SUMMARY:Artist talk with Rachel Harper
DESCRIPTION:Rachel Harper is a Chicago-based artist who was a residential artist at the Art Institute of Chicago\, a Learning Fellow at Chicago Art Department\, and grant recipient from the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs. Rachel is the current Stockyard Institute Artist in Residence. Her research studio is a converted classroom in a Chicago public school where she works alongside 600 child colleagues. She also is the founder of Seen + Heard\, an artist project advocating for children’s cultural works\, leads the Teacher Institute at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago\, and teaches Education courses at DePaul University and the University of Illinois at Chicago where she is doctoral candidate and a Schubert Fellow. Her BFA and MA are from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago where her thesis was awarded the Fellowship in Art Education. DESCRIPTION:This event is free and open to the public \nAbout the Artist (from CVA): Joanne Pillsbury is the Andrall E. Pearson Curator at the Metropolitan Museum of Art\, New York. A specialist in the art and archaeology of the ancient Americas\, she holds a Ph.D. in art history and archaeology from Columbia University. Previously associate director of the Getty Research Institute\, and prior to that\, director of Pre-Columbian Studies at Dumbarton Oaks\, she has also taught at the University of Maryland and the University of East Anglia. She was the editor or co-editor of numerous volumes\, including the three-volume Guide to Documentary Sources for Andean Studies\, 1530-1900 (2008); Moche Art and Archaeology in Ancient Peru (2001); and Ancient Maya Art at Dumbarton Oaks (2012)\, recipient of the College Art Association’s Alfred H. Barr\, Jr.\, Award. Her 2012 volume\, Past Presented: Archaeological Illustration and the Ancient Americas\, was honoured with the Association for Latin American Art Book Award. DESCRIPTION:This event is free and open to the public. \nAbout the Artist (from CVA): Deb Sokolow is a Chicago-based artist whose text-driven drawings combine research\, fiction and humor to speculate on topics concerning politics\, conspiracy theory and human nature. Recent exhibitions include the 4th Athens Biennale in Greece\, The Drawing Center in New York City\, Museum für Gegenwartskunst Siegen in Germany and The Institute of Contemporary Art\, Philadelphia. Sokolow’s 2013 solo exhibition at the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art\, Some Concerns About the Candidate\, was reviewed in the New York Times. Her work has been reproduced for Creative Time’s Comics project\, for Swedish magazine\, Paletten\, and in Vitamin D2\, a survey on contemporary drawing. She is a recipient of the 2012 Artadia award and residencies at Art Omi and Nordic Artists’ Centre in Norway. DESCRIPTION:Talk with Professor Arthur Gilbert and Pulitzer-Prize Winning Cartoonist Mike Keefe\, 7pm \nFree and open to the public. \nAbout the Exhibit: The Center for Visual Art\, for the first time in its history\, is presenting work that dates back more than two hundred years in Under the Guillotine: James Gillray and Contemporary Counterparts. Over 60 original hand-colored etchings will be shown from the collection of Arthur Gilbert\, professor at the University of Denver. London artist James Gillray (1756 – 1815)\, hailed as the father of modern caricature\, was not reserved in his biting critique of European politics and social norms of his day. In this work we see Gillray’s dark humor unleashed at the expense of the royal family\, the institution of marriage and healthcare\, among other current issues. \nAlthough Gillray’s etchings date back over 200 years\, the themes are familiar to contemporary society\, highlighting the cyclical nature of history. In response to the ongoing relevance of Gillray’s subject matter\, a contemporary take on political satire is presented by the work of three living artists\, Molly Crabapple\, Chris Dacre\, and Deb Sokolow. These artists wield wit and irony in their critique of today’s political and social norms. \nNew York artist and writer Molly Crabapple is a contributing editor for VICE magazine. Her illustrations take a line from Gillray’s brand of satire\, pointing out the ridiculous and unjust with irreverence. Illustrations in the exhibition draw from her press tour of Guantanamo Bay prison and other articles in VICE and Vanity Fair\, in which she targets Donald Trump and ISIS. Crabapple’s memoir\, Drawing Blood\, will be released in December 2015. \nThe work of Chris Dacre reflects upon his own experience in the US military. Shining a light on the hypocrisy of war glorification and recruiting techniques targeted at the naïve\, Dacre’s toy-sized porcelain tanks and pirouetting soldiers beckon the curious to play at the game of war. His installation also includes lithographs depicting war scenes emblazoned with commands to “Be A Man!” or “Do Something for Once in Your Life\,” sentiments felt if not heard once the game of war becomes reality. \nChicago-based artist Deb Sokolow combines fiction and humor to create work that parallels real life events and characters. For this exhibition\, Sokolow is contributing text-based works focused on the conspiracy theories swirling around Denver International Airport and the shady campaign strategy of a fictional politician. \nMore info: http://www.msudenver.edu/cva/

DESCRIPTION:This program is free and open to the public. \nAbout the Artist (from CVA): Julie Poitras Santos’ solo and collaborative work has been exhibited internationally at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Denver\, Reykjanesbaer Art Museum in Iceland and at the Centre for Contemporary Culture in Barcelona\, Spain\, among others. She has attended residencies and created performances and projects in the United States\, Spain\, France\, Germany\, the Netherlands and Iceland\, including residencies at the European Ceramic Work Center\, in ‘s-Hertogenbosch\, NL (2005\, 2008)\, Valparaiso in Mojacar\, Spain (2006) and NES Artists Residency in Skagastrond\, Iceland (2009). \nPoitras Santos has taught sculpture at Bowdoin College\, Rocky Mountain College of Art and Design\, and the University of Colorado at Boulder. She lived in Barcelona\, Spain for three years (2004-2007) and worked as the Artistic Director of the Art Residency program Can Serrat\, in Montserrat National Park. \nPoitras Santos holds two MFAs\, one in Visual Arts from the University of Colorado at Boulder\, 2000\, and a second in Poetry from the Stonecoast Creative Writing program\, 2013. SUMMARY:Artist Lecture: Ian Boyden
DESCRIPTION:Ian Boyden works across multiple media including painting\, sculpture\, artist’s books\, photography\, site-specific installations\, and land art. Consistent across his productions is an intense interest in material relevance\, place-based thought\, and ecology\, with a deep awareness of East Asian aesthetics. He studied for several years in China and Japan\, and ultimately received degrees in the History of Art from Wesleyan University (Middletown\, CT) and Yale University. His work is interdisciplinary\, and he often collaborates with a variety of scientists\, poets\, composers\, and other visual artists. Boyden’s work has been described as simultaneously geological and lyrical\, industrial and mystical\, dreamlike and archetypal. His art often links the literary\, material\, and visual imaginations\, paying keen attention to how his work can shape ecological awareness. Boyden makes his own paints and inks\, often from unusual materials such as meteorites\, shark teeth\, freshwater pearls\, and carbon sourced from the aftermath of forest fires. His work has been exhibited widely\, including a recent solo exhibition at the I.M Pei designed Suzhou Museum. His books and paintings are found in many public collections including Reed College\, Stanford University\, the Portland Art Museum\, and the Victoria & Albert Museum. SUMMARY:A New Fine Line: Contemporary Ink Painting from China\, Artist Reception
DESCRIPTION:From the CVA: Considered China’s most conservative brush technique\, the gongbi method of painting combines fine lines with multiple layers of both ink-shadings and colors. The exhibition features the works of 9 contemporary Chinese artists from the Beijing Art Institute of Chinese Fine Arts Painting\, who utilize the gongbi technique to create works that embody contemporary subject matter and themes. \nThe gongbi technique uses highly detailed brush strokes that delimits details very precisely and without independent or expressive variation. It is often highly colored and usually depicts figural or narrative subjects. \nThese 9 contemporary Chinese artists share the gongbi brush trasition and are leaders of a new fine line technique.
