SUMMARY:Archaeology of the Undocumented
DESCRIPTION:The U.S.-Mexico border is in the news and the subject of great\, and at times heated\, debate. What is largely lost in the headlines is a vital long-term\, nuanced understanding of the modern immigrant experience. Jason De León is assistant professor of anthropology at the University of Michigan and director of the Undocumented Migration Project. For the past five years\, De León has used path-breaking forensic\, archaeological\, and ethnographic research to examine the trek north through harsh desert\, putting a human face on the real life and death struggles of migrants. Hear tragic and exhilarating stories as narrated by De León’s compelling research from one of the most significant\, dangerous\, and clandestine places in the world. This is the inaugural talk for the George McJunkin Lecture\, recognizing the African American cowboy who discovered bison bones in Folsom\, New Mexico\, that eventually made archaeological history. Image copyright Michael Wells. (DMNS.org) \nTickets: $10 (non-member)\, $8 (member) \nMore info and tickets: https://secure1.dmns.org/products/1514-archaeology-of-the-undocumented.aspx

SUMMARY:A Taste of Colorado
DESCRIPTION:Over 500\,000 people make this 4-day festival their Labor Day Weekend celebration and enjoy the offerings of over 50 area food establishments\, 275 marketplace artisans and vendors\, six entertainment stages\, and educational programs promoting the diverse cultural and western heritage of the region — all for no admission fee. (Taste of Colorado) \nHistory \nOriginally named Festival of Mountain and Plain and established in 1895 as a carnival similar to New Orleans’ Mardi Gras\, the Festival was created to boost the city’s morale and vitality following the silver panic. The event\, unsuccessful in ending Denver’s depression and declining in attendance\, folded in 1902 when organizers were unable to obtain financial support. In 1983\, the Downtown Denver Partnership decided to bring back the spirit of the original Festival to commemorate the opening of the 16th Street Mall. The following year\, A Taste of Colorado was added to the Festival of Mountain and Plain name and concept and moved back to Civic Center Park in Downtown Denver\, where the event first began. (Taste of Colorado) \nHours:\n\nFRI 9/4: 11:30 AM – 10:00 PM\nSAT 9/5 & SUN 9/6:\n10:30 AM – 10:00 PM\nMON 9/7: 10:30 AM – 8:00 PM \nMore info including vendor lists\, music schedule and activity descriptions: http://atasteofcolorado.com

SUMMARY:Play Space: Artist-Led Creative Play
DESCRIPTION:Kids and families are invited to join RedLine for artist-led creative play sessions at Mestizo-Curtis Park on Saturdays\, 10:30 AM – 12:00 PM throughout the summer. \nThe program is FREE and open to the public. Registration is NOT required. Food and drinks will be provided! \nMore Info: http://redlineart.org/art/events/exhibitions/play-space-creative-play.html \nSession Descriptions from Redline: \nSession 1: May 30\, June 6\, June 13\, and June 20 \nLed by artists Ashley Frazier and Michael Sperandeo \nThe first session features community artists Ashley Frazier and Mike Sperandeo with their interactive basketball sculpture. Any person that wants to be involved in the creation of this piece is invited to try and score a basket with a balloon filled with non-toxic\, washable paint. Not only is throwing paint at things as fun as it seems\, but the colorful surface of the sculpture that results from repeated attempts shows that every time you try\, it has an impact. Even if you don’t always reach your intended goal\, the result can still be worthwhile! \nSession 2: June 27\, July 4\, July 11\, July 18 \nLed by artist Christine Dart \nDance instructor Christine Dart will help participants to tell stories about their neighborhood with dance\, theatre and play. Over the four weeks\, children and their families will be able to create a story-telling dance piece that they can perform together. Don’t worry if you aren’t a great dancer – this project is more about having fun while expressing yourself and learning others’ stories than it is about getting the steps perfect.  Participants are encouraged to attend as many dates as possible\, as each one is different and offers the chance to practice and build on what was done the previous week. \nSession 3: July 25\, August 1\, August 8\, August 15 \nLed by artist Tracy Tomko \nCommunity artist Tracy Tomko presents her project\, “Prototypes to Increase Exuberance” features objects modified in ridiculous ways to be swung\, twirled and bounced. The silly\, awkward way in which they are used serves as a method to deal with uncomfortable emotions. As a part of this interactive performance\, participants are encouraged to work with the artist to create their own unusual objects to use\, with their own symbolism and solutions to their own adversities. \nSession 4: August 15\, August 22\, August 29\, September 5 \nLed by arist Risa Murray \nCommunity artist Risa Murray will help the neighborhood to put on a puppet show. From deciding on a story from the Five Points/Whittier/Curtis Park area’s rich and diverse cultural past to making the puppets and sets and finally performing and watching the show as a community\, this fun experience will have children and families working and learning together.

SUMMARY:The Poison King
DESCRIPTION:Widely noted folklorist and science historian Adrienne Mayor brings to life the story of the world’s first experimental toxicologist. Her book The Poison King: The Life and Legend of Mithradates\, Rome’s Deadliest Enemy examines the brilliant rebel leader who challenged Roman imperialism in the first century B.C. The teenage Mithradates inherited a wealthy Black Sea kingdom after his mother poisoned his father. He fled into exile but returned in triumph to become a ruler of intelligence and ambition determined to build an empire to rival Rome. His uncanny ability to elude capture and surge back after devastating losses unnerved the Romans\, while his mastery of poisons allowed him to foil assassination attempts and eliminate rivals. Mayor\, a research scholar in classics and the history and philosophy of science at Stanford University\, will explore how poison and power can operate in tandem to change the course of history. (DMNS.org) \nTickets: $10 (non-member)\, $8 (member) \nMore info and tickets: https://secure1.dmns.org/products/1515-the-poison-king.aspx

SUMMARY:Artist Lecture: Ian Boyden
DESCRIPTION:Ian Boyden works across multiple media including painting\, sculpture\, artist’s books\, photography\, site-specific installations\, and land art. Consistent across his productions is an intense interest in material relevance\, place-based thought\, and ecology\, with a deep awareness of East Asian aesthetics. He studied for several years in China and Japan\, and ultimately received degrees in the History of Art from Wesleyan University (Middletown\, CT) and Yale University. His work is interdisciplinary\, and he often collaborates with a variety of scientists\, poets\, composers\, and other visual artists. Boyden’s work has been described as simultaneously geological and lyrical\, industrial and mystical\, dreamlike and archetypal. His art often links the literary\, material\, and visual imaginations\, paying keen attention to how his work can shape ecological awareness. Boyden makes his own paints and inks\, often from unusual materials such as meteorites\, shark teeth\, freshwater pearls\, and carbon sourced from the aftermath of forest fires. His work has been exhibited widely\, including a recent solo exhibition at the I.M Pei designed Suzhou Museum. His books and paintings are found in many public collections including Reed College\, Stanford University\, the Portland Art Museum\, and the Victoria & Albert Museum. (Center for Visual Art at Metro State) \nFREE and open to the public. \nMore info: http://www.msudenver.edu/cva/events/
