Beer Pots and Beadwork: Exploring South Sotho Arts from Southern Africa

April 21, 2016 @ 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm

Art is an expression of ourselves and the world in which we live, and the study of visual art allows us to gain nuanced understandings of the many cultures within our global society. This notion serves as the point of departure for Colorado State University art historian David Riep, who will discuss his field research among South Sotho populations in South Africa and Lesotho, which took place between 2007 and 2011.

From beer pots to beadwork, Riep will discuss the unique formal aspects of South Sotho visual arts, and highlight how unique form, pattern, and color are used to promote identity and cultural affiliation. In addition, Riep will share his experiences working with South Sotho artists, oral historians, kings, chiefs, and religious practitioners in order to locate local perspectives on their art and history, and to understand how the visual arts function in South Sotho society.

Check-in at North Building, lower level.

Tickets are $5 for Friends of Native Arts members, $10 for DAM members, $12 others, free for students with ID.
