SUMMARY:Museums and Making in the 21st Century
DESCRIPTION:Free and open to the public. \nThree times each year\, the Clyfford Still Museum presents a seasonal keynote. Curators\, art historians\, cultural theorists and other luminaries are invited to present on a special topic related to a special exhibition or to larger concerns in the field of art\, art history\, culture\, and museums. This season\, join Glenn Adamson for a discussion about the practice of making in contemporary art and craft and its intersection with museum practice. \nIn recent years\, we have seen a huge resurgence of interest in making of all kinds. Among amateurs\, artists and designers alike\, there is a newfound respect for skill\, craftsmanship\, and material intelligence. What is the role of museums\, traditionally places for quiet reflection\, in fostering this enthusiasm for interactive process? Adamson will consider this question and discuss the live activation-oriented approach that he and his team are pursuing at MAD. \nSharp Auditorium at the Denver Art Museum\nFree | Registration Required \nMore info and registration: https://clyffordstillmuseum.org/event/spring-keynote-museums-and-making-in-the-21st-century/

SUMMARY:Beer Pots and Beadwork: Exploring South Sotho Arts from Southern Africa
DESCRIPTION:Art is an expression of ourselves and the world in which we live\, and the study of visual art allows us to gain nuanced understandings of the many cultures within our global society. This notion serves as the point of departure for Colorado State University art historian David Riep\, who will discuss his field research among South Sotho populations in South Africa and Lesotho\, which took place between 2007 and 2011. \nFrom beer pots to beadwork\, Riep will discuss the unique formal aspects of South Sotho visual arts\, and highlight how unique form\, pattern\, and color are used to promote identity and cultural affiliation. In addition\, Riep will share his experiences working with South Sotho artists\, oral historians\, kings\, chiefs\, and religious practitioners in order to locate local perspectives on their art and history\, and to understand how the visual arts function in South Sotho society. \nCheck-in at North Building\, lower level. \nTickets are $5 for Friends of Native Arts members\, $10 for DAM members\, $12 others\, free for students with ID. \nMore info and tickets: http://denverartmuseum.org/calendar/beer-pots-and-beadwork-exploring-south-sotho-arts-southern-africa

SUMMARY:Art and Politics in Late 18th Century New Spain
DESCRIPTION:In 1795\, the viceroy of New Spain\, Manuel de la Grúa\, requested permission to erect a monumental equestrian sculpture in honor of Charles IV\, King of Spain. Shortly after the unveiling of the bronze monument in Mexico City in 1796\, a painted equestrian portrait of the deceased former viceroy\, Bernardo de Galvez\, was completed. However\, the painting\, although seemingly emulating the royal equestrian motif\, seems at odds with the official public work. \nBy examining the Galvez portrait’s dissonant attributes in relation to its context of production\, what issues\, problems\, or questions can be raised that may provide insight into the political environment of late colonial New Spain? \nThe lecture will be presented by Ray Hernández-Durán\, Associate Professor\, Department of Art and Art History\, University of New Mexico. \nDoors open at 2 pm. \nPurchase tickets at the door. Free for Alianza members; $5 for DAM members; $10 others; free for students with valid ID. \nMore info: http://denverartmuseum.org/calendar/art-and-politics-late-18th-century-new-spain

SUMMARY:Curator's Circle: Lethal Beauty - Design Elements in Samurai Suits of Armor
DESCRIPTION:Japanese suits of armor stand out among the armor of other world cultures because of their flashy\, colorful appearance and exquisite design. The armor most often seen in exhibitions or auctions ranges in date from the 16th to the 19th centuries. During this time a large industry of samurai-oriented crafts catered to a significant part of Japanese society. \nThis lecture by Dr. Andreas Marks\, Curator of Japanese and Korean Art\, Minneapolis Institute of Art\, will focus on the design of suits of armor and will especially address helmet forms and often found elements like demonic Chinese lions. Reception following. \nDoors open at 6 pm \nFree event\, but reservations are required. \nMore info and tickets: http://denverartmuseum.org/calendar/curator-s-circle-lethal-beauty-design-elements-samurai-suits-armor
