SUMMARY:Día de los Muertos at Denver Botanic Gardens
DESCRIPTION:Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) is a traditional Mexican celebration in which death is recognized as a natural part of the cycle of life. More than 500 years ago\, when the Conquistadors came to what we know as Mexico\, they stumbled upon the Aztec Indians practicing a ritual that seemed to mock death. It wasn’t mockery\, but rather\, a joyful remembrance of those who had died. For more than 3\,000 years the tradition of celebrating life after death has endured. \nTo make this ritual more Christian\, the Spaniards moved the dates to coincide with All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day (Nov. 1 and 2). It is believed that on these dates\, the spirits of the dead visit their families. \nToday\, Día de los Muertos is celebrated in Mexico and certain parts of Central and North America. On this day people create altars in their homes\, they clean and decorate the gravesites of lost loved ones and prepare special foods. They attend mass\, and come together to sing\, dance and eat\, all in remembrance of those who have left this earth. They are never forgotten and therefore\, will never truly die. \nSchedule of Activities:\n9 a.m. – 5 p.m. | Craft and Food Vendors\n9 a.m. – 5 p.m. | Altar Showcase\n10 a.m. – 3 p.m. | Face Painting (additional fee)\n10 a.m. – 4 p.m. | Children’s Craft Activities\n11 a.m. and 2 p.m. | Storytelling by Spellbinders\n11:45 a.m. | Traditional Aztec Dance Demonstration by Grupo Folklorico\n3:30 p.m. | Traditional Chinelos Demonstration \nAdmission:\nMembers: Free\nAdults: $12.50\nSeniors (65 and over): $9.50\nStudents with a valid ID: $9\nChildren 3-15: $9\nChildren 2 and under: Free \nMore info and tickets: http://www.botanicgardens.org/events/special-events/dia-de-los-muertos

SUMMARY:38th Annual Denver Film Festival

SUMMARY:Logan Lecture: Petah Coyne
DESCRIPTION:About Artist Petah Coyne: Petah Coyne’s sculptures convey tension between vulnerability and aggression\, innocence and seduction\, beauty and decadence\, and\, ultimately\, life and death. Existing between the boundaries of figuration and abstraction\, they incorporate unconventional materials such as tree roots\, sand\, human hair\, scrap metal\, silk flowers\, Velcro\, religious statuary\, and taxidermy. She thinks of her sculpture as bodies in movement thus linking the installations to her photography\, which also captures bodies in movement. (DAM) \nDoors open at 5:30 pm; Lecture 6-7:30 pm. \nMeet the Artist: DAM Contemporaries invites you to an après-lecture reception with the artist immediately following each lecture\, at MAD Wine Bar. Enjoy conversations with some of the hottest artists working today\, along with complimentary snacks and a cash bar. \nLecture Tickets: $8 volunteers\, $12 DAMC members and artists\, $15 DAM members\, $18 nonmembers\, students free with valid student ID. \nMore info and tickets: http://denverartmuseum.org/calendar/logan-lecture-petah-coyne

SUMMARY:Digital Earth: Elephant Landscapes
DESCRIPTION:Two species emerged on the African savannas 5 to 7 million years ago: the ancestor of modern elephants and an upright walking ape who eventually gave rise to the elephant’s most feared hunter\, Homo sapiens. Although each lineage spread out of the continent and diversified around the world\, today we question whether these two animals can continue to live side-by-side. Join biologist Shermin de Silva as she shares her unique research on elephant conservation. Her story will be enhanced by immersive global satellite images of elephant range countries. SUMMARY:Creative Mornings: Laleh Mehran
DESCRIPTION:Creative Mornings = inspiring speaker + free breakfast + free coffee + networking \nAbout the Speaker: Laleh Mehran creates experiential art. Her process for making artwork involves both “art” + “work.” Lots of work! It’s in this process of making that ideas can shift\, visuals can expand\, and production methods can improve – all enhancing the final artwork. \nIssues revolving around dissent and exile are of particular interest and concern to Laleh Mehran. The progeny of Iranian scientists\, her relationship to these subjects is necessarily complex\, and is still more so now given a political climate in which certain views are increasingly suspect. Mehran’s research\, often modeled on and about the very ideas of science and technology\, takes advantage of their cultural importance in order to articulate a set of ideas which require precisely these kinds of mediations from both political and religious intolerance. \nMore Info and Tickets: http://creativemornings.com/talks/laleh-mehran
