SUMMARY:Art Lecture: Curator's Circle: Portrait of Toyotomi Hideyoshi
DESCRIPTION:Focusing on the commemorative function of Japanese portraits\, this lecture explores the great warlord Toyotomi Hideyoshi (1537-98). The portrait of Hideyoshi at the Asian Art Museum is important and rare both as a work of art and as an invaluable document\, as it contains the inscription\, the date\, and the names of those who commissioned and inscribed it. Scholars have\, in the main\, overlooked the subject of Japanese portraits. Yuki Morishima\, Assistant Curator at Asian Art Museum of San Francisco\, leads us into this fascinating world. \nLecture will be followed by a reception and chance to meet the speaker. \nDoors open at 6 pm. Lecture will take place in the Hamilton Build on the Lower Level. \nProgram is free but reservations are requested. Reservations will be accepted beginning Dec. 31. \nFor details\, email Blittle@denverartmuseum.org or call 720-913-0040. \nMore info: http://denverartmuseum.org/calendar/curators-circle-portrait-toyotomi-hideyoshi

SUMMARY:10 Myths on the Proper Application of Beauty Products
DESCRIPTION:10 Myths on the Proper Application of Beauty Products\, the first full-length show of Buntport’s 15th Season\, could be called an adaptation of local author Miriam Suzanne’s novel Riding SideSaddle. However\, it is more like a supplement to the novel\, which is printed on 250 interchangeable index cards and is an “open source” text\, meant to be added to\, adapted\, morphed into something new. \nFollowing a group of friends that resist order\, category and completion\, this play weaves myth and storytelling with every day rituals. It is about people deeply in love\, suffering loss\, celebrating strangeness\, all while they pluck their eyebrows. It is about the Greek myth of Salmacis and Hermaphroditus\, who are merged into “one being of both sexes” and about what we see when we look in the mirror. Oh\, and the whole thing is underscored by a band standing in the bathtub. \nTickets: $13 – $16; $20 on opening (3/4) and closing (3/26) nights \nPay-What-You-Can Nights: THU 3/10\, MON 3/21 \nMore info and reservations: http://www.buntport.com/archive/archive.htm

SUMMARY:Creative Mornings: Nathan Hall
DESCRIPTION:Coffee + breakfast + an inspiring speaker. Creative Mornings is a free monthly lecture series  for creatives. Registration required. \nMore info and registration: https://creativemornings.com/talks/nathan-hall \nAbout the March speaker: \nNathan Hall’s works have been called “fearless” in their multifaceted expressions of the composer’s personal and musical identity. Nathan uses music as an artistic medium to explore a variety of fields including science\, nature\, the fine arts\, history\, and sexuality. There is an element of humanity present in all of Nathan’s works\, from his traditional classical pieces for chamber ensembles to experimental electronic pieces\, sound sculptures\, and multimedia projects. \nMany of Nathan’s works are based on his travels\, mapping out a geography of his experiences while taking the listener on their own personal journey. His “landscape” works reinterpret scientific data or historical documents to create sonic textures whose fantastical or dreamlike sounds actually originated in real locations. Other works are inspired by the composer’s sexuality and experiences as a gay man\, creating a special intimacy between performer\, place\, and audience. \nNathan Hall is a former Fulbright Fellow to Iceland\, and holds his Doctorate in Musical Arts from the University of Colorado\, Boulder. He holds degrees from Vassar College (BA) and Carnegie Mellon University (MM). His teachers have included Nancy Galbraith\, Richard Wilson\, Reza Vali\, Carter Pann\, and John Drumheller. His works have been performed and exhibited around the world by groups as diverse as the String Orchestra of Brooklyn\, The Gay/Lesbian Chorus of San Francisco\, Ars Nova Singers\, Duo Harpverk\, a convention of roller coaster enthusiasts\, and porn star Dirk Caber. Nathan’s music and collaborative artworks have won numerous awards\, and he has been the recipient of several residencies\, such as the Catwalk residency in Catskill\, NY\, the Ogilvy Travel Fellowship to Ireland\, and Denver Art Museum’s first Creative in Residence.

SUMMARY:OPENING: Pushing Boundaries: Early Women Artists of Colorado
DESCRIPTION:In the late nineteenth and early twentieth  centuries\, social norms dictated a number of paths that women were expected to follow. Although some roles in art and education were considered acceptable occupations for educated women of the time\, female artists were expected to stay within relatively narrow confines. Tenacious\, resilient\, and persistent in the face of gender norms\, the eighteen Colorado artists featured in this exhibit pushed against these boundaries. \nThrough a long term research project between the University and the Kirkland Museum of Fine & Decorative Art\, students at the University of Denver School of Art and Art History planned and presented the exhibition with faculty leadership. \nEnjoy light refreshments at this exhibition opening co-hosted by the Kirkland Museum of Fine & Decorative Art. The event is free and open to the public. \nThe Vicki Myhren Gallery at DU offers high-quality exhibitions and programming throughout the year. Free admission for everyone every day! \nMore info: http://vicki-myhren-gallery.du.edu/2016/02/22/upcoming-pushing-boundaries/
