SUMMARY:A Selection of Masterpieces: Art from the Denver Art Museum’s Western American Art Collection
DESCRIPTION:How do museums determine what is worthy of collecting and saving for posterity? Many of the paintings\, artifacts\, and ephemera found in the collections of our nation’s museums rarely see the light of day. From these vast collections\, how do curators determine which works to put on display for the public? Join Jennifer R. Henneman\, assistant curator for the Petrie Institute of Western American Art at the Denver Art Museum\, as she delves into stories related to paintings and sculpture from Backstory: Western American Art in Context. Discover more about the provenance of these works as well as the forethought that went into choosing them for this exhibition. \n[$4 – $5] \nMore info: http://www.historycolorado.org/event/selection-masterpieces-art-denver-art-museum-s-western-american-art-collection

SUMMARY:The Evolving Urban Fabric of Denver’s River North District
DESCRIPTION:History Colorado hosts graduate students from the University of Colorado Denver’s College of Architecture and Planning as they reveal how the urban fabric of Denver’s booming River North (RiNo) district has evolved from its 19th century industrial roots to a 21st century mixed-use arts district. SUMMARY:Tiny Library Concert: Jake Schepps and Round Window
DESCRIPTION:Colorado’s banjo renaissance man\, Jake Schepps\, has made a name for himself as an adroit instrumentalist with an intrepid\, imaginative vision for contemporary string-band music. His nimble touch and deep sensitivity to the five-string banjo’s idiomatic qualities are rooted in traditional and progressive bluegrass styles\, yet his insatiable curiosity and open spirit have brought him to an exciting frontier of new acoustic music. \nThis special Tiny Library Concert features Jake Schepps with his latest project\, Round Window. Schepps has gathered an intrepid group of musicians to play a brand new score composed by Schepps live to Buster Keaton’s classic silent comedy film\, “The Scarecrow.” In addition\, get ready for Brazilian choro\, bluegrass\, and classical music from string-band Round Window\, featuring Bill Kopper (7-string guitar)\, Enion Pelta-Tiller (violin)\, Eric Thorin (double bass)\, Carl Dixon (percussion)\, and Schepps (banjo). \nHistory Colorado’s Tiny Library Concert series is generously supported by Airshow Mastering and features performances by local Colorado musicians in the unusual and intimate space of the museum’s Stephen H. Hart Library & Research Center. Beer\, wine\, and cocktails available for purchase. \n[Members $9\, non-members $12] \nMore info and tickets: http://www.historycolorado.org/event/tiny-library-concert-featuring-jake-schepps-and-round-window

SUMMARY:Northwest Denver: Altruism to Amusement
DESCRIPTION:For most of its history\, thanks to its geography\, northwest Denver has felt like a world apart from the rest of the city. Separated by railroad tracks and the South Platte River\, and with much of its land elevated above downtown Denver\, the northwest side attracted those who wanted to leave behind the dirt and sin of the early city. Successive waves of immigrants endowed the area with their own cultural traditions. Northwest Denver has also been a pleasure ground\, home to Elitch Gardens\, Lakeside\, and Manhattan Beach amusement parks\, beautiful lakes\, and other amenities. Join local author Mark Barnhouse as he discusses his book\, Northwest Denver\, and highlights how this area has evolved along with its recent renewal in popularity as newcomers and longtime Denverites rediscover its charms. \n[$4 – $5] \nMore info and tickets: http://www.historycolorado.org/event/northwest-denver-altruism-amusement

SUMMARY:Tiny Library Concert: Gabrielle Louise with Jacob Russo
DESCRIPTION:Gabrielle Louise (www.gabriellelouise.com) is a nationally touring troubadour noted for her poignant lyrics and lush voice. Her music is anchored deeply in folk and Americana\, with the earthy feel of early Joni Mitchell and the spirited delivery of fellow genre-hopping artist Eva Cassidy. Gabrielle is at one moment folkie and ethereal\, the next a smoky jazz chanteuse. Known for her authenticity and candor on stage\, her performances are notably present and sincere\, a professional presentation of her private creative world. Gabrielle Louise has shared the stage with greats such as Richie Havens\, Tom Paxton\, Patty Larkin\, Eliza Gilkyson\, and Guy Clark. Her third album\, “If the Static Clears\,” was released in September 2016. \nJacob Russo (www.sonicbids.com/band/jacobrusso) hails from the acoustic corn fields of western Colorado. Although he now calls the Front Range home\, musical explorations have taken him far and wide\, helping craft his unique blend of rustic indie-folk. Jacob’s live performances are tinged with a sort of hopeless honesty found only in the most genuine of folk musicians. He has shared the bill with folk artists such as Gregory Alan Isakov\, SHEL and Caleb Hawley and is a fixture at the Rocky Mountain Folk Festival. \nHistory Colorado’s Tiny Library Concert series features performances by local Colorado musicians in the unusual and intimate setting of the museum’s Stephen H. Hart Library and Research Center. Beer\, wine\, and cocktails will be available for purchase. \n[$9 – $12] \nMore info and tickets: http://www.historycolorado.org/event/tiny-library-concert-featuring-gabrielle-louise-jacob-russo

SUMMARY:Tiny Library Concert: The Still Tide
DESCRIPTION:History Colorado welcomes in the new year with the luminous sound of The Still Tide to the Tiny Library Concert stage in January! \nHaving left behind New York City’s jagged cityscape for the mountains of Denver’s skyline\, indie rock trio The Still Tide has at last found a place to call home. Featuring the spacious songwriting and tender guitar work of front-woman Anna Morsett (Ark Life\, These United States)\, their latest EP “Half Empty Rooms” refracts the grit and urgency of city life through the lens of Colorado’s clean air and open space\, creating “… a little sweet spot where indie rock\, shoe-gaze and folk rock all intersect” (Blurt Online). \nHistory Colorado’s Tiny Library Concert series features performances by local Colorado musicians in the unusual and intimate setting of the museum’s Stephen H. SUMMARY:Tiny Library Concert: Natalie Tate and Pineross
DESCRIPTION:History Colorado presents a Tiny Library Concert double-header in December\, featuring Natalie Tate and Pineross! \nNatalie Tate (natalietatemusic.com) was the 2016 winner of the Denver Westword’s Best Singer-Songwriter award. A long-time fixture in Denver’s indie rock scene\, Tate makes ethereal\, roots-based indie pop blended with the sweet simplicity of her voice. Her latest beat-driven EP\, “Your Type\,” takes us to a hearts-vibrating\, lights-swirling\, eyes-closed dance-floor where we are brought back into the forgotten spaces inside of ourselves. Tate has performed nationally\, sharing stages with Ark Life\, Gregory Alan Isakov\, Futurebirds\, The Cave Singers and more. Her rotating cast of collaborators includes members of some of Denver’s best indie bands\, including The Still Tide\, Inner Oceans\, and Chimney Choir. \nPineross is the side project of Kevin Larkin\, multi-instrumentalist from Denver’s lauded Chimney Choir. As Pineross\, Larkin plays progressive Americana\, channeling the musical ghosts of “old\, weird America” into his hypnotic lyrics\, and the result is an addictive combination of traditional music of the American West\, Irish fiddle tunes\, and Spanish-influenced rhythms. The music of Pineross “re-casts an American past… fluently\, with eyes as encompassing as Walt Whitman’s.” (Independent Clauses) \nHistory Colorado’s Tiny Library Concert series features performances by local Colorado musicians in the unusual and intimate space of the museum’s Stephen H. Hart Library & Research Center.
