IMAGINE 2020 Speaker Series: Artist As… Citizen, Neighbor, Change Agent

July 21, 2016 @ 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm

Artists are painters, filmmakers, dancers, writers, and musicians. But can they also be citizens, neighbors, and change agents? Would the world be a better place if we tapped artists as natural community assets who can help create real change in neighborhoods? The Laundromat Project (The LP) deeply believes so. By investing in artists, they amplify the creativity that already exists within communities while building community networks, solving problems, and enhancing a local sense of ownership. Every day, The LP grapples with both the power and the challenges of being a good and artful citizen, neighbor, and catalyst for change within diverse settings. Kemi Ilesanmi, Executive Director of The LP, will examine this and more as she explores how an arts organization may intentionally help to create a community of neighbors, artists included.

The Laundromat Project (The LP) achieves its mission by bringing socially relevant and socially engaged arts programming to laundromats and other everyday community spaces in order to reach as many of their neighbors as possible.
