Pigeons Like You’ve Never Seen

April 24, 2017 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

Sure, you see them everyday, but how much do you really know about pigeons?

SOME FACTS: The rock pigeon was likely among the first domesticated bird species, nearly 5,000 years ago. It is also one of the most anatomically diverse. Charles Darwin noted that the differences among breeds within this one species are equivalent to the diversity typically seen across different groups of birds.

Michael Shapiro, who specializes in biology and human genetics at the University of Utah, is using traditional breeding experiments and cutting-edge genetic techniques to uncover differences in pigeon plumage and other anatomical traits. The unassuming pigeon is providing important new clues about evolutionary change, diseases in humans, and more. Consider the nuances of this common bird and deepen your appreciation for the pigeon’s place in the modern world.
