SUMMARY:What's in Your Gut?
DESCRIPTION:As you’re probably well aware\, there’s a lot going on in your gut\, but did you realize our intestines have a place in history? Jessica Metcalf\, assistant professor of animal sciences at Colorado State University\, uses microbes preserved in coprolites (ancient fecal material) to characterize the gut microbiome of ancient humans\, allowing her to map how our intestines have changed over time\, particularly in the recent past due to western practices\, such as widespread use of antibiotics\, high-fat diets\, and intense hygiene practices. Get up close and personal with these microscopic organisms\, and find out the implications Metcalf’s research has for human health. \n[$12 – $15] \nMore info and tickets: http://www.dmns.org/learn/adults/after-hours/whats-in-your-gut/

SUMMARY:Wolves of Yellowstone
DESCRIPTION:Uncover the complex lives of gray wolves with Museum instructor Sue Ware\, PhD\, as your guide to this member of the canine family. Rooted in firsthand research from six years as a contributor to the Wolf Recovery Project in Yellowstone National Park\, Ware will highlight the work she does with wolves that have died in order to determine the age at death\, trauma\, disease\, and cause of death. Learn what the physical remains of these gray wolves are teaching researchers about the evolution\, behavior\, and success of the reintroduction of this apex predator back into Yellowstone’s modern ecosystem. Then find out how the impact of disease\, trauma and injury on the lives of the gray wolves can benefit other wildlife studies being conducted in Yellowstone. \n[$8 member\, $10 nonmember] \nMore info and tickets: http://www.dmns.org/learn/adults/after-hours/wolves-of-yellowstone/

SUMMARY:America’s Great Eclipses: 1878 and 2017
DESCRIPTION:On August 21\, a total solar eclipse will cross the United States from coast to coast for the first time in 99 years. As you prepare for this rare celestial spectacle\, join Boulder author David Baron to hear the story of another great American eclipse\, which traversed Colorado in 1878 and lured the era’s preeminent scientists to the Wild West. Among the eclipse chasers that year were Vassar astronomer Maria Mitchell\, who assembled an all-female expedition to Denver to show what women could do in science\, and a young Thomas Edison\, who shortly thereafter lit the world with his most famous invention. Baron will also provide tips on viewing this summer’s eclipse\, which will be easiest to see to the north of Colorado\, where the moon’s shadow will darken a narrow path across Wyoming and Nebraska. Baron is the author of American Eclipse: A Nation’s Epic Race to Catch the Shadow of the Moon and Win the Glory of the World. Book sale and signing to follow. \n[$12 – $15] \nMore info: http://www.dmns.org/learn/adults/after-hours/americas-great-eclipses-1878-and-2017/

SUMMARY:Black Faces\, White Spaces: A Conversation with Carolyn Finney
DESCRIPTION:In the compelling debut book Black Faces\, White Spaces\, Carolyn Finney explores why African Americans are so underrepresented when it comes to interest in nature\, outdoor recreation\, and environmentalism. Finney argues that the legacies of slavery\, Jim Crow\, and racial violence have shaped cultural understandings of the “great outdoors” and determined who should and can have access to natural spaces. As a member of the U.S. National Parks Advisory Board and a cultural geographer at the University of Kentucky\, Finney is at the forefront of a movement to understand how people negotiate their relationship to the environment. During this evening of impactful discussion\, Finney will address how art\, science\, and popular culture create frameworks for engagement among individuals\, communities\, and organizations to nurture healthy relationships between humans and the environment. This is the second George McJunkin Lecture\, in honor of the African American cowboy whose discovery of ancient bison bones in Folsom\, New Mexico\, helped make archaeological history. A book sale and signing will follow the lecture. \n[$8 – $12] \nMore info and tickets: http://www.dmns.org/learn/adults/after-hours/black-faces-white-spaces-a-conversation-with-carolyn-finney/

SUMMARY:Pigeons Like You've Never Seen
DESCRIPTION:Sure\, you see them everyday\, but how much do you really know about pigeons? \nSOME FACTS: The rock pigeon was likely among the first domesticated bird species\, nearly 5\,000 years ago. It is also one of the most anatomically diverse. Charles Darwin noted that the differences among breeds within this one species are equivalent to the diversity typically seen across different groups of birds. \nMichael Shapiro\, who specializes in biology and human genetics at the University of Utah\, is using traditional breeding experiments and cutting-edge genetic techniques to uncover differences in pigeon plumage and other anatomical traits. The unassuming pigeon is providing important new clues about evolutionary change\, diseases in humans\, and more. Consider the nuances of this common bird and deepen your appreciation for the pigeon’s place in the modern world. \n[$12 – $15] \nTickets and info: http://www.dmns.org/learn/adults/after-hours/pigeons-like-youve-never-seen/
