SUMMARY:Out of the Past: Fate\, Philosophy and American Film Noir
DESCRIPTION:Join History Colorado for a screening of the classic film noir masterpiece\, Out of the Past (1947)\, followed by a lecture by renowned philosopher\, Robert Pippin. \nProf. Robert Pippin (Evelyn Stefansson Nef Distinguished Service Professor of Social Thought and Philosophy at the University of Chicago) has authored or edited nearly two dozen books\, including Hollywood Westerns and American Mythand Fatalism in American Film Noir. \nJacques Tourneur’s gripping 1947 film\, Out of the Past (starring Robert Mitchum\, Jane Greer\, and Kirk Douglas) is considered by many film historians to be the paradigmatic example of film noir on account of its dark cinematography\, serpentine plot and classic femme fatale. The Library of Congress added the film to the United States National Film Registry in 1991 on account of its being deemed “culturally\, historically\, or aesthetically significant. \n5:30 PM: Screening of Out of The Past \n7:30 PM: Professor Robert Pippin’s Film as Philosophy: Agency and Fate in Out of the Past \nTickets: FREE! SUMMARY:The Story of Colorado's State Symbols
DESCRIPTION:As Coloradans\, we should all know state symbols that describe our lovely home\, like the white and lavender columbine or the blue spruce. But did you know that Colorado actually has more than thirty official state symbols? These include our brilliant state gemstone—the aquamarine—and the dazzling rhodochrosite\, our state mineral. Why do states promote symbols? Do they matter? State historian Dr. William Convery uncovers the history behind some of the more obscure state symbols—and makes the case for why we need them. \nTwo Lectures: 1p – 2p and 7p – 8p \nTickets: History Colorado members: $8.50\, $6.50 with student ID; $10 for nonmembers \nMore info: http://www.historycolorado.org/event/story-colorado’s-state-symbols-0

SUMMARY:WWII from Coloradans Who Lived It
DESCRIPTION:What more fitting way to observe Memorial Day than by listening to the recollections of those who have defended our country during a time of need\, World War II. \nFrom the History Colorado Website: In Sterling Heroes of World War II – As It Was Lived\, In Their Own Words\, 36 veterans from northeast Colorado share wartime experiences that today pre-date nine in 10 living Americans. With the 70th anniversary of victory over Germany and Japan upon us\, their stories remind all what it took to defeat global tyranny. Dr. John Elliff and Denny Dressman collaborated on this microcosm of hometown heroes who served in all branches of the military and in all theaters of action. They’ll discuss the sometimes poignant\, sometimes harrowing\, sometimes humorous – but always readable – individual recollections of that pivotal time: As It Was Lived\, In Their Own Words. As Dressman wrote in the book’s ending note: “…Thanks to the Sterling Heroes for sharing\, and to Dr. Elliff for asking them to.” \nTickets: Members $4\, nonmembers $5. Buy online or by calling 303-866-2394.
