SUMMARY:FINAL WEEK: Ultimate Dinosaurs
DESCRIPTION:Ultimate Dinosaurs goes beyond familiar dinosaurs to showcase some of the most spectacular fossils unearthed in recent years. \nWhy were southern dinosaurs so bizarre and unique from their better-known North American counterparts? There are lots of ways in the exhibition to dig into this question. Highlights: \n\nSeventeen fully articulated skeletons and dozens of fossils and casts\, including dinosaurs discovered by scientists from the Denver Museum of Nature & Science.\nStunning video projections and life-size murals that take you back to prehistoric time.\nVideo projection of sauropods that gives you an opportunity to walk (and run!) alongside life-size dinosaurs.\nAugmented reality (AR) viewers that guests look through to examine the skeleton of Carnotaurus\, laying skin over the bones and showing what it looked like in real life.\nFossil Prep Lab activities to try out fossil preparation techniques on special fossil casts and let kids imagine and explore with some tools of the trade.\nStations with interactive projection microscopes\, touchable specimens\, puzzles\, and more.\nMicrofossil sifter that demonstrates how paleontologists search for tiny fossils.\nDigital continental drift game to reassemble the continent of Gondwana and gather facts about the southern hemisphere and their prehistoric residents.\n3D printer creating replicas of real fossils.\nDinosaur Adventure Guide to use at embossing stations throughout the exhibition.\n\n[Exhibition is included with Museum admission.] \nMore info: http://www.dmns.org/ultimate-dinosaurs/

SUMMARY:Dinosaurs of the Great Red Island
DESCRIPTION:The Great Red Island\, commonly known as Madagascar\, has been isolated for more than 88 million years\, even though it’s separated from the southeast coast of Africa by less than 300 miles. David Krause\, senior curator of vertebrate paleontology\, and Joe Sertich\, curator of dinosaurs\, have studied Madagascar’s unique fossil record for years. Discoveries in the northwestern Mahajanga Basin have revealed an incredibly diverse and well-preserved assemblage of dinosaurs and other animals that thrived on Madagascar approximately 67 million years ago. Almost all of these species are new to science\, and many represent extremely bizarre forms\, such as the large predator Majungasaurus\, the very bird-like dinosaur Rahonavis\, the heaviest-known frog Beelzebufo\, and the largest Mesozoic mammal of the southern hemisphere Vintana. These dinosaur hunters will share firsthand the amazing opportunity to work at this singular location on our planet and how ongoing expeditions continue to reveal significant scientific findings. \n[$8 member\, $10 nonmember] \nMore info: http://www.dmns.org/learn/adults/after-hours/dinosaurs-of-the-great-red-island/

SUMMARY:Indigenous Film: Four Faces of the Moon and Ishi's Return
DESCRIPTION:The Denver Museum of Nature & Science is pleased to partner with the International Institute for Indigenous Resource Management and the Denver American Indian Commission to present Indigenous Film\, a monthly indigenous film series. \nThe film will be screened at the Museum’s Phipps Theater. Doors open at 6 p.m.\, films begin at 6:30 p.m. Please use the IMAX Evening Entrance on the east side of the Museum. Admission is free. Concessions are available for purchase. \nWednesday\, November 8 \n6:30 p.m. \nFour Faces of the Moon and Ishi’s Return \nFour Faces of the Moon\, Director Amanda Strong (Michif/Cree/ Anishinaabe). This intricate stop-motion animation interlaces Canada’s colonial past with Strong’s personal history\, and illuminates Cree\, Métis\, and Anishinaabe reclamation of culture\, language\, and nationhood. In Cree and French with English subtitles. (Winnipeg Film Group\, 2016\, 13 min.). \nIshi’s Return\, Director Chris Eyre (Cheyenne/Arapaho). In 1911\, when Ishi emerged from the woods in Oroville\, California\, he became a national sensation known as “the last wild Indian.” Ishi’s story demonstrates the insidious power of purposeful forgetting. For a country determined to forget its treatment of American Indians\, it was expedient to promote the myth of “vanishing Indians” and relegate them permanently to the past. How\, then\, was it possible that 80 years after his death\, it was Ishi’s descendants who compelled the Smithsonian to repatriate his remains for a proper burial? The film travels an emotional path from Ishi’s first encounter with modern society\, the dehumanizing manner in which he was poked\, prodded and displayed\, to the triumph of his descendants who had the audacity to continue to exist. (Katahdin Productions\, 2016\, 38 min.). \nAudience discussion and Q&A will follow the film screening. \n[Free] \nMore info: http://www.dmns.org/learn/adults/indigenous-film/ \n2017 Schedule \nNo screening in December \nStay tuned for the 2018 schedule!

SUMMARY:Unwrapping the Secrets of the Mummies
DESCRIPTION:For years\, the Egyptian Mummies gallery has displayed two female mummies\, described as the “Rich Mummy” and the “Poor Mummy.” In 2016\, a team of Egyptologists from around the country banded together to find out how today’s leading technologies could shed more light on the lives of these two women. Michele Koons\, curator of archaeology\, led the research\, which included radiocarbon dating\, isotope analysis\, tree ring core sampling\, portable x-ray fluorescence\, and an ambulance ride for the mummies to be CT scanned at Children’s Hospital Colorado. Join Koons to get all the exciting details on the new science\, which will be newly interpreted in Egyptian Mummies in October. The Marie Wormington Lecture is named for the renowned anthropologist who had an illustrious career at the Museum. \n[$8 member\, $10 nonmember] \nMore info: http://www.dmns.org/learn/adults/after-hours/unwrapping-the-secrets-of-the-mummies/

SUMMARY:Migration and Adaptation in Our Changing World
DESCRIPTION:This program is part of an annual series presented in partnership with Bird Conservancy of the Rockies. \nWhen animal populations are impacted by human-caused changes\, they are forced to move to new places\, modify how they behave\, or face extinction. Ellen D. Ketterson\, professor of biology at Indiana University Bloomington\, addresses our need as invested citizens to understand animal migration and seasonality in relation to the loss of biodiversity. Ketterson will examine the very real implications of our changing world through the lens of a model bird species\, the dark-eyed junco\, commonly known as the snowbird. By focusing on the details and consequences of environmental change and how organisms respond\, humans will be equipped to develop ways to predict future responses to ongoing environmental change and champion the biodiversity that makes our planet so amazing. \nThe final lecture in the series is The Genius of Birds on November 2. \n[$12 Museum or Bird Conservancy of the Rockies member\, $15 nonmember] \nMore info: http://www.dmns.org/learn/adults/after-hours/migration-and-adaptation-in-our-changing-world/

SUMMARY:What's in Your Gut?
DESCRIPTION:As you’re probably well aware\, there’s a lot going on in your gut\, but did you realize our intestines have a place in history? Jessica Metcalf\, assistant professor of animal sciences at Colorado State University\, uses microbes preserved in coprolites (ancient fecal material) to characterize the gut microbiome of ancient humans\, allowing her to map how our intestines have changed over time\, particularly in the recent past due to western practices\, such as widespread use of antibiotics\, high-fat diets\, and intense hygiene practices. Get up close and personal with these microscopic organisms\, and find out the implications Metcalf’s research has for human health. \n[$12 – $15] \nMore info and tickets: http://www.dmns.org/learn/adults/after-hours/whats-in-your-gut/
