SUMMARY:The Web of Life: Humans Amid Complex Ecological Networks
DESCRIPTION:Life has a hidden order. Ecologist Jennifer Dunne reveals surprising characteristics shared by ecosystems in radically different environments\, among different species\, and across time. By highlighting patterns in the architecture of how humans and other species interact\, Dunne suggests new ways to understand the sustainability of ecosystems  past\, present\, and future. She also proposes potential lessons for modern humans in fostering a more sustainable future\, using examples from preindustrial hunter-gatherer and agricultural societies. Dunne is vice president for Science at the Santa Fe Institute. \n[$8 – $10] \nMore info and tickets: http://www.dmns.org/learn/adults/after-hours/the-web-of-life-humans-amid-complex-ecological-networks/

SUMMARY:Indigenous Film and Arts Festival
DESCRIPTION:The Denver Museum of Nature and Science in partnership with the International Institute for Indigenous Resource Management (IIIRM) presents the Indigenous Film and Arts Festival. Join DMNS for the opening night of the festival for a screening of Message from Mungo. A dessert & coffee reception will follow the film.\n\n\nMessage from Mungo (directors Andrew Pike and Ann McGrath). In 1969\, erosion around Lake Mungo in New South Wales\, Australia revealed the cremated remains of Mungo Woman – to western scientists\, the earliest known cremation in the world; to the Aboriginal peoples of the area\, their ancestor. The story is told through interviews with archeologists\, local pastoralists\, government parks and heritage officers\, and members of the three traditional Aboriginal groups of the Mungo region (Mutthi Mutthi\, Ngiampaa\, and Barkindji/Paakintji). The Aboriginal communities are keen to have the film widely seen\, as it affirms the importance of their heritage and history\, and records their difficult struggle to gain a meaningful role in managing their heritage. (Ronin Films\, 2014\, 70 min.). \nChip Colwell\, Senior Curator of Anthropology\, will lead a post-screening discussion with the audience. \n[Free] \nMore info: http://www.dmns.org/learn/adults/after-hours/indigenous-film-festival/

SUMMARY:NASA's Viking Project
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate the 40th anniversary of NASA’s Viking Missions\, marking the first successful landings on the surface of Mars. Two identical spacecraft (Viking 1 and Viking 2)\, each consisting of a nuclear-powered lander and a solar-powered orbiter\, were built. Each orbiter-lander was launched together and entered the Mars orbit in mid-1976; the landers then separated and descended to the planet’s surface. Both orbiters and landers returned a treasure trove of observations for several years. The missions had strong ties to our community—Viking Lander 1 and 2 were built in Denver at Martin Marietta’s Waterton Canyon facility. \nThis panel of engineers and scientists who worked on the Viking missions will share the challenges and triumphs\, and how the findings have continued to shape our understanding of the Red Planet: \n\nGuy Beutelschies participated in spacecraft engineering teams for numerous planetary exploration missions and serves as director of space exploration systems at Lockheed Martin Space Systems.\nDr. Ben Clark\, from the Space Science Institute\, developed the X-ray Fluorescence Spectrometer soil chemistry analyzers for the Viking Lander missions and served as Lockheed Martin’s chief scientist of space exploration systems.\nDr. Bruce Jakosky\, of LASP at the University of Colorado\, participated in the Mars Atmospheric Water Detector experiment on the Viking Orbiter missions and serves as the principal investigator of the MAVEN mission currently operating at Mars.\n\nTickets: $12 – $15 \nMore info and tickets: http://www.dmns.org/learn/adults/after-hours/nasas-viking-project/

Becoming a dog musher was Harry Okpik’s childhood dream\, but during the Dog Slaughter in the 1960s\, when government agents shot thousands of Inuit huskies across the Canadian Arctic\, 11-year-old Harry thought his dream was forever destroyed. Twelve years later\, after traumatic residential schooling\, another personal tragedy struck when he suffered a shooting accident and the eventual loss of his leg. In this powerful documentary\, filmed over the course of several seasons\, Harry recounts the momentous events of his life\, including the realization of his life-long dream of running a dog sled team in the 600-km Ivakkak race\, and the challenge of passing on his knowledge to a younger generation. In Inuktitut and English. (Catbird Productions\, 2015\, 72 min.). \nA discussion will follow the film. \nMore info: http://www.dmns.org/learn/adults/indigenous-film/ \n2016 Schedule \nJune 8 – Youth Showcase\nJuly 13 – Empire of Dirt\nAugust 10 – Film TBA\nSeptember 14 – Two Spirits Showcase\nOctober 9 – Message from Mungo\nNovember 9  – Rising Voices/Hótȟaŋiŋpi\nThere is no film in December
