SUMMARY:Tattered Cover Film Series: La Strada
DESCRIPTION:Join the Tattered Cover Book Store\, UCD’s College of Arts & Media\, KUNC 91.5\, and the Sie FilmCenter (in the Lowenstein CulturePlex\, next door to the Tattered Cover Colfax Avenue) for an exploration of the world of classic movies\, hosted by film critic Howie Movshovitz. All programs begin at 1:00 pm. Tickets are $1.00\, and are available one hour before the screening from the box office. Parking is available in the parking lot off of Elizabeth or Columbine Streets. \nAbout the Film: Now\, many think of Fellini as the maker of La Dolce Vita and 81⁄2\, but he began his filmmaking as a neo-realist\, grounding his films in the life of real streets\, poverty and desperation. La Strada\, one of the world’s greatest films\, is about Zampano (Anthony Quinn)\, an abusive strongman in minor one-ring circuses\, and Gelsomina (Giuletta Massina) the frail\, waif of a woman he buys for his assistant. It’s a magnificent film\, but things do not go well. (108 minutes) \nSee all the films in this series: http://www.tatteredcover.com/sites/tatteredcover.com/files/cinema%20flyer_2.pdf

SUMMARY:The Last Man on the Moon + Q&A with Former Astronaut Bruce McCandless
DESCRIPTION:Join special guest former astronaut Bruce McCandless for a post-screening Q&A on Saturday\, February 27th at 7pm. Bruce was a member of the Apollo program and flew 2 shuttle mission\, including one that launched the Hubble Space Telescope and made the world’s first untethered “space walks” using the Manned Maneuvering Unit\, which he helped design. In 2005 he was inducted into the Astronaut Hall of Fame. \nAbout “The Last Man on the Moon:” When Apollo astronaut Eugene Cernan stepped off the moon in 1972 he left his footprints and his daughter’s initials in the lunar dust. Only now\, over forty years later\, is he ready to share his epic but deeply personal story. Cernan’s burning ambition carried him to the spectacular and hazardous environment of space and to the moon. But there was a heavy price to pay for the fame and privilege that followed. As his wife famously remarked\, “If you think going to the moon is hard\, try staying at home.” The Last Man on the Moon combines rare archive material\, compelling Visual FX and unprecedented access to present an iconic historical character on the big screen. \nMore info and tickets: http://www.denverfilm.org/filmcenter/detail.aspx?id=28156

SUMMARY:Women + Film: The Armor Of Light
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, February 24th at 7pm. Post-reception in Henderson’s Lounge. Director Abigail Disney will Skype in for a post-film Q&A! \nWhat price conscience? Abigail Disney’s directorial debut\, The Armor of light\, follows the journey of an Evangelical minister trying to find the courage to preach about the growing toll of gun violence in America. The film tracks Reverend Rob Schenck\, anti-abortion activist and fixture on the political far right\, who breaks with orthodoxy by questioning whether being pro-gun is consistent with being pro-life. Reverend Schenck is shocked and perplexed by the reactions of his long-time friends and colleagues who warn him away from this complex\, politically explosive issue. \nAlong the way\, Rev. Schenck meets Lucy McBath\, the mother of Jordan Davis\, an unarmed teenager who was murdered in Florida and whose story has cast a spotlight on “Stand Your Ground” laws. McBath\, also a Christian\, decides to work with Schenck even though she is pro-choice. Lucy is on a difficult journey of her own\, trying to make sense of her devastating loss while using her grief to effect some kind of viable and effective political action—where so many before her have failed. \nMore info and tickets: http://www.denverfilm.org/filmcenter/detail.aspx?id=28178

SUMMARY:J'adore Ciné Club: Grand Central
DESCRIPTION:Learning French or just love French culture? Then the J’Adore Ciné Club series is for you. There’s no formal membership required\, just buy your ticket to the movie and come! \nAbout the Film: A nuclear power plant serves as the setting for a forbidden romance as volatile as the facility itself in the intense\, brilliantly acted second feature from Rebecca Zlotowski (Belle Epine). Gary is a poor\, unskilled laborer looking for easy money and a place to fit in. Karole (Léa Seydoux) is the fiancée of longtime plant employee Toni\, one of the many underpaid men and women who daily brave illness and possible death from radiation poisoning. Soon Gary and Karole fall rapturously in love\, and their moonlit trysts in the bucolic surrounding countryside pose a growing threat to the staff’s tight-knit bonds. Zlotowski focuses both on the everyday routines of the workers and on the swooning passions of the love triangle at the film’s heart\, with electronica pulsating on the soundtrack as her characters gamble ever more perilously in work and love. \nFrance\, 2014\, 95 Minute Running Time \nMore info and tickets: http://www.denverfilm.org/filmcenter/detail.aspx?id=28138

\nAbout the Film: Three stories—all involve music and people—unspool in Memphis. It’s eccentric\, like all good Jim Jarmusch films\, and unexpected elements come together\, as in all good Jim Jarmusch films. This one also has the strange and haunting Screamin’ Jay Hawkins somehow at the center of things— along with the unseen Elvis Presley\, of course. Shot with rich unease by the great Robby Müller. SUMMARY:Rare Exports - A Christmas Tale
DESCRIPTION:One Night Only! Saturday\, December 12th at 10pm. \nIt’s the eve of Christmas in northern Finland\, and an “archeological” dig has just unearthed the real Santa Claus. But this particular Santa isn’t the one you want coming to town! When the local children begin mysteriously disappearing\, young Pietari (Onni Tommila) and his father Rauno (Jorma Tommila)\, a reindeer hunter by trade\, capture the mythological being and attempt to sell Santa to the misguided leader of the multinational corporation sponsoring the dig. Santa’s elves\, however\, will stop at nothing to free their fearless leader from captivity. What ensues is a wildly humorous nightmare—a fantastically bizarre polemic on modern day morality. Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale is a re-imagining of the most classic of all childhood fantasies\, and is a darkly comic gem soon to be required perennial holiday viewing. Written and directed by Jalmari Helander\, who expands on his hit short films “Rare Exports\, Inc.” and “Rare Exports\, Inc.—Safety Instructions.” \nFinland\, 2010\, 84 Minute Running Time\nGenre/Subjects: Action/Adventure\, Black Comedy\, Fantasy\, Horror\nLanguage: Finnish\, English English Sub-Titles \nMore info and tickets: http://www.denverfilm.org/filmcenter/detail.aspx?id=23785&FID=86
