Things to Do in Denver: History Buffs

December 3, 2017

Have history buffs in your group? Try these ideas:

  • Explore Colorado History with hands-on exhibits that invite visitors to drive a model T car, learn the basics of ski jumping, don a Bronco barrel (you remember the famous barrel man, right?) and SO MUCH MORE. History Colorado is a lot of fun, while also being educational.
  • Go on your own history walking tour with the help of the free, phone-based history tour Denver Story Trek.
  • Dig into your family’s past or your house’s past with help from friendly research librarians at Denver Public Library’s Western History and Genealogy department located on the 5th floor of the central branch. Even without a project in mind, there’s a lot of great browsing to be found here!
  • Travel back to simpler times at Four Mile Historic Park and pan for gold, tour the one-room school house and imagine life in the 1800s.
  • Take a free tour of the capitol building Monday – Friday, 10a – 3p, excluding holidays. While it is possible to visit the building without a tour, you can only go up inside the dome with a tour guide.
  • Open every day since August 12, 1892, the Brown Palace is rich with Denver history and they even offer public tours to show off that history.
  • Visit one of Denver’s historic mansion museums like Molly Brown House or the Byers-Evans House to see how the wealthy lived more than 100 years ago.
  • Climb to the top of the iconic D & F Tower on 16th Street Mall on one of Historic Denver’s holiday tours (the tower is otherwise closed to the public).
  • Explore the fascinating lives of African Americans who helped settle and develop the west at the Black American West Museum.
  • Learn about the many contributions of African Americans to Colorado and Denver history at two free exhibitions housed on the 2nd floor of the Blair-Caldwell library.
  • Dive into the history of currency at the free Money Museum at the Federal Reserve and take home a free bag of (shredded) money as a souvenir!

A Christmas Carol

Is it going too far to say my year wouldn’t feel complete without seeing “A Christmas Carol” at the Denver Center? I don’t think so. Our family looks forward to this production each year, and every year, I find new meaning in this classic tale. Poignant, thought-provoking and joyous, the Denver Cente  Continue Reading
