SUMMARY:NASA's Viking Project
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate the 40th anniversary of NASA’s Viking Missions\, marking the first successful landings on the surface of Mars. Two identical spacecraft (Viking 1 and Viking 2)\, each consisting of a nuclear-powered lander and a solar-powered orbiter\, were built. Each orbiter-lander was launched together and entered the Mars orbit in mid-1976; the landers then separated and descended to the planet’s surface. Both orbiters and landers returned a treasure trove of observations for several years. The missions had strong ties to our community—Viking Lander 1 and 2 were built in Denver at Martin Marietta’s Waterton Canyon facility. \nThis panel of engineers and scientists who worked on the Viking missions will share the challenges and triumphs\, and how the findings have continued to shape our understanding of the Red Planet: \n\nGuy Beutelschies participated in spacecraft engineering teams for numerous planetary exploration missions and serves as director of space exploration systems at Lockheed Martin Space Systems.\nDr. Ben Clark\, from the Space Science Institute\, developed the X-ray Fluorescence Spectrometer soil chemistry analyzers for the Viking Lander missions and served as Lockheed Martin’s chief scientist of space exploration systems.\nDr. Bruce Jakosky\, of LASP at the University of Colorado\, participated in the Mars Atmospheric Water Detector experiment on the Viking Orbiter missions and serves as the principal investigator of the MAVEN mission currently operating at Mars.\n\nTickets: $12 – $15 \nMore info and tickets: http://www.dmns.org/learn/adults/after-hours/nasas-viking-project/

Becoming a dog musher was Harry Okpik’s childhood dream\, but during the Dog Slaughter in the 1960s\, when government agents shot thousands of Inuit huskies across the Canadian Arctic\, 11-year-old Harry thought his dream was forever destroyed. Twelve years later\, after traumatic residential schooling\, another personal tragedy struck when he suffered a shooting accident and the eventual loss of his leg. In this powerful documentary\, filmed over the course of several seasons\, Harry recounts the momentous events of his life\, including the realization of his life-long dream of running a dog sled team in the 600-km Ivakkak race\, and the challenge of passing on his knowledge to a younger generation. In Inuktitut and English. SUMMARY:In the Heart of the Amazon
DESCRIPTION:Eduardo Neves\, the renowned Brazilian archaeologist and a leading researcher in Amazonian ancient studies\, unearths stories of the rain forest’s past and of the civilizations that have called it home. During 15 years of work\, Neves and his team have discovered vast orchards of semi-domesticated fruit trees and huge swaths of terra preta\, so-called Indian dark earth that is land made fertile by mixing charcoal\, human waste\, and other organic matter with soil. Engage in this collaborative and community-based conversation as Neves shares his groundbreaking research\, which argues that the Amazon has a much deeper and far more complex history than ever imagined. \nTickets: $12 member\, $15 nonmember \nMore info and tickets: https://secure1.dmns.org/products/1814-the-heart-of-the-amazon.aspx

SUMMARY:Chernobyl: In Memoriam
DESCRIPTION:UPDATE: SOLD OUT \nThirty years ago\, a catastrophic human-caused disaster echoed around the globe. The Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in Ukraine melted down. The horror of the fallout and tragedies surrounding the ongoing containment efforts began to unfold on the evening news only two days after the accident. Photographer and filmmaker Philip Grossman of Colorado has dedicated years to documenting the elusive\, dangerous\, and fascinating Chernobyl Nuclear Exclusion Zone. During seven expeditions over five years\, he amassed 20\,000 images and 60 hours of film\, including very rare photographs inside one of the reactor blocks\, ground zero for the accident\, in addition to the first drone footage ever shot in the region. Grossman will share his internationally acclaimed images on the IMAX screen and stories from his time at the site\, including of his recent nuptials that actually took place in the zone. \nTickets: $12 member\, $15 nonmember \nMore info and tickets: http://www.dmns.org/learn/adults/after-hours/chernobyl-in-memoriam/

SUMMARY:Get Inside Your Mind: A Tour of the Human Mind
DESCRIPTION:Back by popular demand! What sparks human curiosity? The answer and more lie somewhere in the brain’s complex architecture. Get a look inside your head during a tour of the brain projected on the immersive planetarium dome at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science with Jonathan Fisher\, assistant professor of physiology\, New York Medical College. Fisher founded the Neurodome project\, which combines planetarium technology with high resolution brain imaging techniques. From witnessing sparks of electrical activity in individual neurons to sailing down neural pathways that support consciousness\, emotions\, and complex thought\, you will explore the fundamental mechanisms of brain function—and what it means to be human. \nTickets: $12 member\, $15 nonmember \nMore info: http://dmns.org/learn/adults/after-hours/get-inside-your-mind-tour-the-human-brain/
