SUMMARY:Welcome to the Dahl House: Matilda
DESCRIPTION:USA\, 1996\, 102 Minute Running Time \nSaturday\, June 11th.\n$5 all guests. 6 and under are FREE.\nAdmission includes FREE Cereal Bar!\nCereal bar begins at 10am\, film begins at 10:30am \nBased on the book Matilda\, by British children’s author Roald Dahl\, this film moves the setting from the U.K. to the U.S.; otherwise it follows the original closely. Matilda Wormwood (Mara Wilson) is an extremely curious and intelligent little girl who is very different from her low-brow\, mainstream parents (Danny DeVito and real-life wife Rhea Perlman)\, who quite cruelly ignore her. As she grows older\, she begins to discover that she has telekinetic powers. Not until a teacher shows her kindness for the first time does she realize that she can use those powers to do something about her sufferings and help her friends as well. Villains from the awful Miss Trunchbull (Pam Ferris)\, headmistress of her miserable school Crunchem Hall\, to her parents and older brother begin to feel her ire. Look for Paul Reubens (aka Pee Wee Herman) in a small part as an FBI agent investigating Matilda’s shady father. \nMore info and tickets: http://www.denverfilm.org/filmcenter/detail.aspx?id=28422

SUMMARY:B-Side Thursdays: Mirror Fears & Church Fire
DESCRIPTION:B-Side Thursdays is a rooftop summer music series at the Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA) focused on presenting the best up and coming colorado bands + side projects of well known Denver bands and musicians. \nMusic 6p-8p\nMembers always FREE | Non-Members $5 admission after 5p; youth under 18 always free\nAll ages. Come early\, capacity limited. \nMore info: http://mcadenver.org/bsidemusic2016.php \nMirror Fears\nMirror Fears is dark\, dreamy\, richly melodic\, fun\, weird\, and harsh. Kate began recording 4-tracks and teaching herself how to use music software at around age 20. As several bands formed and dissolved in the next few years\, complete control over her own music became increasingly more appealing. She released her first self-titled EP as Mirror Fears in late 2010\, and was just beginning to play out when she met the friends who would become the band Talk All Night. Since 2011\, Kate has been enjoying partitioning her time between the two projects. The first full-length Mirror Fears album was finished as new years struck 2012\, and following years would bear witness to many performances both in and out of Colorado\, multiple releases\, and collaboration with artists such as Hollow Press\, Time\, Doctype\, Dangerous Nonsense\, and Curta. Lyrically\, Mirror Fears explores gender binary deconstruction\, the freedom of queerness\, Catholic guilt\, the contradictory nature of capitalism\, the absurdity of self-consciousness\, desire\, the power of names\, and other stuff like scratched CDs\, sniper rifles\, and bugs. Musically\, Mirror Fears is all of the lushness and vibrance of 90’s dark wave combined with modernized industrial IDM electronica. \nChurch fire\nDavid Samuelson and Shannon Webber form the creative power behind Denver’s “majestic\, witchy\, up-to-no-good” electronic noisepop duo church fire. Webber’s strange\, twitchy and ravishing vocals have complimented Samuelson’s artful darkwave compositions since the group formed in 2012. Sculpted from a sense of balance in opposites – light and dark\, soft but aggressive and a spiritual reclamation of the divine feminine – church fire’s fantastical visual and aural creations consistently deliver a live performance like no other.

SUMMARY:Cherry Blossom Festival
DESCRIPTION:Fans of taikō drumming\, teriyaki chicken\, and vintage Japanese textiles won’t want to miss this year’s Cherry Blossom Festival (in Japanese\, Sakura Matsuri). \nHeld each year since 1972\, the festival celebrates the Japanese American (JA) heritage and culture of Front Range residents through live entertainment\, food and drink\, arts and crafts\, and informative exhibits and demonstrations. \nAmong the entertainment will be Denver Taiko\, whose rousing drum performances have in past years drawn the festival’s biggest crowds\, as well as performances of Japanese dance\, koto and shamisen\, and martial arts. Inside the Tri-State/Denver Buddhist Temple\, attendees will find exhibits of ikebana (flower arrangement) and bonsai\, and informative lectures on Buddhism. The temple’s gymnasium is home to a variety of food and drink\, including the popular teriyaki chicken dinner plate\, sushi\, and delicious Japanese sweets called manju and mochi. Volunteers will be pouring complementary hot green tea\, but if that’s too much heat on a warm summer day\, head to one of our two beer gardens for a cold glass and a refreshing bowl of chilled somen (noodles). Be sure to try the special Sakura Matsuri craft brew made by our neighbor\, Jagged Mountain Brewery. If sake is more to your liking\, try Portland-based Sake One’s offerings. \nFree entry and fun for people of all ages. \nSAT 6/18 – 11a – 6p\nSUN 6/19 – 11a – 4p \nMore info: http://cherryblossomdenver.org
