SUMMARY:Public Art Dedication: "Flower Girl"
DESCRIPTION:Please join Denver Arts & Venues to dedicate “Flower Girl” at the Denver Botanic Gardens into the Denver Public Art Collection. \n“Flower Girl” is a 5’ x 5’ x 5’ carved sculpture created by Madeline Wiener at the Denver Botanic Gardens Sensory Garden. The piece is a female figure created from Colorado Yule Marble (Colorado’s State Stone) with outstretched hands holding flowers; visitors are encouraged to interact with the piece\, climbing onto the marble and using her lap as a resting place. She is offering a lotus blossom in her right hand and holding a bouquet of stylized flowers that might be recognized throughout the Gardens. Those familiar with Wiener’s artistic style will find the piece immediately identifiable as one of her works. \nThis event is FREE and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served. Please enter through the Piñión Gate just north of the Visitor’s Center. \n[Free] \nMore info: http://artsandvenuesdenver.com/event/458575 \nAbout Madeline Wiener: Contemporary abstract figures in stone\, from marble to sandstone to granite\, have been Madeline Wiener’s main focus since studying at The New York School of Visual Arts from 1968-1974.  A trip to Italy and her many days of sketching sculptures at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art in New York began Madeline’s journey in stone. Founder/director of The Marble Institute of Colorado\, Madeline has remained intent on finding new and expressive ways to create her abstract figurative stone sculptures. Working trips to far-away places like Scotland and India have provided the opportunity to create site-specific\, monumental public installations and fulfilled Madeline’s dream of using her art to foster cultural exchange. The creation of the Marble Institute of Colorado’s MARBLE/marble Symposium has provided a venue for cultural exchanges between artists from different countries and varying disciplines. \nAbout the Sensory Garden: This unique garden utilizes architectural features and sensory plantings to enable people of all ages and abilities to interact with plants. Specialized gardening techniques and structures help to minimize barriers and maximize people’s abilities.

SUMMARY:A Midcentury Icon: 50 Years of the Boettcher Memorial Tropical Conservatory
DESCRIPTION:Enjoy 60s-themed appetizers and nonalcoholic beverages\, tours of the conservatory\, a panel discussion and more. \nThe Gardens’ Boettcher Memorial Tropical Conservatory was completed in 1966. The building has been a midcentury architectural landmark for 50 years. Designed by architects Victor Hornbein and Ed White\, the 11\,500 square foot building took two years to build and is the only conservatory in the country made of cast-in-place concrete. Even before its completion\, the building won international recognition for its unique design and unusual structure. More than 600 species and varieties of tropical plants are displayed. The tropical terrain includes pools\, waterfalls and four resident ducks. \nTo celebrate this anniversary\, the Gardens is hosting a special event. Guests are invited to enjoy 60s-themed appetizers\, nonalcoholic beverages\, live jazz by Linda Maich and Sean McGowan and tours of the conservatory. The Boettcher Tropical Conservatory will be open after dark to allow the rare opportunity to tour the space with horticulturists and docents. Markers will identify plants that have been present since 1966. \nThe event moves into Mitchell Hall for a video interview with lead architect Ed White\, Dan Havekost associate architect and Richard Breaker from GH Phipps Construction. A panel discussion with architecture and history experts further explores how this building has been an icon on Denver’s architectural landscape and continues to inspire architects and enthusiasts of midcentury design. \nPanel Participants:\nBrian Vogt\, Denver Botanic Gardens CEO – Moderator\nDavid Daniel\, Associate Principal\, Davis Partnership Architects\nKurt Klanderud\, President of GH Phipps Construction Companies\nKim Manajek\, Associate Director of Exhibitions\, Art & Interpretation at Denver Botanic Gardens\nSteve Turner\, Vice President of Preservation Programs at History Colorado\, State Historic Preservation Officer \nTickets: $25 nonmember; $20 member \nMore info and tickets: http://www.botanicgardens.org/events/special-events/midcentury-icon-50-years-boettcher-memorial-tropical-conservatory
