SUMMARY:Photography Lecture: Danny Singer
DESCRIPTION:ANDERMAN PHOTOGRAPHY LECTURE SERIES: A CONVERSATION WITH DANNY SINGER \nCanadian photographer Danny Singer roams the North American prairie from Alberta and Saskatchewan south to the plains of Texas\, making pictures in the small towns most travelers overlook in their rush to get from one place to the next. The result is a series of what Singer calls “paper movies” that evoke the feeling of driving slowly down Main Street\, taking things in a little at a time. The slower one goes\, the more one sees. \nAt first glance\, the facades in Singer’s monumental prints look like sets for Western movies: abandoned\, frozen in time\, and silent but for the wind. He questions that notion of emptiness by revealing subtle\, living landscapes of quirky buildings and ordinary people going about their business. Every funny sign\, open door\, and child on a bicycle has unique significance in the life of the town. \nSinger’s work extends and amplifies the tradition of the photographic streetscape at the same time that it engages with paintings of the built environment by Edward Hopper\, Ed Ruscha\, and others. There is harsh beauty in the cold light of winter\, ease and simplicity in summer afternoons. Against backdrops of weather and space\, Singer weaves gentle stories about small-town life and the meaning of home. \nDoors open at 6:30 p.m. \nTickets are $5 for students\, $10 for Denver Art Museum members and CPAC members\, $15 for general admission. \nMore info and tickets: http://denverartmuseum.org/calendar/anderman-photography-lecture-series-conversation-danny-singer

SUMMARY:Women + Film: The Armor Of Light
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, February 24th at 7pm. Post-reception in Henderson’s Lounge. Director Abigail Disney will Skype in for a post-film Q&A! \nWhat price conscience? Abigail Disney’s directorial debut\, The Armor of light\, follows the journey of an Evangelical minister trying to find the courage to preach about the growing toll of gun violence in America. The film tracks Reverend Rob Schenck\, anti-abortion activist and fixture on the political far right\, who breaks with orthodoxy by questioning whether being pro-gun is consistent with being pro-life. Reverend Schenck is shocked and perplexed by the reactions of his long-time friends and colleagues who warn him away from this complex\, politically explosive issue. \nAlong the way\, Rev. Schenck meets Lucy McBath\, the mother of Jordan Davis\, an unarmed teenager who was murdered in Florida and whose story has cast a spotlight on “Stand Your Ground” laws. McBath\, also a Christian\, decides to work with Schenck even though she is pro-choice. Lucy is on a difficult journey of her own\, trying to make sense of her devastating loss while using her grief to effect some kind of viable and effective political action—where so many before her have failed. \nMore info and tickets: http://www.denverfilm.org/filmcenter/detail.aspx?id=28178

SUMMARY:Colorado Symphony - Learning to Hear Color
DESCRIPTION:In conjunction with an exhibition at the University of Denver’s Vicki Myhren Gallery called “Learning to See Color\,” explore the musical aspects of color. The Colorado Symphony will be joined by DU students Bailey Dunning and Travis Powell\, who are pursuing degrees in the Emergent Digital Practices Program of the School of Art. They will give a live performance of light and color\, interacting with the music. \nThe Colorado Symphony’s new assistant conductor Andres Lopera\, and DU Art Professor and color expert Jeffrey Keith\, will lead the program demonstrating that art created to be experienced through one sense\, such as music\, can actually lead to perceptions and feelings experienced through other senses – colors can be heard. \nThe program includes music by Holst\, Tchaikovsky\, Marquez\, Sibelius\, Shostakovich and Brahms. \nTickets: $29 – $39 \nMore info and tickets: http://ev9.evenue.net/cgi-bin/ncommerce3/SEGetEventList?groupCode=NCP&linkID=denver-newman&shopperContext=&caller=&appCode=

SUMMARY:Stompin’ Ground Games in Capitol Hill: Comedy!
DESCRIPTION:The Stompin’ Ground Games\, a monthly series brought to you by Warm Cookie of the Revolution\, comes to central Denver’s neighborhoods of Uptown\, Capitol Hill\, Congress Park\, Cheesman\, and West Colfax! \nThere are layers and layers of deep history on Capitol Hill. Since World War II\, this part of Denver has been home to a diverse array of political and cultural movements that grew into national prominence: from the Beats in the 50s\, shacking up in hotels off of Logan to queer activists in the 60s and 70s\, gathering in apartments to organize\, to 2015\, as immigrants and the faith community made a public stand over the U.S. government’s deportation policies. \nThey’ve challenged local comedy legends Timmi Lasley\, Jordan Dahl\, Nathan Lund\, and Janae Burris to shed light on these crucial issues while still (hopefully) making you pee your pants. \nThere will be delicious cookies\, Voodoo Donuts\, Sexy Pizza\, and a slew of groups present who have been working on homelessness\, immigration rights\, queer history\, and housing alternatives\, as well as local history\, weird games\, and ways you can get involved! \nA donation of $5 is requested\, but no one will be turned away due to lack of funds. \nMore info: Stompin’ Ground Games in Capitol Hill: Comedy!

SUMMARY:The Last Man on the Moon + Q&A with Former Astronaut Bruce McCandless
DESCRIPTION:Join special guest former astronaut Bruce McCandless for a post-screening Q&A on Saturday\, February 27th at 7pm. Bruce was a member of the Apollo program and flew 2 shuttle mission\, including one that launched the Hubble Space Telescope and made the world’s first untethered “space walks” using the Manned Maneuvering Unit\, which he helped design. In 2005 he was inducted into the Astronaut Hall of Fame. \nAbout “The Last Man on the Moon:” When Apollo astronaut Eugene Cernan stepped off the moon in 1972 he left his footprints and his daughter’s initials in the lunar dust. Only now\, over forty years later\, is he ready to share his epic but deeply personal story. Cernan’s burning ambition carried him to the spectacular and hazardous environment of space and to the moon. But there was a heavy price to pay for the fame and privilege that followed. As his wife famously remarked\, “If you think going to the moon is hard\, try staying at home.” The Last Man on the Moon combines rare archive material\, compelling Visual FX and unprecedented access to present an iconic historical character on the big screen. \nMore info and tickets: http://www.denverfilm.org/filmcenter/detail.aspx?id=28156

SUMMARY:10 Myths on the Proper Application of Beauty Products
DESCRIPTION:10 Myths on the Proper Application of Beauty Products\, the first full-length show of Buntport’s 15th Season\, could be called an adaptation of local author Miriam Suzanne’s novel Riding SideSaddle*. However\, it is more like a supplement to the novel\, which is printed on 250 interchangeable index cards and is an “open source” text\, meant to be added to\, adapted\, morphed into something new. \nFollowing a group of friends that resist order\, category and completion\, this play weaves myth and storytelling with every day rituals. It is about people deeply in love\, suffering loss\, celebrating strangeness\, all while they pluck their eyebrows. It is about the Greek myth of Salmacis and Hermaphroditus\, who are merged into “one being of both sexes” and about what we see when we look in the mirror. Oh\, and the whole thing is underscored by a band standing in the bathtub. \nTickets: $13 – $16; $20 on opening (3/4) and closing (3/26) nights \nPay-What-You-Can Nights: THU 3/10\, MON 3/21 \nMore info and reservations: http://www.buntport.com/archive/archive.htm

SUMMARY:Penny Saturday at MCA
DESCRIPTION:That’s right\, admission is only 1 penny on the first Saturday of the month at the Museum of Contemporary Art. Grab some pennies\, call your pals and go see some art! \nMore about MCA: http://mcadenver.org \nOn View until July 3rd: \nBrian Bress: Make Your Own Friends surveys the last ten years of the artist’s practice\, bringing together video\, sculpture\, and works on paper for the first time. The works on view highlight the artist’s unique process that migrates from two dimensions to three and back again. Bress’s imaginative characters are born as doodles or collages\, take shape as sculptural costumes\, and come to life on video\, as they are performed in front of elaborately composed backdrops. Connecting the past with the present\, Bress’s “friends” imaginatively breach disciplinary distinctions amongst painting\, drawing\, sculpture\, performance\, and video. \nArne Svenson: The Neighbors After receiving a bird watching\, telephoto lens from a friend\, Arne Svenson set up a tripod to capture what unfolded within a brand new\, glass-and-steel high-rise building across the street from his Tribeca studio. Capturing the lives of his neighbors (their habits\, activities\, tastes) over the course of a year\, Svenson also used the geometry of the buildings’ windows as his frame\, creating various tableaux of domestic life unfolding. Presenting over 20 photographs from this series\, The Neighbors\, this exhibition explores in depth the central issues raised by these enigmatic works: voyeurism\, the increasingly imperceptible boundaries between privacy and the public\, and the ubiquity of the camera in our surveillance-obsessed world. Documentation of a court case brought against the artist (which he successfully appealed\, twice) will enrich this discussion\, as the works point up a tension between the luxury of looking out and the vulnerability of being looked upon. \nLaura Shill: Phantom Touch For her first solo museum exhibition\, Denver-based Laura Shill will create a new installation that features reclaimed materials in richly mannered\, densely layered environments and which plays with the space as a site of disclosure and concealment. It will also include many of her Absent Lovers series in which the artist appropriates images from covers of Harlequin romance novels to create hauntingly beautiful cyanotypes. These works often reveal a violent\, sinister\, and sexualized dynamic latent in the clichéd depictions of lovers from these stories. \nOn View Until June 5th: \nCritical Focus: Lanny DeVuono Lanny DeVuono has been exploring outer space for the past year. Her ambition to illustrate extraterrestrial terrain\, as she imagines it\, led to the large-scale drawings on canvas on view in Critical Focus: Lanny DeVuono. The works that comprise Here and Elsewhere\, the artist’s most recent series of conceptual landscapes\, synthesize DeVuono’s curiosity about\, and critique of\, space travel\, the influence of American Western landscapes on her practice\, and her continuing dedication to materials. The images are at once familiar and foreign\, surreal and\, in some cases\, almost entirely abstract. Runs through June 5.

SUMMARY:10 Myths on the Proper Application of Beauty Products
DESCRIPTION:10 Myths on the Proper Application of Beauty Products\, the first full-length show of Buntport’s 15th Season\, could be called an adaptation of local author Miriam Suzanne’s novel Riding SideSaddle.
