Untitled Final Fridays

January 29, 2016 @ 6:00 pm - 10:00 pm

Untitled Final Fridays at Denver Art Museum offer a late night chance (the DAM is open until 10p) to explore the galleries, make and create with cool collaborative partners from around Denver and sip a beverage from the cash bar with your art-inclined friends. All of this extra programming is included with museum admission!

About the Event from the Denver Art Museum Website:

Calling all kiddos, champs, and black sheep! It’s a new Untitled season and to kick it off, we’re getting in a family way. Wait, that came out wrong…what I mean is…we’re gathering up family and friends for a night that celebrates traditions, stories, and skills passed down through the generations.

First things first. The DAM’s current Native Arts Artist-in-Residence Gregg Deal is rounding out his residency with a provocative performance entitled “White Indian”. You can follow along and catch three performance pieces centering on pop culture, indigenous identity, and the politics of bloodlines. Gregg is a father, husband, and world class button-pusher who recently relocated to Denver. Welcome to the family, Gregg!

Next up, our brothers-from-another-mother—i.e. the Denver Public Library—will help us finally answer that lingering question: am I the weird kid? Whether you’re the middle child or the golden child, DPL has some fun in store.

Family Photos, Awkward & Otherwise

Say cheese and hold still, it’s time for family photos. Photographer Jesse Paige Rowe busts out the albums to shine a light on how and why we photograph the ones we love, along with tips, tricks, and challenges of the trade.

Speaking of family photos, things just got a little awkward….Grab your friends and reenact some of our favorite family scenes from the DAM collections. Matching denim and laser beam backdrops optional.

Urkel Anyone?

If you feel like getting gussied up, what better way to pay homage to a Family Matters night than a good old-fashioned Steve Urkel costume? I don’t know about you, but my suspender game is going to be on fleek. (Is that what the kids are saying these days?)

Car Stories

Set up the slide projector and pull up a chair because Denver favorites, The Narrators are here to regale us with stories of family vacations. Comedians Christie Buchele and Samantha Schmitz and other interesting folks lead us through a night of traveler tales and rowdy road trips.

Next up, it’s time for car confessionals…listen, we love the holidays as much as the next guy, but, after months of tense travels and small talk with Aunt Sally, we might all need a minute to vent. Lucky for us, world-renowned vehicular therapist Dr. Marvin Archibald is coming to Untitled to lend an ear and teach the art of automotivation. Jump in the back seat and unpack your baggage. Sound weird? Don’t worry; when it comes to venting, Marvin is just what the doctor ordered.

Family Dynamics in Art

Now that you’ve let it all out, let’s dive into the hidden dynamics of our favorite painted families with licensed marriage and family therapist Dr. Linda Chassman. While we’re there, we’ll chat with husband and wife artists Hollis + Lana about their new family-inspired creation.

As we all know, family isn’t just the one you’re born into. What about the families you choose? You know, your friends and neighbors? Untitled brothers, Warm Cookies of the Revolution, are back to branch out and plant our community roots, and Joan and Charlie of Buntport Theater Company are here to spread the love.

Finally, as an extra special treat, Ink Lounge is in the house to help you screen print and decorate your very own family Coat of Arms! Show off your colors and share what makes your family, friends, and community special. It will be so pretty, Mom’s sure to put it on the fridge.
