DESCRIPTION:The Denver Museum of Nature & Science is pleased to partner with the International Institute for Indigenous Resource Management and the Denver American Indian Commission to present Indigenous Film\, a monthly indigenous film series. \nThe film will be screened at the Museum’s Phipps Theater. Doors open at 6 p.m.\, films begin at 6:30 p.m. Please use the IMAX Evening Entrance on the east side of the Museum. Admission is free. Concessions are available for purchase. \nWednesday\, November 8 \n6:30 p.m. \nFour Faces of the Moon and Ishi’s Return \nFour Faces of the Moon\, Director Amanda Strong (Michif/Cree/ Anishinaabe). This intricate stop-motion animation interlaces Canada’s colonial past with Strong’s personal history\, and illuminates Cree\, Métis\, and Anishinaabe reclamation of culture\, language\, and nationhood. In Cree and French with English subtitles. (Winnipeg Film Group\, 2016\, 13 min.). \nIshi’s Return\, Director Chris Eyre (Cheyenne/Arapaho). In 1911\, when Ishi emerged from the woods in Oroville\, California\, he became a national sensation known as “the last wild Indian.” Ishi’s story demonstrates the insidious power of purposeful forgetting. For a country determined to forget its treatment of American Indians\, it was expedient to promote the myth of “vanishing Indians” and relegate them permanently to the past. How\, then\, was it possible that 80 years after his death\, it was Ishi’s descendants who compelled the Smithsonian to repatriate his remains for a proper burial? The film travels an emotional path from Ishi’s first encounter with modern society\, the dehumanizing manner in which he was poked\, prodded and displayed\, to the triumph of his descendants who had the audacity to continue to exist. Johnson’s super 8 home movies provide a detailed look into Occult Toronto through a tour of Toronto’s psychic and occult shops\, while Guillen uses the media reports surrounding the disappearance of teenager Mariam Makhniashvili to examine a city left searching for answers after living in suspended hope for over two years. \nMark Loeser’s Sugar Beach uses several multiple exposures on a single roll of 35mm film to showcase Toronto’s favorite man-made\, faux beach directly across from the Redpath Sugar Refinery. In contrast to Sugar Beach\, a pseudo-beach where one can’t swim in the water and the sand doesn’t reach the sea\, Sara MacLean’s Fore-and-Aft was literally created in the Bay of Fundy in Nova Scotia using celluloid that was buried in the seabed and dragged through the ocean behind a boat. Tactile evidence of the repetition and changes wrought by the tidal cycles. \nFinally\, the sea plays a different function in Stephanie Comilang’s Lumapit Sa Akin\, Paraiso [Come to Me\, Paradise]. In the film\, the sea becomes an abstract space separating Filipina workers living in Hong Kong from their homeland. Similar to Herat in my Head\, Lumapit Sa Akin explores feelings of estranged nostalgia\, but within a different political situation\, that of poverty\, forced labor\, exploitation and human trafficking. Working against a harsh and unjust economic and political reality\, pockets of paradise are formed by communally gathering and temporarily transforming public space into private sanctuaries. The internet\, like the long-distance phone\, provide the utopian potential of a collective consciousness\, a way of bringing us together.
