SUMMARY:The Price of Peace
DESCRIPTION:Denver had proclaimed the second Monday of October Indigenous People’s Day. \nJoin History Colorado for a special film screening as part of the 13th annual Indigenous Film & Arts Festival. The Price of Peace (director Kim Webby) presents a well-rounded profile of Tame Iti – a man of peace\, a loving father and grandfather\, a kaumatua (elder) of his Ngāi Tūhoe tribe\, an artist\, performer\, and activist who has spent his life advocating for Māori rights. Tame’s life changed forever on October 15\, 2007.  In the dead of night\, heavily armed police in military style uniform raided his home and the homes of many more people in what became known as the infamous “terror raids.” For the next six years he fought to clear his name and the name of his Tūhoe people. This documentary follows Tame through the court system\, through his jail sentence\, and is with him on his return home. (Conbrio Media\, Ltd.\, 2015\, 82 min.). \nWelcome by Patricia Limerick\, State Historian. \nPost-screening Q&A by Morris Te Whiti Love. \nMore info: http://www.historycolorado.org/event/price-peace \n[Free\, $5 suggested donation]

SUMMARY:Food Lover's Book Club: Mushrooms
DESCRIPTION:Morels\, chanterelles\, matsutakes\, and other hard-to-come-by mushrooms have an almost mythical quality to them. Their ethereal nature—and the thrill of searching for them—is what propels Pete Marczyk of Marczyk Fine Foods deep into the woods each foraging season. He’ll join 5280’s Food Editor Amanda M. Faison to discuss foraging\, technique\, etiquette\, and the community surrounding mushroom hunting. The chosen book\, The Mushroom Hunters: On The Trail of an Underground America by Langdon Cook\, details the fascinating and sometimes shadowy underground world of the professional mushroom hunter. SUMMARY:Riverside Cemetery Moonlight History & Mystery Tour
DESCRIPTION:Learn more about life in Denver through its famous dead on the Riverside Cemetery Moonlight History & Mystery Tour. The tour will touch on the turmoil and triumphs of early Queen City families like the Tabors\, as well as such political powerhouses as former slave and Colorado pioneer Clara Brown. \nAn October tradition\, these moonlit excursions focus on secret history\, not scares. Wear warm clothes\, but don’t dress in costume (people might be visiting their loved ones). \nThe first tour starts at 4:30 p.m. and the last takes off at 7:30; each runs between 90 and 120 minutes. \nMultiple tour dates: 10/14\, 10/15\, 10/21\, 10/22\, 10/28 and 10/29 \nMore info and tickets: http://fairmount-cemetery.com/tours/ \n[$20] \nMore about Riverside: \nHistoric Riverside Cemetery dates back to 1876 and holds the distinction of being Denver’s Pioneer Cemetery and oldest operating cemetery. \nRiverside is a reflection of the cultural diversity of the early settlers and is the final resting place of many of Colorado’s most notable citizens including Clara Brown\, Augusta Tabor\, Miguel Otero\, Barney and Julia Ford\, Cpt. Silas Soule and Gov. John Evans\, as well as 1\,200 Civil War veterans and three Medal of Honor recipients. \nDesignated a National Historic District in 1994\, Riverside was brought into the Fairmount family in the early 1900s and is the city’s oldest operating cemetery. Stroll through Riverside and you’ll find unique sculptures in granite\, marble\, limestone and bronze standing as guardians of Colorado’s history. Among the collection of irreplaceable funerary art is a rare zinc soldier monument\, part of the largest known collection of zinc monuments in North America.

SUMMARY:By River & Industry: A Walking Tour de Danse
DESCRIPTION:In this dynamic outdoor performance\, the audience walks to locations where dancers of diverse backgrounds and styles present contrasts of river and city: Denver’s boom-bust personality\, rich and poor\, nature and industry\, serenity and struggle. \nThe program also draws inspiration from the 40th anniversary of “By River and Wharf\,” a 1976 outdoor dance performance in London. In that project\, organized by X6 Dance Space\, Maedée Duprès performed as a collective member\, a company member and as a soloist with many friends and colleagues near the Tower bridge and the Wharf district in London. \nHere in Denver\, “By River and Industry” starts at a living arts centre\, 2231 S. Platte River Drive. From there\, a walking tour of the neighborhood is the stage on which modern dance offers a unique view of Denver’s roots and character. \nDancers: Maedée Duprès & Dancers\, Mary Lynn Lewark’s Projekt Move\, Angela Marquez and Maggie Chapman’s Avatar Movement Dance Company\, Chris Harris’ Colorado Youth Dance Theatre and Whitney Waugh Dance \nAfter the performance\, a symbolic walk brings performers and audience back into the centre for refreshments and lively conversations. Pat Isaacs will show her new artwork at the reception studio. \nMore info and tickets: http://alivingartscentre.com/special-dance-performance/ \n[$25]

SUMMARY:Denver's Anti-Chinese Riot and American Politics
DESCRIPTION:Gilded Age Denver was a boomtown. And\, it was a powder keg waiting to explode. The Anti-Chinese Riot of 1880 was sparked by resentment of the Chinese immigrants who’d crossed the Pacific and journeyed overland in response to an expanding labor market. Happening just two days before a national election\, it decisively undercut the nation’s promise of equal rights after the Civil War—and had repercussions well into the next century. Join Dr. Liping Zhu of Eastern Washington University\, author of The Road to Chinese Exclusion\, as he relates how mobs ransacked Denver’s Chinatown while other citizens took pains to protect their Asian neighbors. \nMore info and tickets: http://www.historycolorado.org/event/denvers-anti-chinese-riot-and-american-politics \n[$8.50 for HC members; $6.50 students; $16 for nonmembers with History Colorado Center admission; $10 for nonmembers for lecture only]

SUMMARY:The Great Debate
DESCRIPTION:Buntport Theater’s “The Great Debate” pits teams of non-experts head-to-head\, toe-to-toe\, and often dumb-and-dumber in lively debates of the inconsequential. Mundane topics are brought to life by ordinary\, but opinionated folks. You’re bound to be a flip-flopper after listening to compelling arguments on things that never mattered. New topics every month! \nAbout this month’s installment: “We feel as though 2016 really forced us to grow up. We think you’ll be impressed with the level of our maturity when you find out that the debate topic is: Pu-pu platters vs Lake Titicaca \nBoom. We’re adulting like crazy. \nMake a reservation now so you can hear compelling arguments from our panel of experts: Hannah Duggan\, Brian Colonna\, Kim Kutt\, Roger Norquist\, Mike Marlow\, Laura Jo Trexler\, Rachel Weeks\, and Eryc Eyl.” \n[$7 online ($6-$8 at the door)] \nMore info and tickets: http://buntport.com/2016/09/third-tuesdays/
