Join us for a fun night filled with a good ole’ dose of inspiration and hang around for a beer\, wine\, and a chat afterward too. \n[Free; includes beer from Ratio Beerworks for those over 21] \nRegister: https://generalassemb.ly/education/nothing-ventured-nothing-gained-how-to-get-where-you-want-to-go/denver/45081 \nMore about this quarter’s speakers: \n\n\nScott Bennett\, Founder & CEO\,\nHousefish Design \nScott followed a love of auto racing to a degree in Automotive Engineering from England’s Loughborough University. This led to work designing cars that won the Indy 500 and Indycar championship\, as well as the design of racing shock absorbers\, vehicle dynamics simulation software\, data acquisition and telemetry\, Baja off-road trophy trucks\, and composite aircraft. In 2002\, he helped a new Indycar manufacturer setup a state of the art manufacturing facility incorporating carbon fiber autoclaves\, rapid prototyping\, and 3 and 5 axis machining\, all while simultaneously designing a car under near-impossible time constraints. And then did it all again in 2009 with a new US-based Formula 1 team. \nAlong the way\, an interest in furniture design led to the founding of Housefish\, a Denver-based furniture design and manufacturing studio dedicated to combining advanced manufacturing techniques and careful hand craft to produce innovative\, evocative\, environmentally responsible furniture in the US. \nScott also cofounded Westwood Design\, an influential juvenile furniture manufacturer\, and has done design work for several major furniture manufacturers. \nScott’s work has been exhibited at ICFF in New York\, Ventura Lambrate in Milan\, is in the permanent collection of the Denver Art Museum\, and has been featured in countless print and internet publications. \n\n\n\nStephanie Frances\, Founder and Executive Director\,\nProdigy Ventures \nStephanie Frances is Founder and Executive Director of Prodigy Ventures. Her experience includes: Ten years career development and WIA case management experience working with low-income youth and disabled adults with multiple barriers to accessing traditional labor market. Three years managing team of Youth Career Development Facilitators in Denver Public Schools. Led curriculum re-design process for Goodwill’s Youth Career Development Program. Lead for Summer Youth Employment Program and Bridges to Work Professional Internship program as contractor for City and County of Denver. Master’s Nonprofit Management from Regis University. \n\n\n\nPatricia Tolentino\, Founder\,\nStories Not Forgotten \nPatricia Tolentino\, or Trish or Patty T to her friends and family\, is an adventurer and enthusiastic traveler\, storyteller and artist. A native Oklahoman\, she brings nearly two decades of media experience and creativity to every project. Trish attended Webster University in St. Louis\, Missouri\, then branched out into broadcast production and editing at the local PBS station. Experienced in many video formats\, she’s created training and outreach videos for the Department of Veterans Affairs\, highlights and fast-paced replays for Fox Sports Midwest\, as well as media featuring personal stories\, events\, marketing\, and much more.\nTrish is a lover of Texas Hold ‘Em\, bourbon tastings\, and the outdoors. A seasoned triathlete\, she completed a full Ironman in 2014 and is enjoying the Colorado outdoors lifestyle since her move in 2015. \nIn 2016\, she took the leap into entrepreneurship by starting Stories Not Forgotten – a video production service to help families preserve their stories and history for future generations. \n\n\n\nGeraldine Kim & Joshua Gertzen\, Founding Owners\,\nFrozen Matter \nGerry and Josh are the founding owners of Frozen Matter\, a dairy plant and frozen dessert parlor in Uptown Denver\, and Retrograde\, a craft cocktail lounge located in the “walk-in freezer” of Frozen Matter. Having lived in San Francisco before Denver\, Gerry was spoiled with some amazing ice creams. When a lawyering job moved Gerry to Denver\, she found herself in a city with a gap in craft ice cream offerings. Having developed a serious side passion in dessert making\, she knew should could do something about it. Through a mutual friend\, she met Josh who had moved to Denver for a job at a software consulting firm. They hit it off\, ate a lot of ice cream together and started dreaming of a sweeter life—one full of ice cream and happy people\, creativity and working with their hands\, a life in which\, as business owners\, they could have greater control. With Josh’s side interest in space science\, general geekery and ability to build anything (growing up in Alaska\, he and his Dad built their house) combining with Gerry’s culinary interest\, the Frozen Matter cow-to-cone concept was born. In the full spirit of great escapes\, the Retrograde concept was born shortly thereafter. Josh and Gerry dropped out of their desk jobs and opened Frozen Matter and Retrograde in 2016. With a lot of sweat and luck\, Gerry and Josh have been named Rising Stars for Frozen Matter by StarChefs\, Retrograde was named Bar of the Year in 2016 by EaterDenver readers and 2017 Top of Town Cocktail Menu in 2017 by 5280 Magazine. \nBefore finding themselves in a world of rainbow sprinkles\, Josh was a software engineer with eighteen years of experience in process automation\, website development and online marketing. In addition\, he founded various technology start-ups and managed several software development teams. Gerry was a regulatory attorney\, representing the California Public Utilities Commission and then Xcel Energy. She graduated from the University of Southern California with studies focused on art history and economics and the Santa Clara University of Law. Josh and Gerry are both graduates of the 123rd class of the Penn State Ice Cream Program\, the oldest ice cream school in the world (yes\, you can study ice cream). \n\n\n\nJason zumBrunnen\, Co-Founder & Brewmaster \,\nRatio Beer Works \nJason zumBrunnen is the co-founder and Brewmaster at Ratio Beerworks in Denver\, CO. He is a Colorado native and a CU Boulder graduate in Chemical Engineering. He also attended brewing school in Chicago at the Siebel Institute as well as Doemen’s Academy in Munich\, Germany. Upon moving to Denver\, he became an award-winning brewer at Wynkoop and AC Golden before forming Ratio Beerworks in February of 2015 at 2920 Larimer St in the RiNo Art District of Denver. \nBefore starting Ratio\, Jason tried his hand at many unusual jobs\, including working at Cirque du Soleil (NOT as an acrobat!)\, working at film studios in LA\, selling plastic\, and touring the world singing and playing guitar in a punk rock band. He lives in the Five Points neighborhood of Denver with his wife\, son\, and mini-schnauzer\, Levi Honkytonk.

SUMMARY:Move Closer: Looking at Chinese Painting
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever wondered why you like some works of art\, while others don’t grab you in quite the same way? Are you curious about what exactly it is you are looking at or for? \nJoin museum educators and art historians in single lecture sessions designed to inspire close looking and conversation around works of art. Topics vary\, from exploring artistic techniques and mediums to making yourself at home with abstract art\, and participants will leave with a keen eye for detail\, a new set of looking tools\, and an expanded ability to connect with many types of art at the Denver Art Museum (and beyond). \nWhat does it mean when a Chinese painting copies an earlier dynastic style? Is it an act of nostalgia\, respect or a creative devolution? \nArt historian and critic Kealey Boyd will discuss the shared visual thinking of ancient Chinese calligraphy with Song and Yuan painting. \nParticipants will gain a better understanding of compositional choices and painting techniques that influenced artists for centuries and became transnational. \nDoors open at 2 pm \n[Members $18\, nonmembers $23] \nMore info: https://denverartmuseum.org/calendar/move-closer-looking-chinese-painting

SUMMARY:Artist Panel: Painting/Non-Painting
DESCRIPTION:Over the course of the last century\, artists have challenged notions of what a painting can be. As long ago as 1910\, Picasso added newspaper clippings and things like contact paper and rope to his canvases while by mid-century Pop Artists like Robert Rauschenberg and Andy Warhol incorporated photographic techniques into their processes\, blurring painting’s boundaries even more. Join artists Stephen Batura\, Terry Maker\, and Sarah McKenzie to see how the act of painting (and near-painting) continues to be redefined in the present day. This panel will also consider if and how the intentions of Clyfford Still and his fellow abstract expressionists hold relevance for this continually evolving medium. \n[Free; registration required] \nMore info: https://clyffordstillmuseum.org/event/artist-panel-paintingnon-painting/

SUMMARY:Opening: Making Art / Making Community
DESCRIPTION:Artists are problem solvers and thinkers- imagining alternative realities and solutions for living. This exhibition looks at artists using social bridging strategies in their artmaking through participatory experiments\, humorous social critiques\, and collaborative craft. These artists pull tactics from social science\, psychology\, education and design thinking. Referred to as “social practice” or “relational aesthetics” these artists use human relations as their artistic medium rather than a traditional independent creative practice. \nMarch 8th-April 29th\, 2018 \n[Free] \nMore info: http://vicki-myhren-gallery.du.edu

SUMMARY:Film Noir & Early Hollywood: Double Indemnity
DESCRIPTION:In this classic film noir\, insurance salesman Walter Neff (Fred MacMurray) gets roped into a murderous scheme when he falls for the sensual Phyllis Dietrichson (Barbara Stanwyck)\, who is intent on killing her husband (Tom Powers) and living off the fraudulent accidental death claim. Prompted by the late Mr. Dietrichson’s daughter\, Lola (Jean Heather)\, insurance investigator Barton Keyes (Edward G. Robinson) looks into the case\, and gradually begins to uncover the sinister truth. \nIn the 1940s\, film studios introduced an entirely new film genre to American audiences. Filled with murder\, corruption and despair\, and populated with detectives and femme fatales\, the films that came to be defined as Film Noir grew into enduring and iconic classics. Today\, these hard-boiled tales are just as fascinating and entertaining as when they first premiered more than a half-century ago.\nThe Denver Film Society is excited to present a collection of some of the best American noir classics\, kicking off with the film that many suggest marked the genre’s end point (Touch of Evil) and working backward to showcase hallmarks of the form (The Big Sleep and Double Indemnity). The films\, featuring career-defining roles by some of Hollywood’s biggest stars\, including: Lauren Bacall\, Orson Welles\, Humphrey Bogart\, Barbara Stanwyck\, Janet Leigh\, and Edward G. Robinson\, are cinematic treats\, not to be missed on the big screen.\nAlong with these monthly screenings\, DFS will also present a series of lectures by local film scholars that provide additional context and insights into the early American cinema. Lectures include an introduction to film noir\, its history\, impact and influences; a discussion about how Hollywood helped shape attitudes about the female body; and a presentation on the history of censorship and the Hays code in Hollywood. All screenings and lectures in this series take place at the Sie FilmCenter and are free for members\, and just $7 for non-members. \n[$7; Free for DFS Members] \nMore info: https://secure.denverfilm.org/tickets/film.aspx?id=30014&FID=100

SUMMARY:Meet Malcolm X
DESCRIPTION:Malcolm X (1925 – 1965)\, born Malcolm Little\, was a Black Muslim minister and National Spokesman for the Nation of Islam.  After rising from an early life of drug abuse and petty criminal behavior\, this respected yet controversial political figure confronts a personal moral crisis:  his own human bigotry.  His driving quest for knowledge\, self-critique and conversion to Islam changes this ex-convict into an internationally revered\, though still controversial\, spokesman for the cause of universal human rights. \nColorado Humanities is pleased to offer as part of our Black History Live Tour 2018 a portrayal of Malcolm X by eminent national humanities and Chautauqua scholar Charles Everett Pace.  This portrayal will show how marginal outsiders become influential insiders.  Participants have a unique opportunity to talk with Malcolm X and with Charles Everett Pace. \n[Free] \nMore info: http://www.coloradohumanities.org/content/black-history-live-2

SUMMARY:Tiny Tots
DESCRIPTION:Tiny Tots gets children truly “inside the orchestra” by seating the audience on the floor and surrounding them with a 30+ piece professional orchestra. \nDesigned for children six and under\, Tiny Tots is a 45-minute program that gives young ones the chance to interact with the conductor and the musicians and learn about the instruments in the process. Children are encouraged to respond to different elements of the music\, from thinking about how music makes them feel to getting on their feet and moving. They are treated to up-close-and-personal demos by various instruments\, introduced to musical concepts\, emotional understanding of the arts\, and artistic expression. The music selection\, design\, and scripting of Tiny Tots is geared to connect very young children with music – physically\, emotionally\, and mentally. Children are also encouraged to take a closer look at the instruments and ask questions of the musicians after the concert has concluded. Every Tiny Tots event includes guest performers from some of our cultural partner organizations. \nAdditional perks for this date/location: Coinciding with the grand opening of Neighborhood Music at Stanley Marketplace\, visitors can enjoy free lessons\, pop-up performances and flash mobs throughout the day on 2/24.
