SUMMARY:Screen Play Art Opening Party
DESCRIPTION:Join the MCA Teens for an exhibition opening from 6-8PM with free food and drinks! \nMCA Denver’s Teen Program: Failure Lab worked closely with artist Shayna Cohn in an intensive eight-week workshop to create an installation that manifests the physicality of the digital image through a playful\, humorous\, and crude material interpretation. \nThe screen has captivated us with its luminous surface and imagined tactility. Fractured and incongruent imagery is recombined into an immersive environment where the gaze is shifted from the flatness of the screen to a curved and sensational scene. Transcending its boundaries as a moving image\, the video becomes sculptural; it’s caught on shiny\, slippery\, and flickering surfaces\, simulating the infinite yet shallow expanse of the screen. \nVideo content is appropriated from the public domain and then merged with content created uniquely by each Failure Lab teen. The ambiguous relationship between the found and created reflects the contemporary notion of consumption as authorship. Below the hyper-connected continuum of “sharing” is a deeply profound expression of community\, style\, and identity. \nFree admission for youth under 18 (as always at the MCA); $5 after 5p for others \nMore info: https://www.facebook.com/events/1062450200484364

SUMMARY:Penny Saturday at MCA
DESCRIPTION:That’s right\, admission is only 1 penny on the first Saturday of the month at the Museum of Contemporary Art. Grab some pennies\, call your pals and go see some art! \nMore about MCA: http://mcadenver.org \nOn view:\nBrian Bress: Make Your Own Friends surveys the last ten years of the artist’s practice\, bringing together video\, sculpture\, and works on paper for the first time. The works on view highlight the artist’s unique process that migrates from two dimensions to three and back again. Bress’s imaginative characters are born as doodles or collages\, take shape as sculptural costumes\, and come to life on video\, as they are performed in front of elaborately composed backdrops. Connecting the past with the present\, Bress’s “friends” imaginatively breach disciplinary distinctions amongst painting\, drawing\, sculpture\, performance\, and video. \nArne Svenson: The Neighbors After receiving a bird watching\, telephoto lens from a friend\, Arne Svenson set up a tripod to capture what unfolded within a brand new\, glass-and-steel high-rise building across the street from his Tribeca studio. Capturing the lives of his neighbors (their habits\, activities\, tastes) over the course of a year\, Svenson also used the geometry of the buildings’ windows as his frame\, creating various tableaux of domestic life unfolding. Presenting over 20 photographs from this series\, The Neighbors\, this exhibition explores in depth the central issues raised by these enigmatic works: voyeurism\, the increasingly imperceptible boundaries between privacy and the public\, and the ubiquity of the camera in our surveillance-obsessed world. Documentation of a court case brought against the artist (which he successfully appealed\, twice) will enrich this discussion\, as the works point up a tension between the luxury of looking out and the vulnerability of being looked upon. \nLaura Shill: Phantom Touch For her first solo museum exhibition\, Denver-based Laura Shill will create a new installation that features reclaimed materials in richly mannered\, densely layered environments and which plays with the space as a site of disclosure and concealment. It will also include many of her Absent Lovers series in which the artist appropriates images from covers of Harlequin romance novels to create hauntingly beautiful cyanotypes. These works often reveal a violent\, sinister\, and sexualized dynamic latent in the clichéd depictions of lovers from these stories. \nCritical Focus: Lanny DeVuono Lanny DeVuono has been exploring outer space for the past year. Her ambition to illustrate extraterrestrial terrain\, as she imagines it\, led to the large-scale drawings on canvas on view in Critical Focus: Lanny DeVuono. The works that comprise Here and Elsewhere\, the artist’s most recent series of conceptual landscapes\, synthesize DeVuono’s curiosity about\, and critique of\, space travel\, the influence of American Western landscapes on her practice\, and her continuing dedication to materials. The images are at once familiar and foreign\, surreal and\, in some cases\, almost entirely abstract. Runs through June 5.

SUMMARY:The People Vs. VOTING
DESCRIPTION:Warm Cookies of the Revolution’s The People Vs. _______ is back and this time\, VOTING is on trial! \nWe the People have put Police\, God\, Children\, and Retirement on trial and now we’re challenging the most interesting minds in our community to prosecute or defend: VOTING \n“Voting is our civic duty.” “Voting changes nothing.” “Voting is strategic.” “Voting is mindless.” “If you don’t vote\, you can’t complain.” “Voting is the opiate of the masses.” \nWhere do YOU stand? Come hear the prosecution and defense\, take part in the audience rebuttal\, and then we’ll decide who won by…um….well\, we’ll figure it out! \nProsecuting:\nAnthony Grimes: Anthony is a pastor and activist. He founded the Denver Freedom Riders and is Director of Campaigns and Strategy at the Fellowship of Reconciliation. He creatively defended the police at our last People’s Vs ____ and we expect a full on assault of Voting this time around. \nDenise Maes: Denise is Public Policy Director at the ACLU of Colorado. She worked in the White House. Needless to say\, she knows what’s up with voting and with trials. \nAaron Goldhamer: By day\, Aaron is a lawyer. By night\, he’s currently running for political office in Colorado\, so get ready for some cognitive dissonance and some verbal fire. \nJice Johnson: Jice is a businesswoman\, director of the Black Business Initiative\, and helps run Shop Talk Live here in Denver. Voting might not stand a chance after she’s done with it. \nDefending:\nJeanette Vizguerra: Jeanette is one of our Reconstructionists in the community and has been a fighter for Justice for Janitors and Immigration reform. See her take on the efficacy of Voting. \nCandi CdeBaca: Holy smokes\, Candi doesn’t mess around! Whether it’s founding and running Project VOYCE or her Elyria-Swansea neighborhood association\, when she defends\, she does it with power. Voting has a friend in Candi. \nMorgan Hartley: Morgan’s experience is with elections and when he saw we were doing this he simply said\, “I want in.” Your wish is our command Morgan. Defend away. \nJoe Szuszwalak: Joe is a superhero with Denver Elections. That’s right: when voting is in trouble\, it’s “Super Szuswalak” to the rescue! \nWarm Cookies events are always free ($5 suggested donation) \nInterpretation and Childcare available (please let them know if you plan on utilizing childcare)\n \nMore info: https://www.facebook.com/events/589468224551933/

SUMMARY:Tattered Cover Film Series: Mystery Train
DESCRIPTION:Join the Tattered Cover Book Store\, UCD’s College of Arts & Media\, KUNC 91.5\, and the Sie FilmCenter (in the Lowenstein CulturePlex\, next door to the Tattered Cover Colfax Avenue) for an exploration of the world of classic movies\, hosted by film critic Howie Movshovitz. All programs begin at 1:00 pm. Tickets are $1.00\, and are available one hour before the screening from the box office. Parking is available in the parking lot off of Elizabeth or Columbine Streets. \nAbout the Film: Three stories—all involve music and people—unspool in Memphis. It’s eccentric\, like all good Jim Jarmusch films\, and unexpected elements come together\, as in all good Jim Jarmusch films. This one also has the strange and haunting Screamin’ Jay Hawkins somehow at the center of things— along with the unseen Elvis Presley\, of course. Shot with rich unease by the great Robby Müller. (110 minutes) \nSee all the films in this series: http://www.tatteredcover.com/sites/tatteredcover.com/files/cinema%20flyer_2.pdf
