SUMMARY:Welcome to the Dahl House: Matilda
DESCRIPTION:USA\, 1996\, 102 Minute Running Time \nSaturday\, June 11th.\n$5 all guests. 6 and under are FREE.\nAdmission includes FREE Cereal Bar!\nCereal bar begins at 10am\, film begins at 10:30am \nBased on the book Matilda\, by British children’s author Roald Dahl\, this film moves the setting from the U.K. to the U.S.; otherwise it follows the original closely. Matilda Wormwood (Mara Wilson) is an extremely curious and intelligent little girl who is very different from her low-brow\, mainstream parents (Danny DeVito and real-life wife Rhea Perlman)\, who quite cruelly ignore her. As she grows older\, she begins to discover that she has telekinetic powers. Not until a teacher shows her kindness for the first time does she realize that she can use those powers to do something about her sufferings and help her friends as well. Villains from the awful Miss Trunchbull (Pam Ferris)\, headmistress of her miserable school Crunchem Hall\, to her parents and older brother begin to feel her ire. Look for Paul Reubens (aka Pee Wee Herman) in a small part as an FBI agent investigating Matilda’s shady father. \nMore info and tickets: http://www.denverfilm.org/filmcenter/detail.aspx?id=28422

SUMMARY:Tattered Cover Film Series: Sweetie
DESCRIPTION:Join the Tattered Cover Book Store\, UCD’s College of Arts & Media\, KUNC 91.5\, and the Sie FilmCenter (in the Lowenstein CulturePlex\, next door to the Tattered Cover Colfax Avenue) for an exploration of the world of classic movies\, hosted by film critic Howie Movshovitz. All programs begin at 1:00 pm. \nTickets: $1.00\, and are available one hour before the screening from the box office. \nParking is available in the parking lot off of Elizabeth or Columbine Streets. \nAbout the Film: When Sweetie—Jane Campion’s first feature—screened at Cannes\, roughly 2000 film critics were simultaneously outraged\, perplexed\, disgusted\, disturbed and fascinated. It’s the story of two sisters\, one thin\, trim\, unsmiling and disciplined—actually repressed—and the other heavy and nearly feral. In their opposite ways\, both act out in an explosion of color and behavior. SUMMARY:Welcome to the Dahl House: Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory
DESCRIPTION:USA\, 1971\, 100 Minute Running Time \nSaturday\, June 4th.\n$5 all guests. 6 and under are FREE.\nAdmission includes FREE Cereal Bar!\nCereal bar begins at 10am\, film begins at 10:30am \nEnigmatic candy manufacturer Willy Wonka (Gene Wilder) stages a contest by hiding five golden tickets in five of his scrumptious candy bars. Whoever comes up with these tickets will win a free tour of the Wonka factory\, as well as a lifetime supply of candy. Four of the five winning children are insufferable brats: the fifth is a likeable young lad named Charlie Bucket (Peter Ostrum)\, who takes the tour in the company of his equally amiable grandfather (Jack Albertson). In the course of the tour\, Willy Wonka punishes the four nastier children in various diabolical methods — one kid is inflated and covered with blueberry dye\, another ends up as a principal ingredient of the chocolate\, and so on — because these kids have violated the ethics of Wonka’s factory. In the end\, only Charlie and his grandfather are left. \nMore info and tickets: http://www.denverfilm.org/filmcenter/detail.aspx?id=28421

SUMMARY:film/Still: Peggy Guggenheim: Art Addict
DESCRIPTION:In honor of Women of Abstract Expressionism\, the next edition of the Clyfford Still Museum’s ongoing collaboration with the Denver Film Society offers a fascinating look at one of abstract expressionism’s most galvanizing figures. Peggy Guggenheim: Art Addict\, a feature documentary based on Peggy Guggenheim’s sole authorized biography\, explores the life of a 20th-century art icon. Ahead of her time and an heiress to her family fortune\, Guggenheim became a central figure in the modern art movement. Her colorful personal history included trysts\, affairs\, and marriages with such figures as Samuel Beckett\, Max Ernst\, Jackson Pollock\, and Marcel Duchamp. While fighting through personal tragedy\, she maintained her vision to build one of the most important collections of modern art\, which today is enshrined in her famous Venetian palazzo. \nPURCHASE TICKETS \nSie FilmCenter\n$11 public; $7 Clyfford Still Museum and Denver Film Society Members

SUMMARY:Tattered Cover Film Series: Merry Christmas\, Mr. Lawrence
Tickets are $1.00\, and are available one hour before the screening from the box office. Parking is available in the parking lot off of Elizabeth or Columbine Streets. \nAbout the Film: Not a film for celebrating the Christmas holidays\, Merry Christmas\, Mr. Lawrence takes place during World War II in a Japanese prison camp for allied soldiers. It centers on the obsessive hatred/friendship/attraction between the Japanese commander (Ryuichi Sakamoto) and a British officer (David Bowie). It’s a more brutal and disturbing movie than The Bridge on the River Kwai\, which seems tame by comparison. SUMMARY:Opera: La Damnation De Faust
DESCRIPTION:One Show Only! Saturday\, April 30th at 1pm. \nTickets: $15 – $18 \nMore info: http://www.denverfilm.org/filmcenter/reserve.aspx?fid=84&id=41854\nLA DAMNATION DE FAUST by BERLIOZ\nOpéra National de Paris\nRecorded 2015 | Approximately 140 minutes \nStarring: Jonas Kaufmann\, Sophie Koch\, Bryn Terfel\nConductor: Philippe Jordan\nDirector: Alvis Hermanis \n“This marvelous book fascinated me from the very beginning. I could not put it down. I read it incessantly\, during meals\, in the theatre\, in the street\, everywhere.” And so it was\, following the composer’s discovery of Faust Part One in 1828 that Goethe joined Virgil and Shakespeare to form Berlioz’s trinity. \nWithout taking the time to catch his breath\, he set the verse passages of Gerard de Nerval’s translation to music and published them under the title Huit scènes de Faust. Eighteen years later\, during his travels “in Austria\, Hungary\, Bohemia and Silesia” he decided to revise and develop the material into La Damnation de Faust\, whereupon the same feverish urge took hold of him: “Once underway\, I wrote the missing verses as the musical ideas came to me. I composed the score when and where I could – in the carriage\, on the train\, on steam boats”. \nAs if swept away by “the longing of too vast a heart and a soul thirsting for elusive happiness”\, Berlioz became one with his creation. The voice that invokes “immense\, impenetrable and proud nature” is entirely his own\, its extraordinary breadth transcending traditional forms to become a symphonic and operatic dream. Bringing out the dramatic force of this légende dramatique is a constant challenge that stage director Alvis Hermanis has willingly accepted. Philippe Jordan conducts the first installment of a Berlioz cycle which is to continue over several seasons. It also marks the return of Jonas Kaufmann and Bryn Terfel to the Paris Opera. \nPrincipal Cast: Jonas Kaufmann\, Sophie Koch\, Bryn Terfel

SUMMARY:Tattered Cover Film Series: La Strada
DESCRIPTION:Join the Tattered Cover Book Store\, UCD’s College of Arts & Media\, KUNC 91.5\, and the Sie FilmCenter (in the Lowenstein CulturePlex\, next door to the Tattered Cover Colfax Avenue) for an exploration of the world of classic movies\, hosted by film critic Howie Movshovitz. Parking is available in the parking lot off of Elizabeth or Columbine Streets. \nAbout the Film: Now\, many think of Fellini as the maker of La Dolce Vita and 81⁄2\, but he began his filmmaking as a neo-realist\, grounding his films in the life of real streets\, poverty and desperation. La Strada\, one of the world’s greatest films\, is about Zampano (Anthony Quinn)\, an abusive strongman in minor one-ring circuses\, and Gelsomina (Giuletta Massina) the frail\, waif of a woman he buys for his assistant. It’s a magnificent film\, but things do not go well. (108 minutes) \nSee all the films in this series: http://www.tatteredcover.com/sites/tatteredcover.com/files/cinema%20flyer_2.pdf

SUMMARY:The Last Man on the Moon + Q&A with Former Astronaut Bruce McCandless
DESCRIPTION:Join special guest former astronaut Bruce McCandless for a post-screening Q&A on Saturday\, February 27th at 7pm. Bruce was a member of the Apollo program and flew 2 shuttle mission\, including one that launched the Hubble Space Telescope and made the world’s first untethered “space walks” using the Manned Maneuvering Unit\, which he helped design. In 2005 he was inducted into the Astronaut Hall of Fame. \nAbout “The Last Man on the Moon:” When Apollo astronaut Eugene Cernan stepped off the moon in 1972 he left his footprints and his daughter’s initials in the lunar dust. Only now\, over forty years later\, is he ready to share his epic but deeply personal story. Cernan’s burning ambition carried him to the spectacular and hazardous environment of space and to the moon. But there was a heavy price to pay for the fame and privilege that followed. As his wife famously remarked\, “If you think going to the moon is hard\, try staying at home.” The Last Man on the Moon combines rare archive material\, compelling Visual FX and unprecedented access to present an iconic historical character on the big screen. \nMore info and tickets: http://www.denverfilm.org/filmcenter/detail.aspx?id=28156

SUMMARY:Women + Film: The Armor Of Light
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, February 24th at 7pm. Post-reception in Henderson’s Lounge. Director Abigail Disney will Skype in for a post-film Q&A! \nWhat price conscience? Abigail Disney’s directorial debut\, The Armor of light\, follows the journey of an Evangelical minister trying to find the courage to preach about the growing toll of gun violence in America. The film tracks Reverend Rob Schenck\, anti-abortion activist and fixture on the political far right\, who breaks with orthodoxy by questioning whether being pro-gun is consistent with being pro-life. Reverend Schenck is shocked and perplexed by the reactions of his long-time friends and colleagues who warn him away from this complex\, politically explosive issue. \nAlong the way\, Rev. Schenck meets Lucy McBath\, the mother of Jordan Davis\, an unarmed teenager who was murdered in Florida and whose story has cast a spotlight on “Stand Your Ground” laws. McBath\, also a Christian\, decides to work with Schenck even though she is pro-choice. Lucy is on a difficult journey of her own\, trying to make sense of her devastating loss while using her grief to effect some kind of viable and effective political action—where so many before her have failed. \nMore info and tickets: http://www.denverfilm.org/filmcenter/detail.aspx?id=28178
