particularly in the recent past due to western practices\, such as widespread use of antibiotics\, high-fat diets\, and intense hygiene practices. Get up close and personal with these microscopic organisms\, and find out the implications Metcalf’s research has for human health. \n[$12 – $15] \nMore info and tickets: http://www.dmns.org/learn/adults/after-hours/whats-in-your-gut/

SUMMARY:Looking Forward: Demographic Change\, Economic Shifts\, and the Role of the Arts
DESCRIPTION:Looking Forward: Demographic Change\, Economic Shifts\, and the Role of the Arts\na conversation with Manuel Pastor \nDenver—like much of the metropolitan United States—is experiencing a combination of demographic and economic change. While increasing diversity is welcomed by many\, it is feared by others. These diverging views are playing out against a backdrop of growing income segregation and inequality\, which seeds economic despair\, increases tensions and isolates communities. and enjoyment. The arts can be an important tool to address these broader social dynamics – art can advance inclusivity and equity\, and promote community empowerment\, inter-group understanding and metropolitan prosperity. This speaker series will bring into focus how these dynamics are playing out in both Denver and across the United States\, and highlight how the arts can support community inclusion and advance organizations’ goals. This presentation will lift up how these dynamics are playing out in both Denver and the United States and highlight how a nation that is itself facing sharp generational\, and racial divisions—as well as proposals to eliminate national arts funding—can center equity as part of arts programming. \nDr. Manuel Pastor is Professor of Sociology and American Studies & Ethnicity at the University of Southern California. He currently directs the Program for Environmental and Regional Equity (PERE) at USC and USC’s Center for the Study of Immigrant Integration (CSII). Pastor holds an economics Ph.D. from the University of Massachusetts\, Amherst\, and is the inaugural holder of the Turpanjian Chair in Civil Society and Social Change at USC. \n[Free] \nMore info and Registration \nSchedule At-A-Glance\n8 a.m. — Check in: Coffee\, light breakfast\, and networking\n8:30 a.m. — Welcome and presentation\n10:00 a.m. — Q&A

SUMMARY:Inside the Orchestra: Tiny Tots
DESCRIPTION:Tiny Tots gets children truly “inside the orchestra” by seating the audience on the floor and surrounding them with our 30+ piece professional orchestra. The conductor faces the audience and talks directly to the kids throughout the performance\, asking questions and teaching them about the music as it is playing around them. \nDesigned for children six and under\, Tiny Tots is a 45-minute program that gives young ones the chance to interact with the conductor and the musicians and learn about the instruments in the process. Children are encouraged to respond to different elements of the music\, from thinking about how music makes them feel to getting on their feet and moving. They are treated to up-close-and-personal demos by various instruments\, introduced to musical concepts\, emotional understanding of the arts\, and artistic expression. The music selection\, design\, and scripting of Tiny Tots is geared to connect very young children with music – physically\, emotionally\, and mentally. Children are also encouraged to take a closer look at the instruments and ask questions of the musicians after the concert has concluded. Every Tiny Tots event includes guest performers from some of our cultural partner organizations. \nTiny Tots was named in Denver Westword’s “Best of Denver” 2017. The experience is one-of-a-kind! \n[Tiny Tots tickets are a suggested $9.95 for anyone over the age of 12 months. Discounts and financial consideration are available to those with financial hardship. If you need assistance\, please contact info@insidetheorchestra.org\, or by phone at 303-355-7855.] \nMore info: https://insidetheorchestra.org/tiny-tots-events/

SUMMARY:FIELD TRIP: Dikeou Collection
DESCRIPTION:Discover a hidden Denver gem! The Dikeou Collection is a Contemporary Art Collection in Downtown Denver that was established in 1998 by siblings\, Devon Dikeou and Pany Dikeou\, and features works by approximately 30 international artists. \nThis place is an experience. After entering the building at 1615 California\, one takes an old elevator up to the fifth floor and when the doors open it feels like you’re a world away from the busy energy of modern life that’s playing out on the 16th Street Mall below. Is this the 1940s? The 1930s? The retro style of the space is disarming and provides a fascinating counterbalance to the very fresh contemporary art\, which is displayed in a series of converted offices. \nOur exclusive Go Play Denver Field Trip to Dikeou will feature a guided tour with Hayley Richardson\, Director of the Dikeou Collection. \nThis Outing Is Best for: Teens and Adults \n[$9]
