SUMMARY:Final Week: Mummies: New Secrets from the Tombs
DESCRIPTION:Receive a rare look at mummies from ancient Egypt and Peru\, many on public display for the first time. The experience is enhanced by richly decorated coffins\, sarcophaguses\, mummification tools\, and mummies of birds\, cats\, and crocodiles\, as ancient civilizations and the modern world intersect to unravel the distant past. \nExhibition runs: 10/14/16 – 2/5/17 \n[$7.95 – $23.95] \nMore info and tickets: https://secure1.dmns.org/products/1976-mummies-new-secrets-from-the-tombs-daytime.aspx

SUMMARY:Anchor Institutions and Community Wealth Building
DESCRIPTION:CU School of Public Affairs: Anchor Institutions and Community Wealth Building\nIn the economic development context\, “Eds and Meds” are also referred to as “anchor institutions.” The term “anchors” suggests that these institutions are weighty and important\, and will remain in Denver for the very long-term — unlike some corporations and businesses\, whose physical location might be more fluid. \nUniversities and hospitals are huge employers and also purchase a great deal of goods and services. There is a growing national movement to have these anchor institutions play a larger role in their communities\, especially communities that have faced disadvantages\, and to more intentionally target their resources in local communities. The Denver Foundation is sponsoring a local network of anchor institutions who can learn from each other\, and support developing and learning from best practices. \nPlease join us for a panel discussion of these emerging trends and how some anchor institutions in Denver are planning to move forward. \nPanelists: \n\nDorothy Horrell\, Chancellor\, University of Colorado Denver\nPatrick Horvath\, Senior VP for Economic Opportunity\, Denver Foundation\nDace West\, Executive Director\, Mile High Connects\nRepresentative\, Regis University\nRepresentative\, Anschutz Medical Campus\n\nModerator: Danielle Varda\, Associate Professor\, School of Public Affairs and evaluator of Baltimore’s anchor project for the Annie E. Casey Foundation. \nWhen: 7:30-9 a.m. Friday\, Feb. 3\, 2017\nWhere: Terrace Room (2nd floor)\, 1380 Lawrence Street\, Denver (map)\nAdmission: Free\, but space is limited! Breakfast will be served.

SUMMARY:Hollywood Made in China - What are the Stakes?
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Aynne Kokas is an assistant professor of media studies at the University of Virginia. Kokas’ research broadly examines Sino-US media and technology relations. Her book\,Hollywood Made in China (University of California Press\, 2017) argues that Chinese investment and regulations have fundamentally altered the landscape of the US commercial media industry\, most prominently in the case of major conglomerates that rely on leveraging global commercial brands. Kokas has been a visiting fellow at the Shanghai Institute of International Studies and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. She is a non-resident scholar at Rice University’s Baker Institute of Public Policy and a term member of the Council on Foreign Relations. Her writing and commentary appears regularly in popular media outlets including the BBC\, The Los Angeles Times\, NPR’s Marketplace\, CCTV\, The Washington Post\, and Wired. SUMMARY:Tiny Library Concert: Gabrielle Louise with Jacob Russo
DESCRIPTION:Gabrielle Louise (www.gabriellelouise.com) is a nationally touring troubadour noted for her poignant lyrics and lush voice. Her music is anchored deeply in folk and Americana\, with the earthy feel of early Joni Mitchell and the spirited delivery of fellow genre-hopping artist Eva Cassidy. Gabrielle is at one moment folkie and ethereal\, the next a smoky jazz chanteuse. Known for her authenticity and candor on stage\, her performances are notably present and sincere\, a professional presentation of her private creative world. Gabrielle Louise has shared the stage with greats such as Richie Havens\, Tom Paxton\, Patty Larkin\, Eliza Gilkyson\, and Guy Clark. Her third album\, “If the Static Clears\,” was released in September 2016. \nJacob Russo (www.sonicbids.com/band/jacobrusso) hails from the acoustic corn fields of western Colorado. Although he now calls the Front Range home\, musical explorations have taken him far and wide\, helping craft his unique blend of rustic indie-folk. Jacob’s live performances are tinged with a sort of hopeless honesty found only in the most genuine of folk musicians. He has shared the bill with folk artists such as Gregory Alan Isakov\, SHEL and Caleb Hawley and is a fixture at the Rocky Mountain Folk Festival. \nHistory Colorado’s Tiny Library Concert series features performances by local Colorado musicians in the unusual and intimate setting of the museum’s Stephen H. Hart Library and Research Center. Beer\, wine\, and cocktails will be available for purchase. \n[$9 – $12] \nMore info and tickets: http://www.historycolorado.org/event/tiny-library-concert-featuring-gabrielle-louise-jacob-russo

SUMMARY:The US and China in the Era of Donald Trump
DESCRIPTION:The election of Donald Trump has introduced a big question mark into America’s relations with China. Will the new president start a trade war with the world’s second biggest economy? Will Trump attempt to refashion America’s relations with Taiwan and thus infuriate Beijing? Will Trump’s vow to build more US naval vessels place the US and China on a path to conflict in the South China Sea? How will Trump handle the prospects of a North Korea armed with nuclear weapons and an intercontinental ballistic missile with which to deliver them? \nAs for China\, how will it react to this new administration\, which espouses a decidedly different view of China than the one that predominated in Washington over the past several decades? Will China adopt the role of “responsible global stakeholder” in contrast to Trump’s “America first” ideology? Or will China join the US in a race to the bottom\, precipitating further ideological\, economic and geostrategic competition that pulls the world down with it? \nJohn Pomfret is the author of the critically-acclaimed The Beautiful Country and the Middle Kingdom: America and China from 1776 to the Present. He is also an award-winning author who spent decades as a foreign correspondent with The Washington Post. He has lived in China for 20 years since the early 1980s and also covered US-China relations from Washington\, DC. As The New York Times said of The Beautiful Country\, “Donald Trump (or his next secretary of state) would be well advised to read this timely and comprehensively informative book.” \nLunch Provided.\nPlease register by Thursday Feb. 16th: http://www.du.edu/korbel/china/events/forums.html \n[Free] \nSIE Complex – 5th Floor – Maglione Hall \n2201 S. SUMMARY:The Web of Life: Humans Amid Complex Ecological Networks
DESCRIPTION:Life has a hidden order. Ecologist Jennifer Dunne reveals surprising characteristics shared by ecosystems in radically different environments\, among different species\, and across time. By highlighting patterns in the architecture of how humans and other species interact\, Dunne suggests new ways to understand the sustainability of ecosystems  past\, present\, and future. She also proposes potential lessons for modern humans in fostering a more sustainable future\, using examples from preindustrial hunter-gatherer and agricultural societies.
